Chapter 2

The original intention behind establishing the private hospital had been to make Steven one of the top cardiologists in the country. I had invested the most money and managed the publicity.

Now, he truly was the hospital’s chief physician, praised by everyone. Even his most favored and beloved protégé, Kelly, had risen to prominence. And yet, I—the hospital’s largest shareholder—was now being used as a stepping stone beneath their feet.

Perhaps they believed I loved Steven too deeply, or that the hospital owed its current success solely to him. I hadn’t dared to anger Steven; both the hospital and I feared losing him. But they had forgotten—it was my hospital that had made him successful. Without him, I could have trained many other leading specialists.

Kelly replied to everyone’s comments with a smiling cat emoji and then sent Steven a kiss emoji in response.

The doorbell rang suddenly. It was the delivery man handed me a signed divorce agreement and a bag. I asked what it was.

He hesitated before replying, "A woman asked me to give this to you. She said you’re nearing menopause... bad temper of an old woman and she won’t bother with you anymore. This contains a menopausal oral solution. But... you look only about thirty."

I calmly told him to throw away the things Kelly had used to provoke me, then closed the door.

I took out the divorce agreement and carefully signed my name.

My phone vibrated a few times. It was a message from the hospital’s HR manager:

"Mrs. Parker, would you please reconsider? It doesn't matter with the others, but how could you send Doctor Steven and Kelly to Africa?"

"I know you’re upset after losing your children and you’re angry with Doctor Steven. But please keep your public and private lives separate and don’t resort to such dirty tactics. Not only are you harming two talented people, but you’re also costing countless patients their chance at survival."

I replied calmly, "You have a point. I forgot to punish you. You’re fired and I’ll have a third party take over your duties."

Right after that, I immediately contacted the third-party management group and asked them to take full control of the hospital’s personnel and logistics.

"Anyone who pleads for Steven and Kelly will be sent to Africa. Those who refuse will be required to reimburse their initial training costs."

I gently touched the children’s urns, speaking word by word.

The doctors who supported Kelly in the comments were all impoverished students I had once sponsored with my own money. I had given them the opportunity to study abroad. In the end, all they cared about was currying favor with Steven. They had completely forgotten who trained them to become excellent doctors.

As expected, they followed Steven’s lead. All ungrateful people were the same. People with eyes only for power and profit could never become truly good doctors. They needed to suffer more to understand the real meaning of a doctor’s compassion.

After hanging up, I noticed Steven had called me more than a dozen times in a row.

Finally, perhaps in a fit of rage, he even added me as a friend again—with the note: “Answering call.”

Just then, a new call came in. I answered. As soon as I picked up, he hurled insults at me.

"Are you crazy? I'm about to get my professional title reviewed and Kelly is getting a full-time job and you actually reported us to the African branch."

"Milena, the child is gone. I know you’re upset, but it’s God’s will! Our children were born with a condition. Even gods couldn’t save them. They were destined to die. It wasn’t me, nor Kelly, who wanted to harm them!"

He was panting, "I’ve told you countless times and you still insist on making things difficult for Kelly. I didn’t let you check the surveillance footage because I didn’t want you to keep going crazy! I didn’t expect you to start spreading obscene rumors about Kelly and I didn’t expect you to abuse your position and send her to Africa!"
