Mistaken Love Fading Like Smoke

That morning, while I was busy with work, Frank showed up at my office.

Sitting casually on the sofa with one leg crossed over the other, he smirked. "Boss Alex, tomorrow’s the big day—you’re marrying Lucy. Let me offer my early congratulations. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness."

I smiled but didn’t respond.

He began to grow impatient. "So, when do you think we can resume our partnership? You wouldn’t want this little misunderstanding to ruin the goodwill between us, would you?"

I raised an eyebrow. "Goodwill? Between us?"

His tone turned threatening. "Lucy sees me as her family. One call from me and your wedding tomorrow could go up in smoke. Believe that?"

I nearly burst out laughing.

I hadn’t realized Frank was capable of such idiotic arrogance.

"Go ahead. Call her." I gestured for him to proceed.

I was curious to see how Lucy would react to this call.

"This is what you wanted!" he snapped and quickly dialed her number.

Lucy answered almost immediately. "Senior, why are you calling now? I’m not free at the moment."

Her tone was patient and warm—something she rarely showed me.

Frank shot me a smug look before replying, "I’m with Alex right now. I came to talk about resuming our partnership. Why don’t you have a word with him for me?"

He handed me the phone.

The warmth in Lucy’s voice disappeared. "Alex, why are you still making things hard for him? We’re getting married tomorrow. Can’t you just let him off the hook for my sake?"

My tone turned cold. "Lucy, let me ask you this: do you want us to get married, or do you want me to continue working with Frank?"

Frank’s face fell. "No, that’s not what I meant—"

I cut him off with a wave and pressed on with my question. "You can only choose one. If you want me to work with Frank, tomorrow’s wedding is off."

Disappointment filled her voice as she scolded, "Alex, why are you being so childish? There’s nothing between me and Frank. Do you really have to target him like this?"

She insisted there was nothing between them, yet in the past few days, they had checked into hotels five times.

I forced a smile. "So, you’d rather cancel the wedding?"

There was silence on the other end for a few seconds before she responded softly, "No… I want to be your bride tomorrow. As for Senior, can we talk about it later, husband?"

Her tone was pleading.

I could see it now—she truly wanted to marry me.

"Fine," I replied indifferently.

But in my heart, I thought: Lucy, there won’t be a ‘later.’

I tossed the phone back to Frank. "You’re welcome to attend the wedding tomorrow, but don’t even think about working with me again."

"You… You’ve got guts! We’ll see about this!" Frank spat before storming out.

To prepare for the wedding, I left the office early that day.

When I got home, Lucy’s parents were there, but she was nowhere to be seen.

That was when the private investigator contacted me again.

"Mr. Alex, your fiancée just got into that man’s car. They’re still inside and it seems like… well…"

He sent over a video.

I clicked it. The footage clearly showed the car rocking back and forth.

It seemed Frank had worked himself into a rage earlier and now needed Lucy to calm him down.

"Got it. Thanks," I replied, surprisingly calm.

Because I knew tomorrow would bring a storm neither of them could escape.

The day of the wedding arrived quickly.

It was held at the most luxurious hotel in Texas City.

Lucy, eager to show off, invited a large group of her university friends to our wedding.

Naturally, Frank was among them.

He even sneaked into the dressing room to be alone with Lucy for over ten minutes. When he returned to the banquet hall, his smug expression made my blood boil.

The ceremony began as the emcee officially announced the start of the wedding.

As Lucy and I prepared to step onto the stage, I felt the adrenaline rushing through my veins—my carefully planned show was about to begin.

“Now, the bride and groom will exchange rings,” the emcee declared.

Lucy stood in her ornate wedding gown, eyes sparkling with anticipation as she waited for me to slip the diamond ring onto her finger.

The best man handed me the ring box.

I opened it. Inside wasn’t a ring but a remote control.

Pressing the button, I replaced the sentimental video Lucy had meticulously prepared with something far more revealing—footage of her affair with Frank.
