Chapter 4

The aroma of roasted vegetables and seared meat filled the cabin as Elena stood at the stove, her hands working automatically. Cooking had always been her way of grounding herself, but tonight, it wasn’t helping.

Behind her, the sound of laughter rang out. Hayden and Sylvia were on the couch, chatting like old friends. Their laughter grated on Elena’s already frayed nerves. Each giggle from Sylvia felt like a slap, each low chuckle from Hayden a betrayal.

Elena tried to focus on the meal, chopping herbs with precision, but her hands trembled. She didn’t want to look at them, didn’t want to see the way Hayden smiled at Sylvia, as if Elena wasn’t standing right there.

“I’m going to wash up before dinner,” Hayden said suddenly, his voice breaking through her thoughts.

“Take your time,” Sylvia replied sweetly.

Elena glanced over her shoulder to see Hayden heading upstairs. Sylvia waited a beat, then rose gracefully from the couch and sauntered into the kitchen.

“Smells delicious,” Sylvia said, her voice honeyed. She leaned against the counter, watching Elena with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

Elena ignored her, focusing on the food.

“You’re so domestic,” Sylvia continued, her tone light but laced with something sharper. “It’s admirable, really. Doing everything you can to keep him happy.”

Elena tightened her grip on the spoon she was stirring with but said nothing.

Sylvia leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Though I suppose it must be hard… after everything you’ve lost.”

Elena froze, her heart pounding.

Sylvia’s smile widened, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. “Such a shame about the pup. A tragedy, really.”

Elena turned slowly to face her, her voice low and dangerous. “What are you saying?”

How did she know she was with child? She didn’t even tell Hayden. She had kept her pregnancy result papers in her drawer in the bedroom she shared with Hayden. Unless… she had been in her room. Hayden had taken her to their bedroom.

Sylvia tilted her head, her expression feigned innocence. “Oh, nothing. Just that these things don’t happen by accident. Sometimes… they’re arranged.”

The words hit Elena like a thunderclap. Her vision blurred with rage as the realization settled in. Sylvia knew. Worse, Sylvia had been involved.

Before she could stop herself, Elena’s hand flew out, striking Sylvia across the face with a sharp crack. Sylvia stumbled back, her hand flying to her cheek, her eyes wide with shock—and triumph.

“Elena!” Hayden’s voice boomed from the staircase.

Elena whirled to see him rushing down, his face a mask of anger. Sylvia immediately burst into tears, clutching her cheek as if she’d been mortally wounded.

“She hit me,” Sylvia sobbed, her voice trembling. “I was just trying to be kind, and she—”

“What is wrong with you?” Hayden snapped, glaring at Elena. His tone was filled with disbelief and fury.

Elena’s chest heaved as she tried to find the words, tried to explain, but all she could see was Sylvia’s smug expression behind the veil of tears.

“She provoked me,” Elena said, her voice shaking. “She—”

“I don’t want to hear it,” Hayden cut her off. “You had no right to put your hands on her.”

Elena stared at him, her heart breaking. Couldn’t he see? Didn’t he understand?

“Come on, Sylvia,” Hayden said, his tone softer now as he turned to the other woman. “Let’s get you out of here.”

Sylvia sniffled, shooting Elena one last triumphant glance before letting Hayden lead her to the door.

Elena stood frozen, her hands trembling at her sides as she watched them leave. The door closed behind them with a sharp click, and the silence that followed was deafening.

She felt the heaviness of it all settle on her chest. The grief, the anger, the betrayal—it all crushed her at once. And then, like a final blow, she felt it.

The bond.

It was gone.

The connection that had once tied her to Hayden, the thread that had made her feel whole even in the darkest moments, had snapped.

Elena sank to her knees, the knife she’d been holding clattering to the floor. She pressed her hands to her chest, but it didn’t stop the hollow ache spreading through her.

He had chosen Sylvia. Not in words, but in action.

And in that moment, Elena realized she was alone. Truly, utterly alone.

The morning was cold and overcast as Elena sat at her desk, pen in hand, staring down at the resignation letter she had been working on for the past hour. The words felt heavier with each revision. Her heart ached, but her resolve didn’t waver. This was the first step toward reclaiming her life.

The cabin’s study, with its high wooden shelves and worn leather chairs, had always been Hayden’s domain. She had rarely ventured in, knowing how protective he was of his space. But today, she didn’t care. This was about her future, not his.

Her fingers trembled as she signed her name at the bottom of the letter. There it was—final and irrevocable. She folded the paper neatly, sliding it into an envelope. Hayden might hesitate, but he couldn’t stop her. Not this time.

Later that day, Elena found Hayden in the workshop near the edge of the clearing. He was working on something with quiet intensity, his hands steady as he tightened bolts on a piece of equipment she couldn’t recognize. He didn’t look up when she entered.

“I need to talk to you,” Elena said, her voice steady despite the tightness in her chest.

Hayden glanced up briefly, his golden eyes sharp but distant. “What is it?”

Elena stepped forward, holding out the envelope. “I’m resigning from my role in the pack’s operations.”

Hayden stared at her, his jaw tightening.

“You’re just going to walk away?”
