Love Is Ever-Changing, Yet Sincerely Felt
Chapter 1
Because of a phone call I made, my husband was in a coma for six months after a car accident.
I was filled with guilt and cared for him wholeheartedly.
But the first thing he did after waking up was kiss my sister.
"At the brink of death, it was Rebecca's voice that called out to me in my subconscious, giving me the courage to fight off death," he said.
To express his gratitude, he held a grand ceremony. The room was buzzing with excitement, and I clapped from the audience.
Facing the media cameras, I smiled and congratulated them.
I said, "Love can overcome anything. I wish you two eternal happiness."
By the time Joseph Harper learned the truth, he was full of tears.
——
"Marlene, what do you mean by that? Rebecca saved my life. I threw this banquet to thank her. Did you have to be so passive-aggressive about it?" Joseph yelled at me.
He had seen the video online.
He continued, "You said those things on purpose to make people speculate about my relationship with Rebecca. You're so malicious. If it weren't for you calling me home that day, I wouldn't have gotten into the accident.
"If it weren't for Rebecca, I would have already been killed."
He cornered me, his eyes bloodshot with rage.
I was utterly disappointed.
For six months, I had given up everything, dedicating myself entirely to his care.
But all he acknowledged was Rebecca Knight's call in his dreams.
He added, "You said you took care of me for six months, but I don't remember any of it. All I remember is hearing Rebecca crying and calling out to me by my side. Are you saying my brain is lying to me?"
He pushed me hard, and a sharp pain shot through my hand as it collided with the wall.
During all the time I spent by his side, I cleaned him, changed his clothes, and fed him.
Because he was obsessed with cleanliness, I didn't dare let the nurse do it.
The strain from all the effort had left a lasting pain in my arms, often causing unbearable aches.
I winced in pain just as Rebecca walked in.
"Marlene, what are you doing? Joseph just recovered; he can't be stressed out like this," she scolded me with a frown.
She added, "The doctor said he can't be left alone. If you can't handle it, I'll take care of him."
As soon as she finished speaking, Joseph let out a snort.
He said, "So this is how you've been deceiving Rebecca for the past six months to escape your responsibilities?"
He turned to Rebecca and said, "Marlene is my wife, and she has to take care of me. Besides, the reason for my accident was her. She owes me this."
Rebecca grumbled, "Marlene has been pampered since childhood, unlike me. I grew up rough and wild, so I'm much better at taking care of people.
"You just recovered, and we can't be careless. I don't feel comfortable leaving you in her care."
She started walking towards the kitchen, but Joseph quickly stopped her.
He said, "No. No one is allowed to help her with her chores."
He turned to glare at me. "What are you standing there for? Didn't you say you've been taking care of me for six months? You can't even cook. Is that how you've been taking care of me?"
He held Rebecca's hand and sat down on the sofa.
He added, "I want to see how long you can keep up this act."
Rebecca looked at me pitifully and said, "Marlene, I'll have to trouble you. But remember, the doctor advised a light diet, not too much oil or salt. Don't forget, okay?"
I stood there, silent all the while.
The dullness of my emotions clashed with Joseph's questioning gaze.
He said, "Can't keep up the act anymore? Then apologize to Rebecca. And post a video on social media to clear her name."
