Chapter 1

I saved the best seat for my husband at our four-year-old daughter’s first ballet recital.

He promised Lily he would be there.

He never came.

Instead, a driver delivered a diamond princess crown with a card that said, Daddy is proud of you.

Then I saw the photo Vanessa posted.

My husband was fastening a necklace around his first love’s throat while my daughter kept staring at an empty chair.

Three days later, Lily placed his crown back into his hands.

“I don’t want to be your princess anymore.”

So I took my daughter and left.

At the charity gala after our divorce, my ex laughed when he saw me.

Then Lily slipped out of my hand and walked straight toward the one man nobody in the ballroom dared approach.

She grabbed Mafia Don Dante Moretti’s hand.

“Sir, can you dance with my mommy?”

The entire ballroom went silent.

Dante looked at me.

Then he stood.

SERENA'S POV

I knelt on the cold backstage floor, smoothing the layers of Lily's pink tutu while she watched the door over my shoulder.

"Will Daddy know which one is me?"

"Of course he will."

"We're all wearing pink."

I tied the satin ribbon around her bun. "You'll be the one doing the big turn."

She grinned and demonstrated it in the narrow space between my knees and a rack of costumes. One slipper caught on the other. I caught her before she fell.

"Maybe save that for the stage."

"Daddy said he'd clap the loudest."

My phone sat on the bench beside her dance bag. Julian's last message was still the one he'd sent at lunch.

Seven o'clock. I have it in my calendar.

I had put it there myself. I'd also sent the parking instructions, bought his ticket, and laid his navy jacket across our bed before leaving the penthouse.

There was nothing left for me to do except believe him.

Miss Claire appeared in the doorway, a clipboard pressed to her chest. "Five minutes, little dancers. Parents, please find your seats."

Lily caught my sleeve.

"Tell Daddy I'm on the right. His right, not my right."

"I will."

She kissed my cheek, leaving a sticky patch of strawberry lip balm. Then she joined the line of five-year-olds, checking the door one last time.

I waited until she was facing the stage before I called Julian.

Voicemail.

I sent a message instead.

She's going on now. Where are you?

The little word Delivered appeared beneath it.

Nothing else did.

In the auditorium, I found our two seats near the center and put the program on Julian's chair. A father in the row ahead crouched beside his younger child, explaining which dancer was her sister. Another balanced a bouquet across his knees.

I opened my camera before the lights dimmed. At least Julian would have the video.

The thought made me lower the phone.

He already had videos. He had Lily blowing out candles, opening presents, losing her first tooth. My phone was full of moments I'd recorded for a man who kept promising to make the next one.

Tonight, she had asked for him.

I raised the phone anyway. Someday she might want to watch herself, even if he never did.

The curtain opened. Twelve little girls stood beneath the lights, and Lily found me almost at once. Her eyes moved to the program on the empty chair.

I lifted my hand and smiled.

She smiled back, smaller than before.

The music started. She pointed her toes, raised her arms, and counted under her breath, exactly as she'd practiced beside my pottery wheel while I finished customer orders.

Then came the turn.

She wobbled, caught herself, and landed with both feet in place. I clapped before anyone else. She looked straight at Julian's seat.

The program hadn't moved.

By the final bow, my cheeks hurt from smiling. I sent Julian the video before going backstage.

Miss Claire released the children to their parents at the backstage door. Lily came out holding a paper star with her name on it.

"Did Daddy get stuck outside?"

"I haven't heard from him yet."

"Can we wait? He doesn't know where backstage is."

I helped her into her cardigan and sat beside her on the bench. "For a little while."

She placed the paper star on her lap and smoothed its bent corner.

Around us, flowers changed hands. Shoes were changed, photographs taken. One girl complained that her father had shouted her name too loudly.

Lily watched them leave.

I called again. And again.

On the fifth call, Julian declined it.

A message arrived seconds later.

Caught up. Don't start, Serena.

"Is that him?" Lily asked.

I turned the screen toward my knee. "He can't get here right now."

"But I'm finished."

"I know."

She looked at the darkened stage through the open doorway. "I could do it again. Just for him."

I pressed my lips to her hair because I didn't trust myself to answer.

My phone lit up with a notification from Julian's private story. His posts were usually new cars or tables at restaurants with impossible waiting lists.

I opened it.

Vanessa sat beneath the gold lights of a restaurant I'd asked him to take me to for our anniversary. He'd said the food wasn't worth the trouble.

A pear-cut sapphire rested at her throat. In the short video, Julian's hand reached into frame to straighten the pendant. His wedding band caught the light.

Vanessa laughed.

The caption read: To fresh starts.

Posted six minutes ago.

I saved the video, then put the phone away before Lily could see it.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, baby?"

"Can you ask Daddy if he wants to see the turn tomorrow?"

Miss Claire came back carrying her coat. She looked at Lily, then at the empty hallway.

"We're closing up, Serena. I'm sorry."

"Of course. We're ready."

Lily wasn't ready. She tucked the paper star into my bag as carefully as if it might break, then took my hand.

Outside, she looked up and down the curb before letting me help her into the car.

At ten o'clock, she was still awake on our living-room sofa.

Her tutu was draped over the armrest. She had insisted on keeping it downstairs in case Julian came home and asked to see her dance.

I'd called him twelve times by then.

"Bed, sweetheart," I said.

"Five more minutes?"

I sat beside her. "No more waiting tonight."

Her mouth tightened. "Was I bad at it?"

"Lily. Look at me."

She did, reluctantly.

"You were wonderful. Daddy missing your dance has nothing to do with how well you did."

"Then why didn't he come?"

I couldn't tell her he was working. Not with that video on my phone.

"He chose to be somewhere else. That was his choice, not something you did wrong."

She leaned against me, her small fingers worrying the edge of my sleeve.

"You came."

"Always."

I carried her to bed and stayed until she fell asleep. Then I set her paper star beside the photograph on her dresser: Julian at her first birthday, wearing a cardboard crown while she grabbed at it with both hands.

I turned off the lamp.

Back in the living room, I opened the message from Arthur Thorne that I'd spent Friday trying not to answer.

The draft is ready whenever you are, Serena.

We'd been discussing my options for weeks. I had kept asking him to wait.

I typed three words.

Send it over.

Then I sat down on the dark sofa and waited for my husband one last time.
