Chapter 3

The diner's fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as I stared at my reflection in the black coffee. Three weeks had passed since I'd walked out of Crescent Heights Memorial and into a new life. The woman looking back at me was almost unrecognizable—hair cut short and dyed auburn, colored contacts hiding my distinctive green eyes, wearing thrift store clothes instead of designer silk.

"Sophie Martinez" read the fake ID in my wallet, created by the underground network that helped supernatural beings escape abusive pack situations. For the first time in my life, I wasn't Sophia Reyes-Thorne, and the freedom was both terrifying and intoxicating.

"More coffee, hon?" The waitress—a Beta named Clara who'd become something like a friend—topped off my cup without waiting for an answer.

"Thanks." I managed a smile that felt more genuine each day.

Working at Murphy's Diner wasn't glamorous, but it was mine. Nobody here knew about Alpha bloodlines or pack politics. Nobody expected me to smile prettily while my world burned down around me.

The bell above the door chimed, and I glanced up from wiping tables. A man in his thirties entered, tall and broad-shouldered with kind brown eyes and an aura that immediately marked him as Beta. But there was something else—a calm strength that reminded me of deep forest waters.

"Just coffee, please," he said, sliding onto a counter stool.

As I poured his cup, our fingers brushed briefly. The contact sent an unexpected jolt through me—not the overwhelming dominance I was used to with Alexander, but something warmer. Steadier.

"I'm Daniel," he said quietly. "Daniel Chen."

"Sophie," I replied, using my new identity automatically.

He studied my face with the kind of professional attention that made me nervous. "You're not from around here."

It wasn't a question. My pulse quickened, but before I could deflect, he continued.

"I run a therapy practice across the street. Specialize in helping people who've experienced pack trauma."

The words hit like a gentle punch to the gut. He knew. Somehow, this stranger could see right through my carefully constructed new identity.

He's not a threat, Lyra whispered, stirring for the first time since the miscarriage. His wolf is... peaceful.

"I don't know what you mean," I said carefully.

Daniel's smile was understanding rather than predatory. "The first session is always free. No questions asked, no documentation required." He slid a business card across the counter. "Sometimes talking helps."

Before I could respond, the diner's atmosphere shifted. The temperature seemed to drop ten degrees as two figures entered—Alexander and another man I recognized as his head of security.

Alexander's eyes swept the diner methodically before locking onto mine. Even with my disguise, he'd found me. The fake ID, the new appearance, the careful distance—none of it had mattered.

"Sophie Martinez?" He approached slowly, like a predator stalking wounded prey. "Interesting name choice, wife."

The casual endearment dripped with malice. Around us, the few other patrons suddenly found reasons to leave, their supernatural instincts warning them away from whatever was about to unfold.

"You're mistaken," I said, proud of how steady my voice sounded. "I don't know you."

Alexander's laugh was sharp as broken glass. "Two years of marriage, and you don't know me? How hurtful." His Alpha pheromones began to fill the space—pine and winter frost underlaid with something darker. Something that promised consequences.

Daniel shifted beside me, his presence becoming more solid, more protective. "The lady asked you to leave."

"Did she?" Alexander's attention turned to Daniel with lethal focus. "And you are?"

"Someone who believes in consent," Daniel replied evenly.

The tension ratcheted higher. Alexander's security detail moved to flank the exits while Alexander himself stepped closer to the counter. This close, I could see the fury burning behind his controlled expression.

"Sophia," he said, dropping the pretense. "This little game ends now. You're coming home."

"No." The word escaped before I could stop it.

Alexander's eyes flashed with surprise, then anger. "Excuse me?"

Something was happening inside me—a warmth spreading from my chest outward, like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. Lyra's presence strengthened, and with it came something I'd never felt before: the absolute certainty that I would not submit.

"I said no." My voice carried a new quality, something that made Alexander take an unconscious step backward.

The air in the diner shimmered. For a moment, everything went silent—even the buzzing fluorescent lights seemed to pause. Then a wave of pure lunar energy erupted from my body, silver light dancing across my skin.

Alexander stumbled, his Alpha dominance crumbling in the face of something older, something primal. His security team dropped to their knees, overwhelmed by power they couldn't understand or resist.

"What—what are you?" Alexander gasped, staring at me like I'd transformed into something mythical.

I felt different—stronger, more complete than I'd ever been. The silver light continued to pulse around me, and I could feel every supernatural being in a three-block radius responding to it.

Daniel was the only one still standing, his expression filled with wonder rather than fear.

"She's what you never deserved," he said quietly.

Alexander's phone buzzed. Then again. Then it began ringing incessantly as every pack leader within fifty miles started calling, all of them sensing the massive surge of lunar power that had just announced itself to the supernatural world.

As Alexander fumbled with his phone, taking frantic calls from pack leaders demanding to know what had happened, I felt a presence approaching from outside. An elderly woman appeared in the diner's doorway, her silver hair gleaming and her eyes—the same bright silver as mine now glowed—fixed on me with ancient recognition.

"Finally," she said, her voice carrying the weight of centuries. "The true Luna awakens."

Alexander's face went white. Because if I was a true Luna—a direct descendant of the Moon Goddess herself—then everything was about to change.

Every contract, every alliance, every carefully maintained power structure in the werewolf world had just become irrelevant.

And I was just getting started.
