Chapter 2

The air inside the cabin was stifling, suffused with an awkward silence that stretched like a taut rope between them. Elena sat at the kitchen table, her hands wrapped around a mug of cooling tea. Across from her, Hayden ate in silence, his gaze fixed on his plate. His movements were precise, almost mechanical, as though he were completing an obligation rather than sharing a meal with his mate.

Elena tried to push through the silence. “Do you want me to go to the market later? We’re low on supplies.”

Hayden didn’t look up. “I’ll handle it,” he replied, his tone clipped.

Elena bit the inside of her cheek. The conversations between them had grown shorter, emptier. She couldn’t remember the last time Hayden had looked at her with warmth—or even looked at her at all.

She watched him for a moment longer, trying to find a trace of the man she had once loved. But his face was as impassive as always, his sharp jawline and striking golden eyes betraying nothing. The mate bond between them, which had once been a source of strength and connection, now felt like a chain binding her to someone who no longer cared.

Her gaze drifted to the untouched chair beside him, and her stomach twisted. The chair was frequently occupied these days—just not by her.

Later that afternoon, Elena stood by the kitchen window, wiping her hands on a towel as she watched Hayden stride across the clearing. A familiar figure fell into step beside him, her silvery hair catching the sunlight. Slyvia Dawn.

Elena’s grip on the towel tightened. She had seen the way Slyvia laughed at Hayden’s dry remarks, the way she lingered too close to him, brushing his arm casually. And she had seen how Hayden didn’t pull away. He didn’t laugh, but he didn’t stop her, either.

Once, Elena had tried to address it. She had asked him outright why Slyvia seemed to be everywhere he was, why she shared their meals more often than not. Hayden had dismissed her concerns without a second thought. “Slyvia’s a friend,” he had said, his tone impatient. “You’re imagining things.”

But she wasn’t imagining the lingering touches, the stolen glances, or the late-night conversations they thought she didn’t notice. Elena knew what she saw, even if Hayden refused to acknowledge it.

She turned away from the window, the knot in her chest tightening. If this was what their bond had become, she didn’t want it anymore.

That evening, dinner was another strained affair. Slyvia sat in her usual place beside Hayden, her laughter ringing through the cabin as she recounted a story about a recent hunt. Hayden nodded along, the faintest hint of a smirk tugging at his lips.

Elena sat across from them, silently picking at her food. The two of them seemed so at ease with one another, their shared energy leaving her feeling like an intruder in her own home.

“So, Hayden,” Slyvia said, her voice carrying a flirtatious lilt, “are we still on for tomorrow? I could use a strong partner out there.”

“Yeah,” Hayden replied, his tone casual. “I’ll meet you at dawn.”

Elena’s fork clattered against her plate, drawing both of their gazes. She forced a tight smile. “Excuse me,” she murmured, rising from the table.

Neither of them tried to stop her.

In the quiet of her bedroom, Elena sank onto the edge of the bed, her hands trembling. This wasn’t the life she had imagined when she had left everything behind to be with Hayden. She had believed in the strength of their bond, the promise of a future filled with love and family. But now, all she felt was emptiness.

Her gaze landed on the small trunk at the foot of the bed. Inside were the few remnants of her past life—letters from her father, a faded photograph of her family’s estate in Silverthorn, and an old ledger from the Rivers family business.

The Rivers family had once been everything to her. She had grown up surrounded by the hum of industry, the scent of ink and paper, and the steady rhythm of her father’s voice as he managed the company. She had been his pride and joy, the heir to the Rivers legacy. But all of that had ended when she had chosen Hayden.

Her father had warned her. “You’ll regret this,” he had said, his voice heavy with disappointment. At the time, she had dismissed his words, confident that her love for Hayden would be enough to sustain her.

Now, the truth slapped her in the face harder than she could bare.

The next morning, while Hayden was out with Slyvia, Elena began making preparations. She pulled the trunk out from beneath the bed, sorting through its contents. The old ledger was still intact, the ink slightly faded but legible. She ran her fingers over the pages, a rush of nostalgia flooding her.

Silverthorn had always been more than just a business. It was her home, her identity. And she wanted it back.

Elena set to work, writing letters to her father and her brother. She explained her situation as best she could, though she left out the grittier details of Hayden’s betrayal. Instead, she focused on her desire to return, to contribute to the family business once more.

The act of writing gave her a sense of purpose, a glimpse of the independence she had lost. For the first time in months, she felt a flicker of hope.

Days turned into weeks, and Hayden’s behavior remained unchanged. He continued to spend his time with Slyvia, his presence in the cabin more of an afterthought than a comfort. Elena kept her plans to herself, biding her time as she waited for a response from her family.

One afternoon, while Hayden was away, a courier arrived at the cabin. Elena’s heart raced as she accepted the envelope, her fingers trembling as she broke the seal.

Her father’s handwriting was as neat and precise as she remembered. The letter was brief but filled with warmth. He welcomed her back to Silverthorn with open arms, expressing his regret for how they had parted ways. Her brother had also written a note, offering to help her reintegrate into the business.

Elena pressed the letter to her chest, tears welling in her eyes. She hadn’t realized how much she had missed them—her family, her home—until now.

That evening, as Hayden sat across from her at the dinner table, Elena felt a strange sense of calm. She no longer needed his approval, his attention, or even his love. Her path was clear, and it no longer revolved around him.

She caught his gaze briefly, her expression unreadable. Hayden didn’t seem to notice the change in her demeanor. Or, if he did, he didn’t care.

Elena took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead. Soon, she would leave this place behind—the suffocating silence, the constant show of his indifference—and reclaim the life she had once abandoned.

She couldn’t continue this matebond anymore.
