Chapter 3

Grayson noticed the insurance folder on Wednesday morning.

I was brushing my teeth when I heard him stop moving in the bedroom. The particular quality of silence that means someone has found something they weren't looking for.

I rinsed my mouth. Walked back into the room. He was sitting on the edge of the bed, the folder open in his lap.

"When did you do this?" he asked.

I pulled a sweater from the closet. "Last week. Victor Huang did the appraisal."

"Victor Huang." He said the name slowly. Testing it. "The guy from the design event?"

"He specializes in estate jewelry."

Grayson stared at the appraisal document. I watched his eyes move across the numbers. One million. Two hundred thousand. His thumb rubbed the edge of the paper.

"Jesus," he said quietly.

"My grandmother wore it at her wedding," I said. "I thought I should protect it properly."

He looked up at me. His face had that expression he got when he was recalculating something. When a number had changed and he was adjusting the formula.

"You're keeping it here?" he said. "In the house?"

"Where else would I keep it?"

"A safety deposit box. A vault. Esme, if someone broke in—"

"No one's breaking in," I said. I pulled the sweater over my head. "It's fine."

He set the folder back on the nightstand. Carefully. Like it might break.

"We should talk about this," he said.

"About what?"

"About—" He gestured at the folder. "About having this much value just sitting in a jewelry box."

"It's insured."

"That's not the point."

I picked up my bag. "I'm going to be late for the supplier meeting."

"Esme—"

"We can talk later," I said.

I left him sitting there. Walked downstairs. Got in my car.

In the rearview mirror, I could see him standing at the bedroom window. Watching me leave.

I drove to the factory and didn't think about him once.

***

Jaliyah started appearing three days later.

First it was the break room. I was refilling my coffee when she walked in, glanced at me, smiled. "Morning, Esme."

"Morning."

Her eyes dropped to my wrists. Lingered. Moved away.

Then it was the hallway outside my office. She was talking to one of the junior accountants, her back to my door, but I could see her reflection in the glass. She kept turning her head. Just slightly. Just enough.

The third time, she was in the design studio. We didn't have bookkeeping work in the design studio. She was holding a clipboard, standing near the fabric samples, and when I walked past she said, "That's a beautiful necklace."

I wasn't wearing a necklace.

"Thank you," I said.

She smiled. Looked at my hands. My wrists. My throat.

I kept walking.

That night, I moved the bracelet from the jewelry box to a velvet stand on my dresser. Set it where the bedroom door would frame it. Where the evening light would catch the stone just right.

I left the door open when I went downstairs.

***

The recall notice came on a Monday.

Five thousand pairs. Defective adhesive. Soles separating from uppers after minimal wear. Three retailers threatening to pull our entire line.

I was in the conference room when the production manager delivered the news. Grayson sat at the head of the table. His face went white. Then red.

"How did this happen?" he said.

"Third-party supplier," the manager said. "The batch was compromised. We didn't catch it in quality control."

"We didn't catch it," Grayson repeated. He looked at me. "Your team handles quality control."

I met his eyes. Said nothing.

"We need a response plan," I said. "I can have something drafted by end of day."

"I'll handle it," Grayson said.

The Seattle Times called that afternoon. Grayson took the interview in his office. I could hear his voice through the wall. Defensive. Contradictory. Blaming the supplier, then the retailers, then the industry standards.

The article ran the next morning. It made everything worse.

I drafted the crisis plan anyway. Submitted it through the production manager. Grayson rejected it without reading past the first page. Implemented his own approach instead. It cost twice as much and took twice as long.

Rosa found me on the factory floor that evening. The seamstresses had gone home. The machines were quiet.

"Your plan was better," she said.

"It doesn't matter."

"It does." She looked at me for a long moment. "We're routing it through Marcus. He'll implement it under his name. Grayson won't notice."

I started to tell her not to. That it wasn't worth the risk.

But she was already walking away.

***

Grayson started taking calls in his car.

I'd hear the front door close. The engine start. He'd sit in the driveway for an hour. Sometimes longer.

One night I stood at the kitchen window and watched him. His silhouette behind the windshield. His head tilted. His hand moving, gesturing at nothing.

I cracked the window.

His voice drifted up. Low. Urgent.

"...the insurance payout covers everything if we move before the quarter closes."

I closed the window. Went upstairs. Sat at my desk.

I opened my laptop and pulled up the condo listings I'd been reviewing for two weeks. Filtered by building. By floor. By balcony orientation.

I found the unit I needed on page three.

Twelfth floor. Corner unit. Balcony facing east.

Directly above the dumpster enclosure.

I submitted the offer that night. All cash. No inspection. Close in two weeks.

The seller accepted in the morning.

I printed the purchase agreement. Filed it in the folder with the insurance documents. Left the folder on the kitchen counter where Grayson would see it when he came in from his next call.

Then I went upstairs and looked at the bracelet on its stand.

The stone caught the light. Glowed faintly green.

It looked almost real.

I smiled.

Everything was ready.
