Chapter 1

As soon as I got my first internship paycheck, I made a beeline for the supermarket to grab a durian.

At the checkout, the durian rang up at 130 dollars. My boyfriend glanced at the price and went livid.

Right there in front of everyone, he blew up at me, "Dropping cash on a durian this pricey? Damn it. You're burning money!"

With that, he stormed off and left me to handle the bill.

I glanced at the shopping cart. Most of what we had was his stuff.

The next day, he brought over some homemade ravioli, stuffed with minced shrimp.

Problem was, he knew I was allergic to seafood.

***

I had been craving for durian for days.

Anyway, I'd blown through the ten grand my mom sent for the month's expenses, especially after dropping a three-month deposit on my new apartment.

But I didn't want to hit up my family for more cash.

By scrimping and saving, I finally made it to payday, though it was just $4,000. Now, I could treat myself to that durian I'd been obsessing over.

After work, I dragged my boyfriend Jayden Baker to the supermarket.

"What do you think about this one? Looks like it's packed with flesh," I said, wedging myself through the crowd and picking the smallest durian after a long search.

I thought this little one wouldn't be too expensive, just enough to scratch my durian itch.

Jayden didn't seem to care much, just glanced at it and grunted.

I took that as a yes and handed it to the clerk for weighing. She expertly placed it on the scale and said, "130 dollars. Want me to crack it open for you, Miss?"

Just as I was about to agree, Jayden blew up.

"What? 130 dollars for this little thing? That's highway robbery!" he blurted out.

Auntie became a little annoyed. "Young man, watch your words. It's not like I'm pocketing the money."

Everyone nearby turned to stare, throwing us looks of contempt.

Feeling my cheeks burning, I pulled on Jayden's sleeve, "This kind of durian costs more. I've got it covered, I'll pay myself."

That just pissed him off more. "Shouldn't you be saving your money for our food? Let's just get some other, cheaper fruit."

He grabbed a box of watermelons on sale. "See? This is fruit too, only 10 dollars. Put the durian back."

I shook my head. I'd been craving this for too long.

There was no way I was putting back the durian I had taken so long to pick out, especially when I could afford it.

"But I really want the durian. Just this once, please?" I begged.

Jayden pulled his hand away and said coldly, "Then you pay. I'm out."

He walked off, leaving me with a cart full of unpaid items.

The cart was crammed with his stuff: men's face wash, body wash, shampoo, and other personal care convenience items, and instant food.

The only thing I wanted was the durian in my hand.
