Love Forsaken, Never to Return

After spending eight years with Terence Barnes, I finally accepted a painful truth: I would never outshine Pearlie Ballar. His composure shattered every time she called out to her beloved "Uncle Terry." When he abandoned me for her for the ninth time, my patience evaporated. I threw my wedding ring into the garbage and walked away forever. My sudden departure threw him into a complete panic, as he never expected me to actually stand up for myself and leave him behind.

Chapter 2

Pearlie posted a picture of Terence washing her pink underwear with the caption: “On my period, but having Terry to wash my underwear and make Chamomile tea for me? Life’s perfect.”

The photo hit me like a sucker punch to the gut. Was this really the same Terence I knew? The man who couldn't stand as much as a stained sheet without gagging? Now here he was, meticulously scrubbing her underwear by hand.

I couldn’t help but remember the one and only time I stained the bed during my period. His reaction wasn’t just mild discomfort—it was outright revulsion. He packed up his things and moved into the guest room that night and he never came back. The memory left a bitter taste in my mouth.

A sharp, humorless laugh escaped me. So much for his so-called “cleanliness.” It wasn’t about that, was it? It was about something deeper—something I didn’t have. Love.

Pearlie. She’d been a fixture in Terence’s life long before I came along. The daughter of his late neighbors, she was orphaned after a tragic house fire. Terence’s family had taken her in and from that day on, she latched onto him like he was her lifeline, calling him “Uncle Terry” with a familiarity that only seemed to deepen as the years went on.

And he let her. No—he more than let her. He adored her, doted on her and spoiled her rotten. She was his fragile, untouchable rose in a glass case and every time he looked at her, it was like the rest of the world didn’t exist.

When we started dating, I genuinely tried to build a bridge. I bought her gifts, went out of my way to be kind and did my best to win her over. But Pearlie’s response was cold and calculated. She didn’t just reject me—she made sure I knew I wasn’t welcome. My carefully chosen presents ended up in the trash and her glares were daggers aimed straight at my heart.

Then came the day she bared her true intentions and she didn’t care that I was standing right there.

“I don’t want you to be my Uncle anymore,” she declared, her voice trembling with emotion. “I want to repay you—with all of me, body and soul.”

At the time, I didn’t understand the look on Terence’s face—an unsettling mix of restraint and something I didn’t want to name. But now, it was painfully obvious: desire, barely concealed and impossible to ignore.

In the aftermath, Terence tried to smooth things over with me. He bought Pearlie her own apartment and made a grand show of sending her off, swearing he was cutting ties with her, putting the effect to wipe the thought out of her.

“Now, you don’t have to worry about her anymore. Just keep your distance—she’ll cool off eventually,” he said, his tone soothing, “we’ve been together for years, do you still not believe that you’re the only one I love?”

And I believed him. Like a fool, I believed every word.

For a while, it seemed like things were back on track. Terence poured his energy into our relationship, taking me to high-end parties, introducing me to his friends and showering me with lavish gifts. He was gentle, attentive and endlessly patient. I thought we were building something real.

But then it all unraveled.

One day, 18-year-old Pearlie posted a photo of herself passionately kissing another man on social media. Terence, who was always so composed, lost his temper in a way I’d never seen before. His face darkened, and in a flash, he smashed his phone against the wall.

I froze, too scared to speak or move. He didn’t say a word to me—just grabbed his keys and stormed out, leaving me shivering in the cold as his car roared away.

That night, I realized something chilling. Pearlie wasn’t just a part of his past. She was his weakness, the one person who could shatter all his principles.

Over time, it became his go-to excuse. Whenever I voiced my frustrations, he would brush me off with the same tired refrain: “She’s young. I’m just worried she’ll get taken advantage of.”

I was caught in an endless cycle of self-doubt, spiraling deeper into despair as I raged and pleaded for answers.

After spending two days in the hospital from sheer exhaustion, I finally dragged myself home, only to be greeted by a sight that made my stomach churn. Pearlie was sprawled on the couch, watching TV as if she owned the place. When she noticed me, she let out a derisive snort before retreating to the kitchen.

And there he was—Terence, in the kitchen, fussing over her meal like some devoted chef.

I couldn’t help but laugh bitter laugh. All these years together and not once had he cooked a single meal for me, but for Pearlie it was out of question. She broke his rules effortlessly, bending him to her whims with nothing more than a pout.

Something inside me snapped. The weight in my chest that had suffocated me for so long lifted in an instant. It didn’t matter anymore. Nothing did.

Pearlie, ever the master manipulator, pulled an ice cream bar from the freezer and strolled over to Terence, waving it playfully in front of him.

“Pearl, you can’t eat that during your period,” Terence scolded, reaching to snatch it from her hands. “You’ll end up with a stomachache again.”
