Chapter 2

The sleepless night stretched endlessly before me as I lay rigid beside Nicholas, every fiber of my being alert to the foreign scents that seemed to mock me from the very walls of our bedroom. Luna paced restlessly within me, her agitation making my skin feel too tight, too confining. When dawn finally broke through our curtains, I knew I couldn't pretend anymore.

Nicholas left early for what he claimed was a border patrol, his kiss on my forehead feeling like a brand of betrayal. The moment his truck disappeared down the forest path, I began my hunt.

I started in our bedroom, dropping to my hands and knees like the wolf I was beneath my human skin. The foreign scent was layered here in ways that made my stomach churn—recent and old, marking a pattern of repeated visits. My enhanced senses picked up traces on Nicholas's pillow, his side of the closet, even on the handle of our bathroom door. This wasn't casual contact. This was intimate, deliberate, ongoing.

Luna's growl rumbled through my chest as I followed the scent trail downstairs. It led to Nicholas's study, where pack business was supposed to be conducted with dignity and honor. But the alien pheromones clung to his desk chair, the leather couch where visiting Alphas were meant to negotiate territory disputes. The violation felt deeper than physical—it was spiritual, a desecration of everything our pack represented.

I pushed through the back door and into our territory proper, my wolf senses guiding me along paths I'd walked for eleven years but had never truly seen. The trail led away from the main pack areas, toward the secluded training grounds where Nicholas claimed to conduct his most sensitive alliance negotiations.

The morning mist clung to the forest floor as I tracked the intertwined scents deeper into our woods. Every step confirmed what my heart refused to accept—this wasn't random. The pattern was too consistent, too intimate. Someone had been using our sacred spaces for purposes that made Luna snarl with territorial fury.

As I crested a small hill overlooking the eastern training grounds, the sound of voices made me freeze. Through the trees below, I could see figures moving in the clearing—Nicholas's distinctive silhouette and another, smaller form that moved with predatory grace.

I crept closer, using every stealth technique I'd learned in my Luna training. My wolf's natural camouflage abilities kicked in, allowing me to approach unseen until I had a clear view of the clearing.

What I saw shattered something fundamental inside me.

Nicholas stood with Amara Cook, a mid-ranking pack member I'd known for years but never paid particular attention to. But the way they stood together now—his hand resting possessively on her lower back, her fingers tracing patterns on his chest—spoke of an intimacy that should have been mine alone.

"The alliance meetings are getting more frequent," Amara was saying, her voice carrying easily in the still morning air. "She's going to start asking questions."

"Let her ask." Nicholas's voice held a casual dismissal that cut through me like silver. "Lydia's too trusting to see what's right in front of her. She always has been."

Amara laughed, a sound like breaking glass. "Your devoted little Luna. Does she still bring you those midnight snacks during your 'late night patrols'?"

"She does." Nicholas's smile was cruel in a way I'd never seen before. "Makes it convenient, actually. I can see you, then go home to her grateful little gestures. She never suspects a thing."

The casual cruelty of his words hit me like a physical blow. Those midnight snacks—warm cookies and coffee I'd prepared with love during his supposed pack duties—had been nothing more than convenient alibis for his betrayal.

Amara pressed closer to him, her scent marking him in ways that made Luna howl with rage inside my chest. "I left something special for her to find," she purred. "My scent all over your precious bedroom. Let's see how long it takes your brilliant Luna to figure it out."

"You're playing with fire," Nicholas warned, but his tone held amusement rather than concern. "If she discovers us—"

"She won't." Amara's confidence was absolute. "She's too weak, too dependent on your approval to challenge you directly. That's what makes her such a perfect Luna—and such a perfect fool."

They moved together then, Nicholas's mouth claiming Amara's in a kiss that should have been sacred, should have been mine. The mate bond that had sustained me for eleven years twisted in my chest, no longer a source of strength but a chain of agony.

I backed away slowly, my enhanced hearing catching every whispered endearment, every casual dismissal of our marriage, our bond, our life together. By the time I reached the safety of the deeper woods, Luna was howling inside me—a sound of such pure anguish that I had to clamp my hands over my mouth to keep it from escaping.

The hunt for truth was over. Now came the hunt for justice.
