Chapter 4

El reloj de la pared dio las doce, declarando la medianoche que se acercaba.

Con una amplia sonrisa, ella lo miró. "Te prometo que firmaré el acuerdo de divorcio mañana".

Cristofer no se movió y solo frunció el ceño ante ella, como si midiera la credibilidad de sus palabras.

Mientras tanto, Estelle se levantó y se acercó a él. Apoyándose suavemente contra su pecho, le dio un beso en los labios.

"Cristofer, solo finge que todavía me amas. Te lo ruego. ¿Solo esta vez lo harás?"

A la mañana siguiente, Estelle fue despertada por el resplandor del sol.

Le dolían todo el cuerpo y se sentía vacía, como si su alma hubiera abandonado su cuerpo.

A pesar de que habían tenido relaciones sexuales la noche anterior, Cristofer nunca la había besado en los labios. Para él, era solo una tarea que podía hacerse sin rastro de emoción.

Hacer el amor supuestamente era la cosa más íntima que podía suceder entre amantes. Sin embargo, Estelle se sentía extremadamente triste después de hacer el amor con Cristofer.

No había calidez en la manta a su lado y su figura no estaba en ninguna parte en la villa. Cristofer se había ido horas antes.

Estelle luchó para levantarse y limpiar el desorden en la cama.

Cristofer había estado tan apurado que dejó su corbata en el piso.

Recogió la corbata, la dobló cuidadosamente y la guardó en la bolsa que siempre llevaba con ella. También había una foto de su hijo en su bolsa.

"Yohan, aguanta. " Acarició la pequeña cara en la foto y se sonó la nariz. "Estoy haciendo lo mejor que puedo para salvarte, mi hijo. Solo dame un poco más de tiempo, ¿de acuerdo?"

Las lágrimas corrían por su rostro y gotearon sobre la foto.

Estelle secó las lágrimas de la foto con ternura en sus ojos.

"El mundo me odia tanto que quiere quitarme todo, incluyéndote a ti. Pero no importa porque tengo a ti y te protegeré. Eres mi ser querido. Mientras vivas una buena vida, puedo soportar todo el sufrimiento."

En la mesita de noche había un montón de papeles.

Debe ser Cristofer quien los había dejado allí.

Estelle colocó la foto de nuevo en su bolso con tanta suavidad como pudo antes de leer los papeles.

Era el acuerdo de divorcio, lo cual no la sorprendió en absoluto.

Hojeó a través de él y no encontró términos especiales. Era casi el mismo que Cristofer había traído más temprano.

La única diferencia que llamó su atención estaba escrita al final: Estelle Hudson promete dejar la ciudad de Hadale para siempre y no regresar nunca más.

Parece que realmente no quieres verme más.

No te preocupes. No volverás a verme porque dejaré Hadale y incluso este mundo para siempre.

Con una sonrisa débil, ella firmó su nombre en la parte inferior.

Como de costumbre, Estelle fue al hospital para un chequeo al día siguiente de la inyección.

Notando las moretones en su cuello, el médico frunció el ceño. "Sra. Hans, ¿necesita que llame a la policía?"

Estelle negó con la cabeza y cubrió las marcas con su cuello. "No, gracias. ¿Cuándo sabré si estoy embarazada o no?"

"Siete días después, por lo menos", dijo el médico, "Sra. Hans, si todavía no está embarazada en siete días, por favor reciba quimioterapia antes de que sea demasiado tarde."

Estelle frunció el ceño y exhaló profundamente. "¿Cuánto tiempo puedo vivir si no recibo quimioterapia?"

"Seis meses como máximo. Pero con una quimioterapia oportuna, puede ser extendido a 3 a 5 años".

"No quiero recibir quimioterapia. Tengo que dar a luz a otro niño. Doctor, ¿podría comprarme nueve meses? No me importa qué método se utilice o cuánto cuesta".

"Bueno, tengo que advertirte que será muy doloroso en las últimas etapas del cáncer. Muchos pacientes pierden la voluntad de vivir debido a que no pueden soportar el dolor. Si quieres vivir más tiempo, tienes que luchar contra tu destino tú mismo."

Estelle suspiró aliviada. "Veo."

"El dolor es tan intenso y penetrante que los pacientes normalmente no pueden soportarlo."

"Puedo hacerlo", respondió Estelle mientras asentía. Para tranquilizarse, repitió: "Puedo hacerlo."

El doctor reveló una mirada triste. "Sra. Hans, eres el paciente más fuerte que he conocido."

Estelle sonrió ampliamente. "Todavía no soy lo suficientemente fuerte. Si fuera lo suficientemente fuerte, no habría terminado en un lío."

Estelle se deslumbró con la luz del sol mientras salía del hospital.

Se entrecerró los ojos ante el sol, que era bastante radiante y cálido. Luego, sonó su teléfono. Era una llamada de Cristofer.

¡Él me llama!

Estelle no podía evitar que sus manos temblaran y casi dejará caer el teléfono.

"¿Cristofer?"

"¿Has firmado el papel?" Cristofer fue directo al grano, ni siquiera se molestó en saludarla".

Al escuchar eso, quedó sin habla.

"Estelle, es mejor que no juegues trucos".

"No estoy jugando trucos. He firmado. Haré lo que prometí".

Cristofer inmediatamente dijo: "Entonces, Mr. Jones lo conseguirá".

"Lo siento, Cristofer. No puedo entregarte el acuerdo de divorcio en este momento".

Irritado, Cristofer gruñó con un tono frío y mordaz: "¡Estelle Hudson! ¿Qué demonios quieres de mí?!"

"Yo..."

"¡Ya estoy harta de que me engañaras para dormir contigo de esta manera despreciable. Si tanto necesitas a un hombre, puedo pagar para que te consigan uno. ¡No debiste haberme disgustado así!"

¿Por qué su voz suena tan familiar y al mismo tiempo tan extraña?

Nunca antes Cristofer había hablado tan cruelmente con Estelle desde que tenía 20 años. Un hombre gentil y afectuoso como él, en los viejos tiempos, hasta tenía miedo de lastimarla cuando la tomaba de la mano.

Le preguntó muchas veces si le dolía o no la primera vez que tuvieron sexo, y se ponía en pánico al ver la más mínima arruga en su rostro.

Pero ahora, sus palabras eran como un cuchillo frío que la apuñalaba en el corazón poco a poco.

Con una risa amarga, Estelle dijo suavemente: "Cristofer, ¿viste las estrellas anoche?"
