Chapter 2

Jonah came home three days after the hospital discharged me. He dropped his keys on the counter and opened the fridge. I sat at the kitchen table with my left arm in a brace, a stack of medical bills spread in front of me. My mother's jewelry box sat beside them. Empty.

"Where's the necklace?" I asked.

He pulled out a beer and twisted the cap. "What?"

"Mom's pearl necklace. And the Cartier watch. They're gone."

He took a long drink. "I sold them."

The words landed flat. No apology. No explanation. Just fact.

"You sold them," I repeated.

He set the bottle down. "We needed the money, Hope. I had an opportunity. A real one. But I needed capital to get in."

"An opportunity."

"Yeah." He ran his hand through his hair. That tell I'd learned to read years ago. "A business thing. You wouldn't understand the details."

I looked at the empty box. My mother's pearls. The ones she wore in every photograph I had of her. The watch my grandfather gave her before she died.

"Those were mine," I said quietly.

"And we're married." His voice sharpened. "What's yours is ours. That's how this works."

"You didn't ask."

He laughed. Short and bitter. "I shouldn't have to ask permission to make financial decisions for this family. That's what husbands do, Hope. They provide. They take care of things." He stepped closer. His tone shifted to something wounded. Injured. "I can't believe you're making this about some old jewelry when I'm trying to build a future for us."

My throat tightened. "What opportunity?"

"It doesn't matter now. The window closed." He picked up his beer again. "But if you'd trusted me instead of questioning everything, maybe we'd be in a better place."

I pressed my right hand flat against the table. My left arm throbbed. "Where did the money go?"

"I told you. The opportunity."

"What opportunity, Jonah?"

His jaw clenched. "You're being selfish. You're living in the past. A good wife supports her husband's decisions."

I watched his hand move through his hair again. I said nothing.

He left the kitchen. A minute later, his phone buzzed in the bedroom. I heard his voice drop low. Warm. The voice he used to use with me.

I sat alone at the table and stared at the empty jewelry box.

I didn't cry.

---

Victor Hale called me back to work on Monday. My arm was still in a brace. The physical therapist said I needed at least another month before attempting anything strenuous. But we needed the money. The medical bills were stacking up. Jonah's paycheck barely covered rent.

"Light duties only," Victor said when I arrived. He didn't look at my arm. "Stock room. Inventory counts. Nothing heavy."

"Thank you," I said.

"You'll be working with Paulina. She volunteered to help."

Of course she did.

Paulina met me in the stock room with a bright smile and a clipboard. She wore a soft pink sweater and jeans that fit perfectly. Her hair was pulled back in a neat ponytail.

"Hope!" She touched my good arm. "I'm so glad you're back. We were all so worried."

"Thanks," I said.

She gestured at a stack of boxes. "I'll handle anything heavy. You just tell me what needs counting, okay?"

She lifted a box I could have managed with one hand. She set it down gently and smiled at me. "There. See? Teamwork."

Coworkers passed by. They saw Paulina helping. They saw me standing there with my arm in a brace, watching her work.

"You're so sweet to help her," someone said.

Paulina ducked her head. "It's nothing. Hope's been through so much."

I counted inventory. Paulina carried boxes. She asked if I needed water. She offered to take my lunch break early so I could rest. She performed sympathy like a rehearsed script, every gesture perfectly calibrated.

I watched her. I said nothing.

I filed it away.

---

The call came late on a Tuesday night. I was in bed, staring at the ceiling. Jonah was still out. He'd said something about drinks with coworkers. He smelled like Paulina's perfume when he came home lately.

"Ms. Martinez?" A man's voice. Tired. "This is David Chen from Greenwood Cemetery. I'm the night groundskeeper."

I sat up. "Yes?"

"There's been vandalism at your mother's plot. I'm sorry. I thought you should know."

I drove alone. The cemetery was dark except for a single floodlight near the entrance. David met me at the gate with a flashlight.

"I'm sorry," he said again. "I called the police. They said they'd send someone in the morning."

He led me down the path. The beam of his flashlight bounced across headstones. Then it landed on my mother's grave.

The stone was toppled. Face down in the dirt. Red spray paint slashed across the back: BITCH. GOLD DIGGER. The flowers I'd placed last week were scattered and crushed. The smell hit me. Sharp. Acrid.

Someone had urinated on the grave.

David cleared his throat. "Security footage caught someone. Young guy. Drunk. He ran before I could get there."

"Can I see it?"

He pulled out his phone and showed me. The timestamp read 9:47 PM. The figure was blurry but recognizable. Matias Rose. Paulina's brother.

I knelt beside the toppled stone. My good hand pressed flat against the cold granite. My mother's name was carved on the other side. Celeste Moore. Beloved daughter.

I didn't cry.

I took photographs. The stone. The paint. The crushed flowers. I saved the security footage to my phone.

Then I drove home.

Jonah was asleep when I got back. I stood in the doorway of our bedroom and watched him breathe. His phone was on the nightstand, screen down.

I didn't wake him.

I went to the kitchen and opened my laptop. I uploaded the photographs to a cloud folder. I labeled it carefully. I added the date.

Evidence.

Then I sat in the dark and waited for morning.
