Chapter 30

The restrictions began immediately.

No announcement. No ceremony. Just quiet enforcement, the kind meant to feel reasonable while tightening slowly.

I noticed it first in the way I was followed.

Not closely. Not obviously. Just enough that I was never fully alone anymore. Someone always nearby. Someone always pretending to be busy. Drawing water. Fixing a fence. Standing guard under the excuse of routine.

Observation, they called it.

It felt like being held under glass.

The forest noticed too.

That morning, the warmth in my chest flared the moment I stepped outside. Not alarm. Not anger. Awareness. Like something was holding itself still on purpose.

I did not go to the boundary.

That choice cost me more than I expected.

Corvin found me near the old granary, sitting on a low stone wall, watching the clouds drift overhead.

"You're restless," he said.

"I'm restrained," I corrected.

He sat beside me, hands folded over his staff. "Sometimes restraint is the loudest signal."

"To who?" I asked.

"To those paying attention."

By midday, the travelers made their next move.

They requested a formal session. Not a council gathering. Not a public discussion.

A private interview.

With me.

Elder Maelin hesitated, but refusal would have only fed their narrative. Control always prefers cooperation to force, at least in the beginning.

So the meeting was arranged.

The old archive room had never felt smaller.

Shelves lined the walls, heavy with records and histories that no one read unless something went wrong. The travelers stood opposite me, calm, composed, perfectly comfortable.

Corvin remained by the door. Silent. Present.

"You're adapting faster than expected," the woman said.

"I've been adapting my whole life," I replied.

She smiled faintly. "Then you understand why adaptability matters."

"You didn't call this meeting to compliment me," I said.

"No," she agreed. "We called it to clarify."

The man on her left stepped forward. "Your connection to the forest is... unique. Rare. Historically disruptive."

"Historically misunderstood," I countered.

"History is written by outcome," he replied smoothly. "Not intention."

I leaned back slightly. "Then tell me the outcome you're aiming for."

The woman's eyes sharpened.

"Stability," she said. "Regional stability."

"There it is," I murmured.

"You're a variable," she continued. "One that could inspire alignment or rebellion, depending on how you're handled."

Handled.

Corvin shifted, his grip tightening on his staff.

"I'm not a weapon," I said calmly.

"No," she agreed. "You're influence. Which is more dangerous."

I met her gaze. "And you think locking me down will remove that?"

She studied me for a moment. Then nodded once. "It will limit it."

"And if it doesn't?" I asked.

Her smile returned. Thin. Calculated.

"Then stronger measures become justified."

The words settled like ice in my veins.

"I won't leave the village," I said quietly. "I won't betray the forest. And I won't let you turn fear into policy."

The man sighed. "You speak as though you have leverage."

"I do," I replied.

They waited.

"I haven't crossed the boundary," I continued. "I haven't called them forward. I haven't responded to every pull I feel."

The Alpha's presence stirred faintly at the edge of my awareness.

"That restraint," I said, "is the only reason you're still talking instead of evacuating."

Silence filled the room.

For the first time, uncertainty flickered across their faces.

"You're threatening us," the woman said carefully.

"No," I replied. "I'm explaining balance."

When the meeting ended, nothing was resolved.

Which meant everything had shifted.

That evening, whispers spread through the village.

Some blamed me for provoking attention. Others blamed the travelers for stirring unrest. A few quietly began asking questions that had never been asked before.

What if fear wasn't protection.

What if control wasn't safety.

I returned to the boundary after nightfall.

Not openly.

Not defiantly.

Just honestly.

The Alpha emerged slowly, his presence grounding, familiar.

"They're testing limits," I said.

He inclined his head.

"They want to isolate me," I continued. "Turn me into a symbol instead of a person."

He stepped closer, stopping just short of the line.

"They don't understand what you are," he said without words.

"I'm starting to," I replied.

The forest hummed low and steady around us.

"They'll force a mistake," I said. "Not from me. From someone else."

The Alpha's gaze darkened.

"They always do."

The mistake came sooner than expected.

It happened two nights later.

A child went missing.

Panic tore through the village like wildfire.

Parents screamed names into the dark. Torches flared. Guards were dispatched. The travelers were suddenly everywhere, organizing, directing, controlling the chaos they had predicted.

I felt it instantly.

The pull. Sharp. Urgent. Wrong.

"She's near the ravine," I said, breathless as Corvin reached me.

"You can't be sure," he said.

"I am," I replied. "She wandered too close. She's scared."

The travelers moved in quickly.

"This is exactly why restrictions exist," the woman said sharply. "No interference."

"I'm not interfering," I snapped. "I'm helping."

"You'll escalate it," the man warned.

"I'll end it," I shot back.

Elder Maelin hesitated, torn.

"She's right," Corvin said firmly. "This isn't aggression. It's awareness."

The woman's eyes hardened. "If she crosses that boundary-"

"I won't," I said. "I don't need to."

I closed my eyes.

Listened.

Felt.

The forest responded instantly, not with motion, but with direction. A quiet guiding presence, pulling my awareness toward a narrow path near the ravine's edge.

"She's caught between roots," I said. "Unhurt. Just trapped."

The Alpha's presence surged, controlled and precise.

Within minutes, the child was found exactly where I said she would be.

Unharmed.

Shaking.

Alive.

Relief flooded the village.

But the travelers looked... unsettled.

Because certainty had just broken their narrative.

That night, I stood at the boundary again.

"They'll escalate," I said softly.

"Yes," the Alpha agreed.

"I won't hide," I continued. "But I won't burn bridges either."

He stepped closer than ever before, still respecting the line.

"You're becoming what they fear," he said.

I met his gaze steadily.

"Only because they refuse to understand it."

Behind us, the village slept uneasily.

Ahead of us, the forest waited.

And somewhere between the two, I realized something undeniable.

Watching eyes could not stop what had already begun.

They could only decide how much damage they caused trying.
