Chapter 2

I sat alone in the guest room—my room for years now—listening to the sounds of celebration drifting through the walls. The mattress beneath me felt cold and unforgiving, much like the pack house that had been my home for thirty years.

My fingers trembled as I traced the wine stain on my white dress, now dried to a rusty brown. The pearl earrings Reed had given me five anniversaries ago felt heavy against my neck, like anchors dragging me down into depths I could no longer bear.

"Thirty years," I whispered to the empty room. "Thirty years of service. Thirty years of sacrifice."

Through the walls, I could hear them—Reed and Selena—in what had once been our bedroom. Their laughter cut through me like glass.

"I've always belonged here," Selena's voice drifted through the door, smug and triumphant. "Always."

I pressed my palms against my ears, but it did nothing to block out Reed's response, his voice low and intimate in a way it hadn't been with me in decades.

"Tonight makes it official, my chosen one."

My chosen one. Not his fated mate. Not his Luna.

Me.

I moved to the small desk by the window and pulled out a piece of paper, my hands steadier now. The moonlight illuminated my reflection in the window—a woman I barely recognized, with tired eyes and a spine that had bent too long.

"No more," I said aloud, my voice stronger than it had been in years.

I began to write, the words flowing from some deep well of resolve I hadn't known existed within me:

"I, Cali Kennedy, Luna of the Silvermoon Pack, hereby declare my intention to reject the mate bond with Alpha Reed Foster."

The pen trembled in my hand as I signed my name, but my resolve didn't waver. Thirty years of devotion had earned me nothing but contempt. Thirty years of service had left me invisible in my own home.

I folded the paper carefully and placed it in my pocket. Tomorrow would change everything.

---

The pack meeting hall fell silent as I walked in, my head held high despite the whispers that followed me like shadows. Reed sat at the head of the long table, Selena perched smugly at his right hand—my place.

"Luna Cali," Reed acknowledged me with a curt nod. "We weren't expecting you this morning."

"I have an announcement to make," I said, my voice surprisingly steady as I pulled out the folded paper from my pocket.

Before he could object, I unfolded it and began to read.

"I, Cali Kennedy, Luna of the Silvermoon Pack, hereby declare my intention to reject the mate bond with Alpha Reed Foster."

Gasps rippled through the assembled pack members. Reed's face darkened with fury, his Alpha aura flaring dangerously.

"This is absurd," he snapped, rising to his feet. "You cannot reject a mate bond ordained by the Moon Goddess herself."

Selena's smirk faltered as realization dawned on her face. If I rejected Reed as my mate, she could never officially take my place as Luna.

"The rejection ceremony will take place at the next full moon," I continued, ignoring Reed's protests. "I have served this pack faithfully for thirty years. I will continue to do so until the bond is formally severed."

"Mother." Jalen's voice cut through the chaos, his tone a mixture of embarrassment and anger. "Stop this nonsense immediately."

But I stood firm, meeting each pair of eyes around the table. Some looked shocked, others curious, a few even sympathetic.

"The decision is made," I said simply.

---

"This is preposterous!" Elder Foster's voice thundered through the family meeting room later that afternoon. "A mate bond rejection? Do you have any idea what this will do to our pack?"

Luna Margaret paced behind him, her eyes cold as she assessed me.

"Cali," she said, her voice dripping with false concern. "Surely you can see that Selena is better suited to be Luna. She has the Alpha bloodline, the proper bearing, the strength our pack needs."

"Strength comes in many forms," I replied quietly.

"Don't be ridiculous," Margaret continued, ticking off points on her manicured fingers. "Selena understands pack politics. She knows how to command respect. She's been preparing for this role her entire life."

"Unlike you," she added with a dismissive wave. "Playing at being Luna while undermining Reed at every turn."

Elder Foster stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder. "The pack will be unstable. Other Alphas will see this as weakness. Think about what you're doing to your family, Cali."

I looked up at him, at the man who had never truly accepted me as his daughter-in-law, and felt something inside me harden.

"My decision stands," I said softly.

As they continued their barrage of reasons why I should reconsider, I touched the paper in my pocket—my declaration of independence. For the first time in thirty years, I was choosing myself.

And nothing they could say would change that.
