Chapter 2

"Turn the key," Nikolai ordered.

I twisted the small brass key into the rusted slot of Locker 317. The metal door popped open with a dry squeak, revealing the dark, cramped interior.

No ransom note. No signs of a struggle.

Just a faded navy duffel bag sitting on the metal floor.

Lev, standing right behind Nikolai, reached in and hauled the bag onto the nearby steel bench. He unzipped it in one fluid motion.

Stacks of hundred-dollar bills sat perfectly aligned next to a spare passport photo of my sister, Sienna. Beside the cash lay a heavy brass token engraved with the words Saint Aurelia, and a single sheet of folded white paper.

I snatched the paper before Lev could touch it.

It was a copy of the merchant account authorization page for Bellini Blooms. My flower shop.

"She dragged my business into this," I said, my voice dropping. I traced the ink at the bottom of the page. "That's my signature. But this temporary authorization section..."

Nikolai stepped closer, his imposing frame blocking the harsh station lights. "Is it forged?"

"No." I gripped the edge of the paper. "Ten days ago, my father insisted I add Sienna as a temporary user. He claimed they needed to process wedding vendor refunds and final payments quickly. I thought I was just helping with the caterers."

"Convenient," Lev muttered.

"Pack up the originals and the copies," Nikolai told Lev, his tone strictly business. He turned his dark gaze to me. "Tell me exactly what limits she had on that account. Right now."

"She had access to wire transfers under ten thousand," I replied, the reality of my family's manipulation sinking in. "Victor opened a door for her, and I handed over the keys without knowing it."

Before Nikolai could respond, a heavy shoulder slammed into my side.

I stumbled hard against the lockers. A man in a stained baseball cap lunged past me, his hands grabbing the handles of the navy duffel bag.

He didn't make it two steps.

Lev hooked an arm around the man's neck and swept his legs out. The thief hit the linoleum floor with a sickening crack. Two of Nikolai’s guards materialized from the crowd, pinning the man’s wrists behind his back.

"Check his pockets," Nikolai commanded, not even blinking at the violence.

Lev patted the groaning man down. He pulled out a handful of heavy clay chips stamped with the Rossi family crest and a sleek black visitor card.

"Saint Aurelia," Lev read the gold foil print on the card. "Tonight's charity poker game."

"He was waiting for whoever opened the locker," Nikolai observed. He gestured to Lev. "Take the bag and the evidence to the car."

"Wait." I stepped in front of Lev, blocking his path. "You are not taking that authorization page. It's my shop. If she moved dirty money, I'm the one facing prison."

Nikolai looked down at me. "I am securing the evidence, Aria."

"Then secure a copy for me," I shot back, refusing to break eye contact. "I am not playing the blind, obedient wife while my business goes under."

Silence stretched between us. The station announcements echoed overhead.

"Fine," Nikolai finally said. "Lev, scan the document. Send her the file. But understand this rule, Aria. If either of us finds new evidence, we share it immediately."

"Agreed." I stepped aside, letting Lev pass.

"There's something else in the bottom of the bag," Lev noted, pausing to pull out a crumpled slip of thermal paper.

He handed it to me. It was a ride-hailing receipt.

The account name printed at the top was mine.

"Last night," I whispered, staring at the timestamp. "Sienna borrowed my phone. She said she needed to send two suitcases of dresses to the station early. I was busy checking floral inventory, so I just read her the verification code when the app prompted it."

"The car didn't just drop off luggage," Nikolai pointed out, tapping the destination log on the receipt. "It picked up a passenger at midnight."

The station manager checked the locker access record before we left. Locker 317 had been opened once at 9:58 that morning using Sienna's ticket and again only when I turned the key. Whoever expected the bag to disappear had been waiting for us, not cleaning up after her.

Twenty minutes later, we stood in the cramped security office of Grand Central. The station manager nervously cued up the midnight footage for the side entrance.

The grainy black-and-white video flickered onto the screen.

A woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat and dragging two large suitcases walked into the frame. Sienna.

A sleek black sedan idled by the curb. The rear door opened.

Sienna didn't hesitate. She didn't look over her shoulder for attackers. She handed her bags to the driver, turned to face the station camera for one fleeting second, and climbed into the back seat.

"Pause it," Nikolai ordered.

The manager froze the frame.

The man sitting in the back seat, half-illuminated by the streetlamp, was Damian Rossi.

My stomach plummeted. She wasn't kidnapped. She hadn't vanished in a panic. She walked out on her own two feet and got into a rival family's car.

"She went willingly," I said, the bitter truth tasting like ash.

Nikolai pulled the sleek black visitor card from his inside jacket pocket. He flipped it over.

"The invitation for tonight's game," he said, handing the card to me.

I stared at the name printed on the back.

It didn't say Sienna Bellini.

It said Mrs. Aria Volkov.

"They knew you would marry me," I said, my pulse hammering against my ribs. "They knew you would bring me into this."

"They set a trap," Nikolai agreed, his expression hardening. "I will not force you to walk into a Rossi game. You can go back to the estate."

I looked at the ride receipt in my hand, then at the forged paper that threatened my shop. My sister had used my name, my money, and my life to buy her freedom.

I shoved the visitor card into my clutch.

"I'm going," I told him.

At exactly seven o'clock, my phone buzzed in my palm.

A text message from an unknown number flashed across the screen.

Your sister left a ledger.
