Chapter 3

The heavy footsteps on the stairs echoed before the shadow fell across the landing.

I didn't have time to shove Maisie inside the apartment. The silhouette turned the corner, stepping under the flickering yellow bulb of the hallway.

Sebastian.

He wore a tailored camel-wool coat that looked entirely out of place against the peeling wallpaper and water-stained floorboards. His dark hair was styled to perfection, not a single strand displaced by the chill outside. He stood there with his hands buried in his pockets, looking at us as if he were inspecting a piece of mismanaged real estate.

"Did you really think a fourteen-hundred-dollar-a-month dump would keep you hidden, Elena?" His voice was smooth, carrying the same polished arrogance that used to freeze the blood in my veins.

My knuckles turned white around the folded top of our pastry bag. I pulled Maisie further behind my legs, my body rigid.

Sebastian didn't look at my terror. His gaze dropped to the little girl peering around my thigh. His cold expression melted into an oily, practiced warmth. He crouched down on one knee, opening his arms wide.

"Maisie, sweetheart," he said softly, offering a rehearsed smile. "Look at you. You've gotten so big. Come give Daddy a hug."

Sebastian held his arms open as if he expected her to run to him, as if the fantasy reunion would happen exactly the way he wanted.

Instead, Maisie pulled back violently. She buried her face in the denim of my jeans, her two small hands twisting into the fabric. Her entire body began to shake.

She was only a toddler when I ran, but a child doesn't forget terror. She remembered the sound of porcelain smashing against dining room walls. She remembered the shouting behind locked doors and the nights we spent trembling in the pantry.

Sebastian’s smile tightened at the edges. His arms hung in the empty air for two seconds before he slowly lowered them, his jaw setting hard.

When he stood back up, the warmth was completely gone.

"You've poisoned her against me," he said, taking two long strides forward until he stood less than three feet from my door. "Three years, Elena. Three years of this childish little game. I let you have your rebellion because I thought you'd come to your senses. But dragging my daughter through squalor? Living in a rat trap?"

"Get away from my door, Sebastian," I said. My voice was low, vibrating with a steady fury I hadn't known I possessed.

"Look at yourself," he sneered, looking down his nose at my worn sneakers and faded canvas jacket. "Look at this hallway. It smells like cheap grease and bleach. What do you have here? Two hundred dollars in a checking account and a waitressing job? You can't even afford proper locks."

He tapped his finger against the scratched brass deadbolt, a smirk touching his lips.

"Pack your things today," he commanded, his tone shifting into the familiar, autocratic snap of a man who bought and sold companies before lunch. "We're going home. You're bringing Maisie back to the Whitmore estate where she belongs. You've had your fun playing independent, but the charity ends now."

"We are never going back to that house," I said.

Sebastian gave a dry, humorless chuckle. He stepped into my personal space, leaning down until his mouth was inches from my ear.

"You don't have a choice," he whispered. "You have no money. No lawyers. No family with enough spine to stand against my firm. Without my name, you're nobody. You're just a broke runaway playing house in a slum."

He reached his hand out, his long fingers aiming straight for Maisie's shoulder to pull her away from me.

For years, I had shrunk from his touch. For years, I had apologized for things I didn't do, begged for his approval, and bargained for peace just to avoid the rage that followed every disagreement.

Not today.

I stepped hard to the right, cutting off his path, and struck his wrist away with the flat of my forearm.

The sharp smack echoed through the narrow hallway.

Sebastian froze. A dark, ugly shock flashed across his features.

"Don't touch her," I said.

My heart was pounding, but my feet didn't move an inch. I looked him dead in the eyes, refusing to drop my chin.

"You can hate me all you want," I said, every word crisp and cold. "You can call your lawyers. You can freeze every account you ever attached my name to. But you will never put your hands on my daughter again. If you take another step toward her, I will scream loud enough to wake every tenant in this building, and I will tell the police exactly what you did to the lock."

Sebastian stared at me, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits. The mask of the civilized billionaire had fully slipped, revealing the cruel possessiveness underneath.

He didn't yell. He didn't lose control in the hallway where neighbors might hear. He simply leaned back, straightening the lapels of his coat.

"You think you're brave, Elena," he said softly, a deadly smile curling his lips. "You think standing in front of a door makes you strong. But the law is on my side, and so is every dollar in the bank."

He checked his gold watch, then looked down at Maisie, whose small frame was still trembling against my legs.

"Tomorrow morning," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a flat, icy promise. "Eight sharp. Either Maisie comes with me peacefully, or I take her myself. And you won't even get visiting hours."

He turned on his heel and walked down the stairs, his leather soles clicking against the steps until the front lobby door slammed shut.

The moment he was gone, the hallway fell into suffocating silence.

I didn't wait. I dragged Maisie inside, slammed the heavy wooden door, and threw all three deadbolts. My hands shook so badly I fumbled the security chain twice before it locked into place.

"Mommy?" Maisie whimpered, her face streaked with tears. "Is the loud man coming back?"

"No, baby," I whispered, dropping to my knees and pulling her tight against my chest. "He's not taking you. I promise. Mommy's got you."

There was no time to cry. I pushed the kitchen table against the front door, wedging the wooden legs under the knob.

Eight o'clock tomorrow morning was a lie. Sebastian would have men watching the building before midnight. If we were going to survive, we had to disappear tonight.

I dragged two worn duffel bags from the closet and began throwing our lives into them. Winter coats. Maisie’s warm sweaters. Birth certificates. The seven hundred dollars in cash I had saved inside an old coffee tin behind the stove. Every drawer I opened was dumped, sorted, and packed within minutes.

"Mommy, what about Barnaby?" Maisie asked from the edge of her mattress.

"Put him in your backpack, sweetie," I called back, rushing into the bathroom to sweep our toothbrushes and basic medications into a plastic pouch. "We're going on a trip. Right now."

In the living room, Maisie didn't reach for the rabbit right away.

Instead, she stood quietly near the small drop-leaf table where my jacket lay draped over a chair. Her tiny fingers reached into the outer pocket, digging past the crumpled receipts until they brushed against something cold, flat, and heavy.

She pulled out the matte black metal card Dante had given her.

I came out of the bathroom with the plastic pouch just as Maisie tucked Barnaby under one arm and walked over to the kitchen counter to pick up my cell phone.

"Maisie, what are you doing?"

She tapped the screen with her thumb, opened the keypad, and carefully pressed each silver number embossed on the metal card.

Before I could reach her, she pressed the green call button and lifted the phone to her ear.

The line rang once.

It clicked open on the second ring.

A voice answered—deep, low, and completely calm, faintly audible from the receiver.

"Speak."

Maisie gripped the phone tighter, her little voice trembling into the speaker.

"Bandage Uncle?" she whispered. "Mommy's bad man found us."

I stopped cold.
