Loving a Liar

The security guards at the Sterlings estate threw me out. Two hours later, I finally received a message from Corey.

[Jennie just got out. Her emotions are still unstable, so don't blame her. Making you apologize today was just a show for the Sterlings. I'll handle everything and come home tonight to make it up to you, okay? I told you I'd prepare a gift for you—don't stay mad, alright?]

I knew the show wasn't for the Sterlings at all; it was for me. Corey had been putting on this act of affection for three years. Now, it was time to end it.

I waited at home with the divorce agreement until the early hours, but he never came. Instead, the internet exploded with the news: The president of Gail Corporation caused a stir at the hospital, all for the sake of beauty.

Jennie had barely suffered a scratch, yet Corey assembled an entire team of top specialists to examine her, sparing no expense—over a million dollars. The photos showed him cradling Jennie in his arms, his gaze filled with tenderness and love. A look I had never seen directed at me.

When dawn broke, I called him. He didn't even greet me—he was busy instructing his secretary.

"Mr. Gail, are you sure about transferring the overseas hotel to Mrs. Steinfeld? Our company would lose over a billion dollars. You should reconsider, sir."

"No need. Do as I said. It's the compensation I promised her. On top of that, draft another contract to transfer half of the company's shares to Jennie."

Only then did Corey notice my call and answer, "Winona? Sorry for making you wait. I'm coming home soon. Did you need something?"

I looked down at the divorce agreement in my hand. "No, nothing. You're busy. I won't bother you."

"Alright, be a good girl and wait for me at home. I'll be back soon."

I didn't want to wait any longer. So, I signed the divorce papers, packed my bags and left.

At the police station, I asked for a copy of a particular document—one I had long suspected existed. After making a photocopy, I mailed it to Corey. By my calculations, he'd receive it just as my plane took off.

I didn't go home for a day and a night. Neither did he. When my phone's timer hit zero, signaling it was time for my flight, he finally sent me a message.

[Winona, I had my assistant deliver the gift to the house. Why aren't you opening the door? Still upset? Stop pouting. Be good. I'll be home soon.]

Nevertheless, Jennie's latest post showed her still at the hospital. The photo revealed Corey gently feeding her a soup. I didn't reply. When I received confirmation that my identification documents had been successfully canceled, I deleted every trace of him from my life.

Corey's secretary burst into the hospital, clutching the photocopy Winona had sent. His face was pale. "Mr. Gail! It's bad news! Madam found the falsified document from three years ago! I've been trying to reach her, but she won't pick up!"
