Love Is Wrong, Only Letting Go Is Right Novel Cover

Love Is Wrong, Only Letting Go Is Right

For five painful years of marriage, Dante sought forgiveness from his true love immediately after sharing intimacy with me. I quietly endured his betrayal until a family gathering changed everything. To prove his devotion to his mistress, Dante publicly forced me to swallow a contraceptive pill. This humiliation pushed me to my breaking point, and I finally demanded a divorce. Though my furious mother-in-law slapped him and ordered us to conceive a child, I swore he would never touch me again.

Chapter 2

"What scheme are you playing at now?"

Dante's grip tightened on the severance papers. The heavy pages bent under his fingers, and I watched the tendons in his hand shift beneath skin still damp from the shower. His thumb found the signet ring again, turning it, turning it.

"I only brought Viviana back to visit Nonna and you just had to stir up trouble in front of everyone to make my mother lose her temper. Just how badly do you want to bear my child?"

The accusation landed like a slap. He was convinced that my call for severance was a ruse, that my real goal was to secure my place in the bloodline, to anchor myself to the Luciano name through a child he would never willingly give me. And so he refused to sign.

I stood in that bedroom, in the house that had never been mine despite five years of sleeping under its roof, and I understood with a clarity that felt like ice water in my chest: he would not believe I wanted to leave because he could not imagine a world in which I had the courage to do it.

The next morning, Dante posted on social media. A photograph of himself and Viviana tangled together on a hotel loveseat, the kind of image that would have been scrubbed within minutes if Don Luciano's people had seen it first. But Dante had posted it deliberately, recklessly, with the confidence of an heir who believed his name was armor enough.

Clear as day, I saw the faint rows of bite marks along his neck and the scattered bruises on Viviana's smooth thigh.

They were trophies from a night of passion.

I was still staring, stunned, the screen burning white in my hand, when my phone rang.

On the other end of the line, Dante spoke with smug satisfaction. The background noise suggested a restaurant, somewhere expensive, the murmur of waitstaff and the soft percussion of silverware on porcelain. He was having brunch. He was celebrating.

"Just as you wished, Viviana and I didn't use any protection this time. I promise the Luciano family heir will arrive next year, just not from you."

The line went dead. I sat on the edge of my bed in the small room I had been given after leaving the master suite, a room that faced the back garden and the brick wall beyond it, and I pressed my thumb hard against the bare skin of my left wrist until the pressure became a point of focus, a small bright pain that kept me from screaming.

Outside the private arbitration chamber on Mulberry Street, I stood in the blistering sun, waiting nearly three hours. The sidewalk radiated heat through the soles of my shoes. A black sedan idled at the curb across the street, its windows tinted dark, a soldier behind the wheel reading a tabloid with studied disinterest. The lawyer's office above the old bakery had its blinds drawn. The neighborhood moved around me in its usual rhythm, old women with shopping carts, kids on bicycles, men in undershirts smoking on stoops, and none of them looked at me because in this part of the city you learned early not to notice a woman standing alone outside a place where families were broken apart.

Three hours.

Then Dante finally arrived, arm wrapped around Viviana's waist.

He stepped out of a town car that gleamed like wet ink, Viviana tucked against his side in a cream linen dress that probably cost more than the quarterly rent on the arbitration office. She looked fresh, rested, her dark hair falling in a curtain that caught the light. She did not look at me. She looked through me, as though I were glass, as though I had already been erased.

The first thing Dante said was a threat. "You asked for this severance, so if my family questions it, you'd better take the blame."

I looked at his handsome face. The sharp jaw, the dark eyes that had once made my heart race when I was seventeen and foolish enough to believe that wanting someone was the same as being wanted back. I searched for any remnant of feeling, any last ember of the love I had carried for fifteen years, ten in secret and five in a marriage that was a marriage in name only.

Nothing.

I felt nothing for him anymore.

My thumb rested against my left wrist, and my hand was still. I had made my choice.

"I'll talk to your mother. I'll tell her we split amicably because of personality differences."

"No, that won't work."

Something in his tone made me follow his gaze. Across the narrow street, past the idling sedan and the fire hydrant painted in chipped silver, a café occupied the ground floor of a brownstone. Its awning cast a stripe of shade across a small table by the window.

And there she sat. Viviana Conti, comfortable as a cat in a sunbeam, an espresso untouched before her, watching us through the glass with the patient, measured calm of a woman who had already been told how this conversation would end.

It all made sense now.
