Chapter 2

[MARA'S POV]

Dawn filtered through the heavy blackout shades in thin, pale strips of gray.

The man beside me remained deeply asleep. His broad chest rose and fell in steady rhythms, one heavy arm thrown across the dark duvet. The white cotton towel I had bound over his ribs was stained with a patch of dried rust, but the bleeding had completely stopped.

I slipped out from under the sheets without making a sound.

My hotel uniform lay wrinkled near the edge of the rug. I pulled the gray trousers and tailored vest back on, fastening each button with cold, steady fingers. My muscles ached from the intensity of the night, but my mind was completely clear.

I did not ask for his name, and he did not ask for mine.

On the dark wood of the nightstand, beside his heavy black handgun, lay a short coil of fine silver tailoring thread. It had unwound from my wrist, where I always kept a strand wrapped for quick alterations during banquet events.

I left it lying on the polished wood.

I stepped into the quiet hallway, letting the heavy suite door latch shut behind me. The electronic lock engaged with a soft click.

Waiting for the service elevator, I pulled my phone from my pocket.

Four years of unanswered messages, broken promises, and hidden dates stared back at me in the chat history.

I typed three words.

*We're done.*

I hit send.

The phone rang before the elevator even reached the lobby.

Nico's name flashed across the bright screen.

I pressed answer and brought the phone to my ear.

"Where the hell are you?" Nico snapped, his tone sharp and irritated. "Do you have any idea what happened last night? The ballroom was attacked by rival shooters. I spent half the night coordinating with security and family capos, and you weren't backstage where you were supposed to be."

"I was there," I said calmly. "I saw the announcement. I saw the ring."

A brief silence hung on the line. When Nico spoke again, his voice was heavy with impatient arrogance.

"Mara, you're being completely unreasonable. The engagement was arranged by my father months ago. The Rossi family controls the shipping ports on the East Coast. It's a strategic alliance for the syndicate. You knew I would have to take over the family business eventually."

"You used the ring I picked up from the private jeweler," I said. "You looked me in the eye and told me tonight was our night."

"Because the ring fit the public image," he said, exhaling loudly. "Listen to me. It's strictly business. Celeste understands how our world operates. Nothing has to change between us. You keep the apartment in Soho. My driver will still drop off your monthly allowance, and I'll spend my weekends with you just like always. You don't throw away four years over a political contract."

A soft rustle of silk came through the receiver, followed by a woman's low, mocking laugh.

"Give me the phone, baby," Celeste's voice purred in the background.

A moment later, Celeste spoke directly into the mic.

"Mara, sweetie. Are you still throwing a tantrum?"

I kept my hand firmly clamped around the phone. "Celeste."

"Nico is far too polite to say it to your face, so let me do you a favor," Celeste said, her tone smooth and amused. "All those urgent business trips to Chicago and Miami this past year? The weekends when he told you syndicate meetings kept him busy until dawn? He spent every single one of those nights in my bed. You were just his convenient little seamstress who pressed his suits and kept him company when I was out of town."

The confession landed like ice against my skin, washing away the last lingering doubt in my chest.

"Thank you, Celeste," I said, my voice steady. "You just saved me from wasting another year."

"Mara, wait—" Nico's voice barked in the background.

I ended the call.

I opened his contact card, tapped block, and deleted the thread. Then I blocked Celeste's number.

[DAMIAN'S POV]

In Suite 3107, Damian opened his eyes to an empty room.

The sheets beside him were cold.

He sat up against the headboard, ignoring the tight pull of the bandage along his ribs. His gray eyes swept across the quiet suite. There was no note, no lingering perfume, and no sign of the woman who had pressed her hands against his chest in the dark.

He reached toward the bedside table for his weapon.

His fingers brushed against a thin strand of metallic silver thread resting beside the steel barrel.

Damian picked up the delicate silver strand, turning it between his thumb and index finger.

A quiet knock sounded at the suite door. Marcus, his personal enforcer, stepped inside with a guarded expression.

"Boss," Marcus said, bowing his head slightly. "The perimeter is cleared. The gunmen from last night have been dealt with."

Damian held up the silver thread. "Find the girl who was tailoring banquet gowns backstage last night. Pull the staff registry."

"Yes, sir."

Ten minutes later, Marcus returned and handed a slim paper folder across the table.

"Her name is Mara Solis," Marcus reported. "She's worked as the hotel's senior wardrobe specialist for three years. No criminal record. Clean background."

Damian opened the file. His eyes locked onto her photograph—the sharp jawline, the dark, defiant eyes—before trailing down to the emergency contact listed at the bottom.

*Emergency Contact: Nico Bellini.*

*Relationship: Partner.*

Damian's thumb pressed firmly against the printed name.

His nephew.

The woman who had pulled him into the cedar wardrobe, stitched his wound without flinching, and spent the night in his arms was the secret lover Nico had kept hidden for years.

A cold, dangerous calm settled over Damian's features.

[MARA'S POV]

By noon, I had submitted my official resignation to the hotel manager's office.

I returned to the Soho apartment only to pack what was mine.

Every luxury gift Nico had ever bought me—the watches, handbags, and jewelry—stayed behind in neat rows on the kitchen counter. I kept only my clothes, my tailoring kit, my passport, and the battered sketchbook that had belonged to my mother. The silver pendant from our first anniversary went into a padded envelope addressed to Nico. I dropped it at the courier desk downstairs before I left.

By one o'clock, the apartment key was in an envelope with the doorman. I carried one suitcase and my sewing case out to the curb, got into a cab, and did not look back.
