Chapter 2

The grand dining hall of the Silvermoon Pack house glittered with crystal and silver as I took my place beside Cameron at the head table. The Alpha and Luna of the Redclaw Pack sat across from us, their eyes occasionally flicking to my swollen belly with something like envy. Seven months along, our future heir was the only thing keeping me relevant in Cameron's eyes—or so I'd foolishly believed.

"The Redclaw territory expansion proposal seems reasonable," Cameron was saying, his voice carrying the easy authority that had once made my heart race. Now it just made my skin crawl.

Victoria stood behind his chair, her hand casually resting on his shoulder in a gesture that screamed possession. She wore a crimson dress that hugged every curve, while I was relegated to a shapeless gray maternity gown that made me feel invisible.

Maya stirred restlessly within me. "Something feels wrong," she whispered in our shared consciousness.

I shifted uncomfortably, feeling a strange tightening across my abdomen. The baby had been unusually still today.

"Are you well, Luna Isabella?" Alpha Redclaw's mate asked, her keen eyes missing nothing.

Before I could answer, a sharp, searing pain ripped through my lower body. I gasped, doubling over, my hands clutching my belly.

"Cameron," I choked out, panic rising as I felt wetness between my legs. I looked down in horror to see crimson spreading across the gray fabric of my dress.

The room erupted in controlled chaos. Alpha Redclaw's Luna, a former healer herself, was at my side in an instant.

"Get your pack healer," she commanded, helping me to the floor as my legs gave way.

Elara, our silver-haired healer, pushed through the gathering crowd, medical bag in hand. Her face paled when she saw the blood.

"Alpha, she needs immediate attention," Elara said, her voice urgent. "The pup—"

I reached for Cameron, terror clawing at my throat. "Please," I begged, not caring who witnessed my desperation. "Our baby—"

Cameron stood frozen, his expression unreadable. Victoria clutched her temples dramatically.

"I—I can't bear this," she moaned. "My head is splitting. Cameron, please..."

I watched in disbelief as my mate's eyes shifted from me to Victoria.

"Elara, see to Victoria first," he ordered, his tone brooking no argument. "She's been suffering migraines all week."

"But Alpha, the Luna is hemorrhaging!" Elara protested, her professional instincts warring with her obligation to obey.

"That's an order," Cameron growled, his Alpha tone making everyone in the room flinch. "Isabella will manage for a few minutes. Take Victoria to her quarters immediately."

As Elara hesitated, torn between her duty and her Alpha's command, I felt something vital slip away inside me. A keening wail built in my chest as Maya howled in primal anguish.

"My pup," I whispered, the world going gray around the edges. "You're killing our pup."

The last thing I saw before consciousness fled was Cameron leading Victoria from the hall, his arm protectively around her waist, never looking back at the mate and child he had abandoned to fate.

---

Two hours later, I lay in my cold, separate chamber, staring at the ceiling. The room still smelled of blood and antiseptic. Elara had finally come, too late to save what mattered most.

"I'm sorry, Luna," she had whispered, tears streaming down her wrinkled face as she confirmed what my body already knew. "The pup... there was nothing I could do."

But there had been. If she had come immediately. If Cameron had prioritized his heir over his mistress. If, if, if...

Maya's grief was a physical presence inside me, a wounded animal curled around the hollow space where our baby had been.

"He will pay for this," she snarled, her voice rough with pain. "They will all pay."

I heard Elara's voice in the corridor outside, speaking in hushed tones. Curiosity briefly overcame my grief, and I forced myself to stand on shaky legs, pressing my ear to the door.

"...had to attend to Beta Victoria first," Elara was saying, her voice thick with guilt. "Alpha's orders. But there was nothing wrong with her, just the usual headache excuse."

"While the Luna lost the heir," came the disgusted reply—one of the kitchen staff, by the sound of it. "The pack will suffer for this betrayal. Mark my words."

I stumbled back from the door, my grief crystallizing into something harder, colder. Maya's rage fed mine, and for once, we were in perfect harmony.

"Follow the scent," Maya urged suddenly. "There's something... strange."

I frowned, focusing my enhanced senses. Beneath the medical smells lingered something else—fresh paint and new wood. It seemed to be coming from behind the large wardrobe in the corner of my room.

Moving it took the last of my strength, but what I found made my blood freeze in my veins. A hidden door, recently installed and poorly concealed.

With trembling hands, I turned the knob and stepped into a secret nursery—not the modest one I had been preparing in the main chamber, but a lavish space filled with custom furniture in rich mahogany. A crystal mobile hung over a hand-carved crib draped in silks. Everything was new, expensive, and clearly not meant for my child.

On the changing table lay a card in Cameron's bold handwriting: "For our future pup. All my love, C."

The card was addressed to Victoria.

I sank to my knees, the final piece of the puzzle clicking into place. Victoria had never been pregnant. It had all been a lie—a cruel deception to secure her position while my genuine pregnancy was treated as an inconvenience.

As the truth washed over me, something broke inside—and something else, something dangerous, began to form in its place.

"We don't need the Blackstones anymore," Maya whispered. "We'll destroy them ourselves."

I caressed the empty crib, a cold smile forming on my lips.

"No," I replied, a plan already taking shape. "We need them more than ever. But first, we need proof."

I slipped the card into my pocket, my grief hardening into resolve. Cameron and Victoria had taken everything from me—my dignity, my position, and now my child.

I would take everything from them in return.
