Love Is Wrong, Only Letting Go Is Right Novel Cover

Love Is Wrong, Only Letting Go Is Right

For five painful years of marriage, Dante sought forgiveness from his true love immediately after sharing intimacy with me. I quietly endured his betrayal until a family gathering changed everything. To prove his devotion to his mistress, Dante publicly forced me to swallow a contraceptive pill. This humiliation pushed me to my breaking point, and I finally demanded a divorce. Though my furious mother-in-law slapped him and ordered us to conceive a child, I swore he would never touch me again.

Chapter 5

After a week apart, he still looked as tall and striking as ever, laughing and chatting with the younger women who worked the front offices of the Luciano family's shipping warehouse on the waterfront.

The space doubled as a legitimate import office during business hours, staffed with associates who answered phones and filed invoices that would survive a federal audit. But the back corridors led to rooms where no auditor would ever be invited, and every woman working the front desk understood that the man leaning against the oak reception counter with his easy grin was not merely an executive. He was the heir. The future of the name on the building.

He looked good. He always looked good. The charcoal suit sat perfectly across his shoulders, the signet ring catching light whenever he gestured. A week since the severance had been finalized, and nothing about Dante Luciano's surface had changed. He was still broad-shouldered, still magnetic, still the kind of man who drew laughter from a room just by walking into it.

But the moment he saw me, his face turned cold, just as always.

"Bianca. How much did my father give you?"

I ignored him and walked toward the door.

The front office was quiet enough that my heels on the polished concrete sounded deliberate, unhurried. I didn't look back. I didn't owe him an audience anymore. The severance papers had been filed. The church-mediated settlement had been declined. Whatever remained between us was silence and distance, and I intended to keep widening it.

That move clearly stung him. He caught up in three long strides and stepped in front of me, blocking my path to the exit. His hand didn't touch me, but his body filled the doorframe the way Luciano men were taught to fill doorframes, as though the air itself should rearrange around them. His tone was hostile, clipped, stripped of the easy charm he'd been spending on the front-desk girls moments before.

"So, who was it that put on a 'holier-than-thou' act, swearing you wouldn't take a penny from the Luciano Family?"

He sneered, and the sound had teeth. "Turns out your target was my father all along. Reeling the Don in for the big catch, are we?"

I looked at this man I had loved for fifteen years. His jaw was set, his dark eyes flat and superior, and behind the contempt sat something I had once mistaken for complexity. I could feel the old ache trying to surface, the phantom weight of the wedding bracelet that used to circle my left wrist. My thumb brushed the bare skin there, a reflex, and then went still.

"Even if you're kicking a dog," I said quietly, "there's no need to humiliate it this badly."

Dante's expression shifted. The sneer faltered, and something uncomfortable flickered behind his eyes, there and gone before he could examine it. He stepped back half a pace and rubbed the edge of his signet ring with his thumb, a quick, unconscious gesture, then forced his voice flat. "Fine. Just as long as that's the case."

Just then, his secretary approached from the corridor that connected the front office to the inner rooms, a leather folio in her hands. She held out an arrangement contract for him to sign, the kind of deal that moved money between shell companies and allied fronts. I could see the letterhead from where I stood. Years of managing clean books and front operations for the Luciano household told me immediately that this was a deal that would cost him, not benefit him. The margins were wrong. The percentages were structured to bleed, not build.

But when I saw that Viviana Conti was listed as the beneficiary, her name printed in neat serif type on the distribution line, I couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh.

"For the sake of a woman's smile, you're willing to disregard the Family's interests?" My voice was steadier than I expected. "Imagine how heartbroken your father would be if he knew."

"You don't need to worry about that."

Dante's gaze was like a knife laced with poison, sinking deep into my chest. He didn't blink. The ring-rubbing had stopped.

"We're severed now, so stop trying to get close by bringing up my father every time."

He took a step toward me, and the room seemed to contract. The secretary kept her eyes on the floor. One of the soldiers posted near the front entrance shifted his weight but didn't turn.

"Viviana is my future wife. There's no need to talk about giving her a discount. If she wanted my entire fortune, every skim right, every shell stake, every safehouse deed, I'd give it to her without a second thought. Handing it over with both hands, no questions asked."

After he finished speaking, he signed his name on the paper with a heavy, deliberate stroke and then transferred three million in laundered cash to Viviana's account right in front of me. The secretary produced a phone screen showing the confirmation. He held it up just long enough for me to see.

Before leaving, he threw in one last remark, tossed over his shoulder like something he didn't even value enough to deliver to my face.

"Love always feels like a debt. You wouldn't understand."
