Chapter 2

I arrived at the clinic parking garage at eight forty-five, exactly as I did every morning. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting everything in that particular institutional blue that never quite feels like real light. My footsteps echoed against concrete as I walked toward my assigned space in the back corner—the quiet spot I'd specifically requested when I started at the clinic three years ago. I liked the walk. It gave me time to prepare, to shift from the person I was in the world to the doctor I needed to be inside these walls.

The first thing I noticed was the smell. Rubber. Fresh, sharp, and wrong. Then I saw it. All four tires, slashed open like black flowers blooming on the concrete. The car looked wounded, hunkering down on its rims. But it was the driver's door that made me stop.

*BURIED.* One word, carved deep into the paint with something sharp and deliberate. The letters were jagged, uneven, but the message was clear as glass.

I stood there for four seconds. Then I pulled out my phone and began photographing. Every angle. The tires. The word. The garage itself. My hands were steady. They always are now. I checked the timestamp on each image—07:52 AM, 07:53 AM—and made sure the metadata was intact. This was evidence. I knew exactly what it was.

I walked to the security office. The facilities manager, a man named Carl with kind eyes and the perpetual look of someone trying to remember if he'd locked something, was just settling into his chair.

'Morning, Dr. Price,' he said. 'You're early.'

'I need yesterday's parking garage footage,' I said. 'All cameras, 6 PM to 7 AM.'

His eyebrows went up slightly. 'Everything okay?'

'Precaution,' I said. 'I'm documenting something.'

Carl hesitated for maybe three seconds. Then he pulled up the system, downloaded the files, and transferred them to a USB drive without asking further questions. People rarely do, when you speak with the quiet authority of someone who has already decided what happens next.

'You might want to report this,' he said as he handed me the drive.

'I have it handled,' I replied. 'Thank you, Carl.'

I walked back to my car, opened the trunk, and removed the small lockbox I kept there. Inside was a folder—not the one I kept at home, but its traveling companion. I added the USB drive and the photos from my phone, locked it, and placed it back in the trunk. Then I called a rideshare and waited by the entrance, checking my watch. I had forty minutes until my first patient. Plenty of time.

The car arrived. I gave the driver a nod, the kind of professional acknowledgment that requires no words. As we pulled away from the garage, I didn't look back at my wounded car. I didn't need to. I had documented everything. That was what mattered.

I arrived at the clinic at eight fifty-seven. Perfect timing. I greeted Caroline with my usual nod, pulled my first chart, and sat down to review it. My hands were clean. My mind was clear. Nothing had changed.

That evening, as I was reviewing patient notes in my apartment, my personal phone buzzed. Not my work phone—the one only a handful of people had the number for. The screen lit up with an image that made my chest tighten.

It was a photo of a road. Dirt and dust and the particular shade of brown that northern Mexican soil gets in certain light. I knew that road. I had walked it, limping, bleeding, when they first brought me in. When they were still deciding if I would survive the 'processing.'

Another image followed. A border crossing. Then another. A compound with high walls and guard towers. Then a close-up of a man's face—not a face I recognized, but the type was unmistakable. Cartel.

The message that came with them was simple: *I know who you are. I can send you back.*

I sat there in my quiet apartment, my laptop open to patient files, and felt the cold water of recognition move through me. She had recognized me. Lillie. And she was threatening me with the one thing she thought could still break me.

I took a screenshot of each image. I saved the metadata. I forwarded everything to Forrest with a simple message: *She knows.* Then I blocked the number.

Within the hour, another number sent the same images. I went through the same process. Screenshot. Save. Forward. Block.

I closed my laptop and sat in the dark for a moment. Outside, Seattle continued its gentle rain against my windows. Safe. Controlled. Mine.

Lillie thought she was threatening me with my past. She didn't understand. My past was exactly what had made me unbreakable.
