Chapter 4

"Come to my place first! My kid's in eighth grade and we're desperate!"

I kept my composure, spoke briefly with each parent, noted their needs, and jotted down contact information.

In just two hours, I'd booked five clients.

Two seniors cramming for finals, one junior doing prep work, and two eighth-graders looking to level up.

The hourly rate the parents offered on their own was a number that quietly stunned me.

I didn't negotiate. I just wrote down the schedules and requirements.

Tutoring started that same afternoon.

The first student was a senior boy from a well-off family whose math was in critical condition.

I pulled out the problem-solving framework I'd already mapped out, skipped the small talk, and went straight for the weak points.

His mother sat in the living room the entire time, watching nervously through the glass door.

Two hours later, the boy scratched his head. "I think something actually clicked?"

His mother rushed in, saw the clear step-by-step work laid out on the scratch paper, and her eyes went red.

Then the second family. The third.

By the time I finished the last session and checked my phone, it was eleven-thirty at night.

My throat was dry and raw, but my mind was sharp.

At the front gate of the neighborhood, I stood under a streetlight, opened the old wallet in my backpack, and counted every bill and cash gift I'd received that day.

A thick stack.

Exactly one thousand dollars.

I'd barely stepped outside the gate when my phone buzzed in my pocket.

The screen lit up with over a dozen missed calls, all from Mom.

Plus a few unread texts.

I opened them.

The most recent, sent half an hour ago: "Where the hell did you run off to? Pick up the phone!"

I scrolled up. A few photos.

Mom and Adrian posing together at the airport, both grinning wide.

Adrian holding up his boarding pass, a check-in counter behind him.

Above that, a message: "Taking your brother to Miami for a few days. His graduation present."

"Focus on work and pay me back. Don't slack off."

The tone was matter-of-fact. No questions, no concern. Just orders.

I stared at those photos.

In them, Mom had her arm around Adrian's shoulders. He wore a brand-new designer tee and sunglasses, looking like he owned the world.

I put my phone away and didn't reply.

The days that followed blurred together as I moved from one student's home to the next, explaining problems, drilling concepts.

The weight fell off me fast, several pounds gone before I noticed.

Meanwhile, Mom and Adrian's social media updated daily with their beautiful Miami life.

Crystal-blue ocean, white sand beaches, all-you-can-eat buffets at a luxury resort.

Adrian's caption: "Graduation trip. Perfection!"

"Thanks Mom, love you!!"

Mom's comment underneath: "As long as my boy's happy!"

Followed by a parade of heart and sunshine emojis.

Every time I refreshed the feed, it was like a thin needle pressing into a heart that had already gone numb.

Then the day Mom came home.

I had just been to the bank, depositing the last sum into a card nobody knew about but me.

The numbers flickered on the screen and held.

Forty-eight thousand, four hundred dollars.

Not a cent more, not a cent less. The exact figure from that ledger.

I placed the original ledger and a photocopy of the deposit receipt together into an envelope.

Then I went to school.

It was a critical day for college admissions confirmations. The campus was packed with anxious students and parents, the air tight with tension and anticipation.

In a corner of the hallway outside the admissions office, I spotted them.

Mom was gripping Adrian's arm, her face strained as she stood in front of the bulletin board, scanning the dense rows of acceptance listings.

The cocky glow Adrian had worn on vacation was gone. His face was pale and uneasy.
