Chapter 3

Consciousness returned in fragments—the antiseptic smell of the pack hospital, the steady beep of monitoring equipment, and a deep, hollow ache that seemed to emanate from my very soul. I tried to sit up, but gentle hands pressed me back against the pillows.

"Easy, Luna," a familiar voice murmured. "You need to stay still."

I blinked, focusing on the kind face of Healer Diana Moon. Her silver hair was pulled back in its usual bun, but worry lines creased her forehead as she checked the IV drip connected to my arm. The formal address she'd used registered slowly—Luna. She'd never called me that before.

"What happened?" My voice came out as a rasp, my throat raw from screaming I couldn't remember.

"Marcus brought you in three hours ago," Diana said softly, her healer's training keeping her voice steady despite the concern in her eyes. "You were bleeding heavily, unconscious. The trauma to your body was... extensive."

Memories crashed back—Luke's hands around my throat, his knee in my stomach, the sickening crack of ribs. But there was something else, something that made Luna whimper weakly in the back of my mind.

"Serenity," Diana's voice grew gentler, more careful. "You were pregnant. About six weeks along."

The words hit me like a physical blow. Pregnant. I pressed my hand to my stomach, feeling the bandages beneath the hospital gown, and knew with devastating certainty what she was about to tell me.

"The trauma from the mate bond violation, combined with the physical assault..." Diana's professional composure cracked slightly. "You're experiencing a severe miscarriage. The magical healing intervention I need to perform might save your life, but the pregnancy... I'm sorry, Luna. The damage is too extensive."

A sob tore from my throat. Six weeks. I'd been carrying Luke's pup for six weeks without knowing, and in one night of violence, he'd destroyed everything—our bond, our future, our child. The mate bond felt like acid in my veins, each of Luke's heartbeats a reminder of what he'd stolen from us both.

"The healing ritual requires significant magical energy and rare herbs," Diana continued, her healer's instincts taking over. "I need your mate's authorization for the expense, and we need to begin immediately if we're going to save—"

"Authorization denied."

Luke's voice cut through the room like a blade. I turned my head to see him standing in the doorway, his clothes still rumpled from our earlier confrontation, Camilla's vanilla scent still clinging to him like a second skin. His eyes were cold, distant, as if he were looking at a stranger rather than the mate who carried his dying child.

"Luke," I whispered, hope flickering despite everything. "Please. The baby—"

"There is no baby," he said flatly. "And I'm not wasting pack resources on expensive healing rituals for someone who clearly brought this on herself."

Diana's intake of breath was sharp, scandalized. "Beta Hudson, your mate is dying. The magical intervention is the only thing that can—"

"My mate?" Luke laughed harshly. "I think you're confused, Healer. My chosen mate is Camilla Berry, and she's the one who needs medical attention."

As if summoned by her name, Camilla appeared beside him, cradling her left arm dramatically. Three shallow scratches marked her forearm—barely more than paper cuts—but she winced as if they were mortal wounds.

"These injuries are quite severe," she said in her practiced sweet voice, though I caught the satisfied gleam in her eyes as she took in my broken form. "I'm afraid I might need stitches, possibly magical healing to prevent scarring."

My mother's moonstone pendant caught the harsh hospital lights as it swayed against Camilla's chest, and something deep inside me began to crack. Not break—crack. Like ice under pressure, holding for now but promising devastating collapse.

"Redirect all medical resources to Camilla," Luke ordered, his Beta authority ringing through the room. "She's my priority now."

Diana's face went white with shock. "Beta Hudson, I cannot in good conscience—"

"That's an order, Healer." Luke's voice carried the unmistakable weight of command. "Treat my chosen mate first. Everything else can wait."

I watched through blurring vision as Diana reluctantly began gathering supplies for Camilla's minor wounds, leaving me bleeding and broken on the hospital bed. The mate bond, already fractured beyond repair, began its final death throes as Luke chose another woman's scratches over his dying mate and unborn child.

In the adjacent room, I could hear Camilla's theatrical moans of pain as Diana tended to her superficial wounds, while Luke's voice murmured comfort and concern. The same voice that had once promised to love and protect me now lavished attention on my replacement while I lost our pup alone.

Luna's anguished howl echoed through my mind as the last hope died, and with it, something fundamental shifted inside me. The Luna bloodline that I'd suppressed for seven years began to stir, awakened not by love, but by the complete destruction of everything I'd sacrificed my birthright to protect.
