Chapter 4

SERENA'S POV

Five days after we left Julian, I stood beneath the chandeliers of the Laurent Grand Hotel's ballroom with Lily's hand in mine.

The autumn charity gala was my first public appearance since returning to the family business. My appointment as principal trustee of our private family trust had been completed that week. The charitable trust hosting tonight's benefit was a separate organization, not my personal account. I wore a midnight-blue silk gown from the family suite, one I had left there years ago.

Arthur had filed for divorce on Monday and arranged service through Julian's counsel. Our lawyers were working on an interim parenting plan. None of that had stopped Julian from texting me that renting a Laurent hotel suite didn't make me an heiress.

Lily wore the pink tulle dress we'd chosen together on Monday. Vanessa's garment bag had stayed at the country club. My daughter pressed close to me, watching the unfamiliar adults.

"Serena?"

The familiar voice was sharp with disbelief.

I turned to see Julian approaching from the bar. He wore a custom Tom Ford tuxedo, perfectly styled, with Vanessa clinging lightly to his arm. Vanessa was dressed in an ivory off-the-shoulder gown, her sapphire pendant catching the ballroom lights.

Julian's eyes swept over my dress, then down to Lily, before settling on my face with a mixture of irritation and smug satisfaction.

"How did you get in here?" Julian asked under his breath, lowering his voice as other guests drifted past. "Did you use my corporate RSVP from last month? Serena, this is a five-thousand-dollar-a-plate charity ball. You can't just crash high-society functions because you regret walking out of our penthouse."

Vanessa smiled at me. "You brought Lily? I thought the children were supposed to stay in the family lounge until their dance. Or is a private nanny already out of your budget?"

"You offered to bring her yourself at lunch," I said. "And yes, Lily has her own invitation."

Julian let out a quiet scoff. "Stop pretending. You heard my investors were flying in tonight, so you put on an old dress and brought our daughter as a prop to guilt me into reconciling."

Before I could answer, two older men in dark bespoke suits approached our circle.

"Julian," one of them said, extending a hand. "I see you're already mingling. We were reviewing the fourth-quarter expansion figures Hart Development submitted."

Julian's posture straightened instantly. He shook the man's hand, slipping into his polished executive persona. "Mr. Albright. It's an honor. We're fully prepared to move forward with the European syndicate."

Mr. Albright glanced at me, then at Lily. "And who is this lovely family?"

"My wife, Serena," Julian said. "We're navigating an amicable separation. She runs a small pottery studio, so she isn't involved in our corporate portfolio."

Vanessa smiled warmly at the investors. "Serena makes pottery. It's a wonderful hobby, really. But Julian has always shouldered the real responsibilities alone."

Julian turned back to me, his voice softening as if I were the one making a scene. "As I told you earlier, Serena, you don't need to do this. I'm still more than willing to pay your allowance and maintain your living expenses so you don't struggle. You don't have to put on a desperate display in front of my associates."

The condescension in his voice was thick, smooth, and practiced. He spoke as if I were a charity case he was graciously managing.

Mr. Albright looked away. Neither investor challenged him.

I took a glass of sparkling water from a passing tray. My grip tightened around the stem. I had managed a business, raised our daughter, and built a life he used every day. In his version, none of it counted.

A light tug pulled at the hem of my gown.

I looked down. Lily was staring up at me, her brown eyes wide and clear.

Lily's gaze moved from my hand on the glass to her father's face.

"Mommy?" Lily whispered, her small voice cutting through the hum of the crowd. "Do you want to go home?"

A quiet ache settled in my chest. I knelt down, smoothing a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

"In a few minutes, baby," I said softly.

"I don't like Daddy's friends," Lily said, loud enough for Julian and Vanessa to hear. "They talk mean to you."

Julian's face tightened with sudden anger. "Lily, quiet down. You are embarrassing me in front of senior executives."

"She's five years old, Julian," I said, rising to my feet and looking him dead in the eye. "And she has better manners than anyone standing next to you."

I set my glass on a passing server's tray. Arthur was due to meet us near the VIP tables; I would take Lily to the family lounge with him.

Before I could take her hand, Lily stepped away from me.

She didn't run. She didn't cry.

With quiet, steady purpose, my five-year-old daughter turned her back on Julian and began walking across the polished marble floor.

"Lily?" I called after her, startled.

I followed close behind her, asking a pair of guests to let us through. Lily marched past the champagne towers, past the center floral arrangements, heading directly toward the raised VIP alcove at the head of the ballroom.

Sitting at the primary table, entirely alone in an island of empty chairs, was Dante Moretti.

People called him the Don when they thought he couldn't hear. I recognized Dante Moretti from the shipping profiles Julian left open on his tablet, and from the careful way my grandfather spoke his name. Moretti Maritime held port and shipping interests across the world. His family's other business was discussed in whispers. He wore a black three-piece suit without a tie and a matte ceramic watch.

Julian had complained for two years that he couldn't get a meeting with Moretti's logistics team. Looking at the empty chairs around Dante, I understood why approaching him took nerve.

Lily pointed toward the man sitting alone. "He hasn't got a dancing partner either, Mommy." Before I could answer, she crossed the last few feet to his table.

One of the men standing behind the alcove shifted toward us. Dante lifted a hand, and the man stopped.

She stopped right in front of Dante's chair. Standing on her tiptoes, she reached up with her small hand and placed her fingers gently over the dark band of his watch.

Dante didn't flinch. He lowered his crystal glass to the dark wood table and looked down at the tiny girl in pink tulle. His expression remained calm as he waited for her to speak.

"Hello," Lily said, her voice carrying clearly in the sudden silence of the room.

Dante tilted his head slightly. "Hello."

Lily looked past him toward the dance floor, then back into his dark eyes.

"Mister," Lily asked, her tone entirely serious. "Can you dance with my mommy? Nobody asked her."

A suffocating hush descended over the ballroom.

Behind me, Vanessa gasped. Julian caught up with us, his face suddenly pale.

"Serena, grab her!" Julian hissed under his breath, panic finally cracking through his composure. "Get her away from him right now!"

I was close enough to take Lily's hand. His calm expression made me pause.

Dante didn't look at Julian. He didn't look at the whispering crowd, nor did he pull his arm away from Lily's small fingers.

He lifted his gaze to me, standing a few feet from his table.

His eyes locked onto mine. There was no pity in his stare, no mockery, and no condescending amusement. There was only an intense, unyielding clarity.

He looked back down at Lily, his deep voice carrying through the quiet air.

"Only if your mother says yes."

The room remained frozen, waiting.

I looked at Dante, feeling the steady beat of my heart against my ribs. I gave a single, quiet nod.

Arthur arrived at my shoulder. I asked him to stay with Lily, and she took his hand before Dante pushed back his chair.

He stood, buttoned his jacket, and stepped down from the alcove. Julian moved into the narrow space between us.

Julian held out a hand, his voice trembling. "Mr. Moretti, I am deeply sorry for the intrusion. My wife has no idea..."

Dante walked right past Julian as if the man were made of glass.

He stopped two feet in front of me. Looking down, he extended his right hand, palm up, waiting for my answer.

"May I?" he asked.
