Chapter 4

By nine that night, the house was completely still.

My mother had fallen asleep around eight. The rhythmic hiss of her oxygen machine was the only sound coming from the downstairs bedroom.

I went into the small kitchen to boil water.

Caspian was already there, leaning against the counter. He had washed the dinner plates and set them on a dry towel. The wind rattled the old windowpanes above the sink, cold and relentless from the ocean.

He didn't move away when I walked in. He just slid a clean ceramic mug toward me.

"Chamomile?" he asked.

"Black coffee," I said quietly. "It’s too quiet to sleep."

He turned on the burner. He didn't question it. We sat at the worn pine table in the center of the room. Between us sat two steaming mugs.

For four years, we had only seen each other across mahogany tables in federal court. We had traded sharp objections and cold stares. Out here, with the Atlantic crashing in the dark, the silence felt strange. But it didn't feel heavy.

"How did you start Lee Law?" I asked, looking up from my cup. "You were twenty-seven. No partners. No safety net."

Caspian looked into his coffee. "I rented an eight-hundred-square-foot office on 4th Street," he said, his voice low and steady. "The radiator clanked all night. I slept on a green vinyl sofa for eight months because I couldn't afford an apartment and the business lease at the same time."

I looked at him. I had never pictured Caspian Lee sleeping on a vinyl couch. He had always seemed so established. So solid.

"I didn't take shortcuts," he added. He looked straight into my eyes. "And I never asked anyone else to pay my way."

I stared down at my hands. My thumb found the edge of my wristwatch.

"I sold my condo," I said softly.

The words slipped out before I could stop them. I had never told anyone the full truth. Not even Serena.

"I was twenty-six," I continued. "Kingsley had the vision for Arnold Legal Group, but the banks wouldn't touch him without collateral. I sold the studio my grandmother left me. I handed him a cashier's check for three hundred and forty thousand dollars. That was our first lease on Park Avenue."

I waited for the usual pity. People always looked at me with sorrow when they realized how much I gave away.

Caspian didn't flinch. His expression didn't soften into cheap sympathy.

He simply looked at me, his dark eyes fierce and clear.

"You built half that firm," he said.

His voice was pure fact. No hesitation. No doubt.

I swallowed the lump in my throat. I looked out the dark window at the churning water.

"I know," I said.

A quiet warmth settled in my chest. Something between us shifted, slow and certain, like stone settling into place.

By two the next afternoon, my phone lit up on the kitchen island.

It was a text from Serena:

*Declan says Baxter just walked out of Kingsley’s office. He slammed the door so hard the glass rattled.*

I stared at the screen.

The Hartwell merger brief. It was due at five today.

Kingsley had filed it this morning without my final review. He had probably handed it off to Ember or a junior associate. But that file was three thousand pages of cross-border tax codes and delicate indemnities. I spent six months memorizing every single clause. It took me forty minutes to catch errors that would take another lawyer three days to find.

Two minutes later, my phone buzzed again.

It was an incoming call.

*Kingsley Arnold.*

I stood on the porch in the cold salt air. I swiped the screen and brought the phone to my ear.

"Azalea," his voice came through the speaker, fast and ragged. He sounded out of breath. The smooth, effortless charm was completely gone.

"Yes?" I said. My voice was level, flat, and clinical.

"The Hartwell brief," he rushed out. "The indemnity schedules are completely mismatched. Baxter called my personal cell ten minutes ago. He was screaming. He gave us seventy-two hours to file an amended draft, or he's pulling all his corporate accounts from the firm."

I leaned against the wooden railing. I looked out at the grey dunes.

"That's unfortunate," I said.

"Unfortunate?" Kingsley’s voice cracked with pure panic. "Azalea, Baxter is forty percent of our billable revenue! You need to log into the remote server and fix the tax cross-references. Now. I know you have the master notes."

"I don't have access to the server," I said smoothly. "I turned in my credentials yesterday."

"Then have IT restore them!" he shouted. I could hear papers rustling frantically in the background. "Stop playing games. Ember tried to format the schedules and made it worse. Azalea, you can't be this spiteful."

"I am no longer an employee of Arnold Legal Group," I said. Every syllable was calm. Precise. Unshakable. "I cannot assist with firm matters."

"You're doing this just to hurt me," he hissed. "You're being petty and spiteful over nothing."

"I'm being accurate," I said.

I ended the call.

I lowered the phone from my ear. The silence of the beach rushed back in, clean and wide.

Three seconds later, the screen lit up again.

*Incoming Call: Kingsley Arnold.*

The phone vibrated against the wood. Once. Twice. Three times.

I didn't pick up. I turned my back to the screen, leaned my elbows on the salt-bleached railing, and watched the tide roll in.
