Chapter 1

Lily POV

Twelve years, and he still doesn’t know whose hands pulled him out of that river.

I signed the delivery manifest without reading it, because I already knew what today was going to cost me before I left the house.

Ronan’s birthday. One day, in a year, the Cross family throws a party big enough that even the wife he keeps locked out of everything else has to show up and stand next to him for photographs.

“Car’s ready,” Dean said, appearing in the doorway of the warehouse office with two coffees, handing me the one that wasn’t his. “You look like you’re heading to a funeral, not a party.”

“Might as well be.”

He didn’t push. Dean never pushed, that was the whole reason I trusted him with the parts of Sinclair Logistics I couldn’t trust to anyone the Cross family might reach. I finished the paperwork, grabbed my coat, and let him drive me to the house I hadn’t called home in nine months even though my name was still on the lease.

The Cross estate lit up gold against the evening, string lights strung through the garden, a jazz trio setting up near the pool. I stood in the driveway a full minute before I made myself walk in.

Ronan found me by the bar an hour later, drink in hand, tie already loosened the way it got when he was performing being relaxed for an audience.

“You’re late,” he said.

“I’m here.”

“Barely.” His eyes did the thing they always did lately, a flicker of something before the wall came back down. “Try to look like you want to be at my birthday, Lily . It’s not that hard a performance.”

“I signed a marriage license, not a screenplay.”

A cold smile curled at his lips.. He opened his mouth to say something else, and that was the exact moment the room went quiet behind me.

I titled my gaze and turned because everyone else did.

Freya stood in the doorway of the ballroom in a red dress, hair down, both legs steady under her like they had never once stopped working, and for one full second I forgot how to breathe.

My sister was supposed to be gone. My sister was supposed to be somewhere none of us could find her, the way she’d been for the last four years.

My sister was walking.

The room erupted because somebody screamed her name. Somebody’s champagne glass hit the floor and nobody bothered to clean it up. I stood frozen with my husband’s cold drink sweating against my hand and watched Ronan’s face do something I hadn’t seen in nine months of marriage.

He looked like he’d been struck.

“Freya.” Her name came out of him in a sharp voice

She crossed the room straight for him, and the crowd parted like she was still exactly who they remembered, golden, untouchable, alive. She didn’t look at me once, not when she reached him. Not when her hands landed on his chest like she was checking if he was real. Not when he pulled her into him so hard her feet nearly left the ground.

“You’re walking,” he said, voice breaking.

“A trial in Zurich,” she said against his shoulder. “It worked, Jules. I’m here and I’m back.”

Jules, nobody called him that, nobody but her.

I set my glass down on the bar because my hand had started to shake and I refused to let anyone in this room see it.

Freya finally turned, and when her eyes found mine, there was no surprise in them at all. Just the quiet, satisfied look of someone walking back into a house she never actually believed she’d lost.

“Lily ,” she said softly, like we were old friends. “You look well.”

“You’re alive,” I said. “That’s new information for everyone but apparently you.”

Ronan’s hand tightened on her waist. “Don’t.”

“Don’t what? Point out that my sister has been missing for four years and just strolled into your birthday party like she stepped out for coffee?”

“She’s been recovering.” His voice had gone hard, protective, the voice he used to use on me before he decided I didn’t deserve it. “Somewhere you clearly never bothered to look.”

I laughed, short and humorless, because that was easier than the alternative. “I spent two years looking for her, Ronan. You were the one who told me to stop wasting resources on a woman who ran because she couldn’t stand looking at what I did to her.”

“What you did to her.” Freya’s voice dropped, gentle, almost sorrowful, the exact tone she’d use on cameras years ago when she was performing gratitude for the girl who’d saved her life. Except this time the story had quietly rewritten itself so I was the one who owed the apology. “I don’t blame you for that night, Lily . I never did.”

It was, technically, true. She had never once said out loud that I’d been driving drunk and reckless. She had simply never corrected anyone else for saying it either.

Ronan’s jaw worked. For nine months he had looked at me like the woman who crippled his best friend. Now he looked at Freya like the miracle he’d been grieving, and something in his face had already started rearranging itself, deciding who deserved what, the way he always did.

“We need to talk,” he said to me. Quiet. Final.

“About what.”

His eyes went to Freya, then back to me, and I understood before he said a single word what was coming.

“Come by the study before you leave tonight,” he said. “Alone.”

I looked at my sister standing there in red with her hand still resting on my husband’s chest like she’d never taken it off, and felt the old cold calculation settle low in my stomach, quiet, patient, and completely awake.

“Sure,” I said. “Let’s talk.”

I didn’t know yet that I’d be signing divorce papers before midnight.

I only knew that for the second time in my life, I was standing in a room watching the world hand my sister credit for something that was never actually hers.
