Chapter 1

The bond broke something in me at 10:14 p.m. on a Thursday, but it wasn't what Elliot thought.

I was halfway up the main stone staircase when I heard the shift behind me—the wet crack of bone reshaping, the low growl that every wolf in Shadowvale had learned to recognize with pity. Elliot's feral episodes. The condition he couldn't control. The affliction we all endured together.

I turned. His wolf was already there, massive and dark in the narrow stairwell, eyes gone flat and wrong. I opened my mouth to say his name—to reach him the way I always did—and he lunged.

The impact drove the air from my lungs. My hip hit the edge of a step. Then I was falling, stone edges catching my ribs, my shoulder, my leg snapping with a sound like a branch breaking underwater. I hit the landing and stopped moving.

Pack members were already running. I heard their voices, distant and overlapping. Someone shouted for the healer. Elliot shifted back to human form above me, naked and shaking, his face arranged into perfect horror.

But the bond—the mate bond we'd sealed five years ago, the sacred thing I'd trusted more than my own heartbeat—the bond told me something else.

Through the mark on my neck, still raw and open from the shock of impact, I felt it clearly: relief. Not the jagged panic of a mate who'd just hurt his partner. Not anguish or fear. Just a deep, satisfied exhale, like a man who'd finally gotten a difficult task done.

I pressed my thumb against the mark. The pain in my leg was white and absolute, but I kept my face still. I filed that feeling away behind my eyes and waited for the healers to reach me.

---

They set my leg in the infirmary. Healer Margot worked in silence, her hands efficient and impersonal. The bone had shattered cleanly—too cleanly, she said, for a simple fall. But she didn't say anything more. No one did.

Elliot visited twice that first day. He sat by the bed with his head in his hands, the picture of a devastated mate. He apologized. He said he didn't remember shifting, didn't remember the stairs. He said the episodes were getting worse.

I reached for his hand. I told him it wasn't his fault. I watched his shoulders loosen with relief.

The bond hummed between us, warm and present. I could feel his gratitude, his satisfaction that I was playing my part. That I was still his grateful, fragile Luna.

I smiled at him and thought about how easy it would be to break his wrist.

---

The second night, I woke at 2 a.m. to heat flooding through the bond.

Not the ambient warmth of Elliot sleeping in another room. This was specific. Intimate. The pressure of his skin against someone else's body, the shift of weight, the low sound of his breath catching.

I didn't move. I stared at the ceiling and followed the sensation down through the bond like a thread.

Rose and ash. Cloying and deliberate. Cynthia Meyer's scent, layered over my husband's skin like a second mark.

The bond transmitted everything: the heat, the texture, the satisfied exhale when he finished. I felt it all, clear and undeniable, while I lay alone in the infirmary with my shattered leg immobilized and my wolf—my wolf, silent for so many years—beginning to stir with a sound like a single low note struck on a string.

I pressed my thumb against the mark on my neck until the skin went white.

I did not cry.

I began constructing the architecture of what I would do next.

---

Lena came to change my bandages on the third morning. She was young, an Omega, and her hands shook when she worked. She'd always been loyal to me rather than Elliot. I'd known that for years.

I waited until she was leaning close, adjusting the wrapping on my leg.

"Lena," I said quietly. "The night Owen was born. You were there."

Her hands froze.

"I need to know what you saw."

She didn't look at me. Her voice came out barely above a whisper. "Luna, I—"

"Please."

The word hung between us. She swallowed hard, and I watched her try to hold the weight of what she knew against the steadiness in my eyes. She couldn't do it.

"He didn't die," she whispered. "Owen. He didn't die. I heard—I heard the Alpha talking to someone. Through the door. Cynthia Meyer took him. Somewhere outside pack territory. He'd be five now. Luna, I'm sorry, I didn't—"

She broke off and fled before I could say anything more.

I lay very still. My wolf, dormant for a decade, stirred again—louder this time, a growl that resonated in my chest.

Owen was alive.

Elliot had taken my son and given him to her.

I pressed both hands flat against the infirmary bed to keep them from shaking. I needed to move carefully now. I needed to be smarter than I'd ever been.

I waited three days. I monitored the bond until I felt Elliot distracted and distant—the particular quality that meant he was with Cynthia, too focused on her to notice anything else.

Then I reached out through the mind-link, pushing through the static of distance until I found the one thread I'd kept: Jared Cole. Shadowvale's exiled Gamma. The man Elliot had cast out years ago.

The connection was faint and it cost me. My message was stripped to essentials.

*Owen is alive. Cynthia Meyer has him. A cabin beyond pack territory. Find him. Document everything. Tell no one.*

There was a pause—long enough that I thought the link had broken.

Then Jared's reply came back, terse and certain: *Understood. I'll find him.*

I exhaled for the first time in days.

I had one operative outside Elliot's reach. One mission in motion. And a wolf that had just woken up inside me after ten years of silence.

It was enough to begin.

---

I asked to be moved back to the Luna quarters the next morning. I framed it carefully—told Elliot I wanted to feel like myself again, that I didn't want to burden the healers.

He agreed immediately. He was pleased. I could feel it through the bond, the satisfaction that I was still performing the role he'd assigned me.

What he didn't know: the Luna quarters had access to pack communication channels. A private desk whose records he'd never bothered to examine. And a window that faced the eastern forest boundary.

The direction Jared would come from.

I wasn't recovering.

I was repositioning.
