Chapter 3

The night air carried a chill that seemed to seep into my bones as I nestled deeper into my sleeping bag. The wilderness segment of the competition had most contestants huddled in small groups for warmth and security, but I had chosen to set up my modest camp at the edge of the clearing, away from prying eyes and whispered judgments.

Celeste slept peacefully beside me, her small body curled against mine, her midnight hair spilling across the pillow. I watched her chest rise and fall with each breath, finding comfort in her innocence amid this den of wolves.

The first intrusion came like a whisper—a gentle pressure against my consciousness that quickly transformed into something more insistent. I recognized it immediately: a mind-link attempt. Chase's mental signature was unmistakable, carrying the same possessive energy that had once suffocated me.

*Evangeline*, his voice slithered into my thoughts. *We need to talk. You can't keep running from what we had.*

Selene roared to life within me, silver fur bristling along my mental landscape. *How dare he?* she snarled, rising to the surface of my consciousness with protective fury.

I closed my eyes, allowing my wolf to take control of our mental defenses. The bond Chase was attempting to reopen had been severed years ago—painfully, completely—when Alexander and I had formed our true mate bond. What Chase was trying now was nothing short of a violation.

*Get. Out.* Selene's voice merged with mine, our combined power surging outward like a tidal wave.

The effect was instantaneous. The unwelcome presence shattered against our mental shields, and across the clearing, I heard a pained gasp. Opening my eyes, I saw Chase staggering backward, clutching his head. His Beta, Marcus Thorne, rushed to steady him, concern etched across his weathered face.

"Alpha?" Marcus's voice carried in the still night air. "What happened?"

Chase's eyes found mine across the distance, confusion and rage warring in their amber depths. "Impossible," he muttered, loud enough for my enhanced hearing to catch. "She shouldn't be able to..." His voice trailed off as Marcus guided him back toward their tent, casting one last troubled glance in my direction.

Selene settled back within me, satisfied with our defense but still alert. *He doesn't understand what he's dealing with*, she purred. *None of them do.*

I stroked Celeste's hair gently, careful not to wake her. "Soon," I whispered to the night. "Soon they'll all know."

---

The competition convoy arrived at the Moonstone Territory the following afternoon. As our vehicles passed through the massive silver gates, I felt a weight lift from my shoulders. This was Alexander's domain—the seat of Lycan power and my true home for the past three years.

"Mama, look!" Celeste pressed her face against the window, pointing excitedly at the gleaming spires of the royal palace visible in the distance. "That's where—"

"Remember our secret, little moon," I reminded her gently, touching a finger to my lips. The driver couldn't hear us behind the privacy partition, but I couldn't risk Celeste revealing too much too soon.

She nodded solemnly, but her eyes danced with excitement. "I miss Papa," she whispered.

"I know," I replied softly. "Not much longer now."

As our vehicle pulled up to the main reception area, I saw Victoria preening for the cameras, Chase at her side. She was gesturing grandly, clearly explaining to viewers how she would be treated like royalty during this segment. The thought almost made me smile.

When my door opened, I wasn't greeted by the regular production assistants but by Kaelen, the head guard of the Moonstone Territory. His imposing figure, dressed in the formal black and silver uniform of the royal guard, caused an immediate hush to fall over the gathered contestants.

Kaelen bowed deeply—far deeper than protocol required for a regular Alpha's mate. "Your royal suite awaits, Luna Evangeline," he announced, his voice carrying clearly across the courtyard. "The King has made arrangements for your comfort and that of the young princess."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Victoria's mouth fell open, her carefully applied lipstick suddenly garish against her pale skin. Chase stood frozen, his eyes narrowing as he processed Kaelen's words and formal address.

Four additional royal guards materialized, forming a protective escort around Celeste and me. As we were guided toward the private royal entrance—a route familiar to me but forbidden to regular visitors—I could feel the weight of every stare, the burn of jealousy and confusion.

"Wait!" Victoria's voice cut through the murmurs. She strode forward, cameras trailing her. "This is clearly preferential treatment! As the host and Luna of Silvercrest Pack, I demand equal accommodations!"

Kaelen turned to her, his expression perfectly polite yet utterly unyielding. "I apologize for any confusion, Ms. Kane. Royal protocol reserves these particular accommodations for..." He paused, his eyes flicking briefly to me, "...specific guests. Alternative luxury suites have been prepared for all other contestants, including yourself and Alpha Blackwood."

The cameras caught it all—Victoria's forced smile cracking at the edges, the confusion rippling through the crowd, and the subtle shift in how the other contestants looked at me. No longer with contempt, but with uncertainty and growing curiosity.

As we passed through the ornate double doors that led to the royal wing, I caught a glimpse of Marcus Thorne watching me with newfound wariness. The Beta's eyes held a dawning realization that his Alpha had severely underestimated what—and who—he was dealing with.

Celeste squeezed my hand, her golden eyes bright with excitement. "Are we going to see Papa now?" she whispered.

"Not yet, little moon," I replied softly. "But soon everyone will know exactly who we are."
