Chapter 2

POV: Evelyn

The hallway outside the hospital morgue felt like a tomb.

The air conditioning blasted from the vents above, sending a violent chill through my thin medical scrubs, but the cold barely registered. Nothing mattered anymore. I stood completely frozen against the pale cinderblock wall, my fingers locked in a death grip around the torn, muddy drawing Lucy had made for me.

*Best Day.*

The crayon letters blurred as a fresh wave of agony ripped through my chest. My seven-year-old daughter was lying on a steel table on the other side of those heavy double doors. She was gone. The bright, beautiful light of my life had been extinguished in a terrifying stampede of panicked strangers.

She had died waiting for her father to come back.

The sharp clatter of footwear echoed down the linoleum corridor, breaking the suffocating silence. I didn't want to look up. I didn't want to see anyone. But the cloying, heavy scent of expensive rose perfume reached me before they did.

"Evelyn," Sabrina sobbed.

Her voice was a high, fragile pitch that scraped against my raw nerves. I raised my head slowly. She stood a few feet away, her face wet with tears. Despite the crying, her makeup remained perfectly intact, her designer clothes unwrinkled. Nathan hovered right beside her, his shoulders hunched, his face completely drained of color.

"Evelyn, I am so, so sorry," Sabrina cried, taking a hesitant step toward me. She brought a tissue to the corner of her eye, careful not to smudge her mascara. "I never meant for any of this to happen. You have to believe me. I was just so overwhelmed."

I stared at her. My throat felt like it was packed with shattered glass.

"I was at the boutique," Sabrina continued, her voice shaking with practiced vulnerability. "I finally found the bag I've been on the waitlist for all year. But when I got to the register, I realized I forgot my VIP card at home. They wouldn't hold the item for me. It's a limited edition, Evelyn. I panicked. I just needed Nathan to come swipe his card so I wouldn't lose it. It was supposed to take two minutes. I didn't know..."

A VIP card.

My daughter was crushed to death on a filthy mall floor because this woman forgot a piece of plastic.

My gaze dropped to the glossy shopping bag still clutched tightly in Sabrina's left hand. The thick ribbon handles were wrapped securely around her fingers. The bright gold price tag swung slightly, catching the harsh fluorescent light above us. She hadn't even let go of the bag to comfort the man whose child had just died.

I shifted my eyes to Nathan. The man I had married. The man who had held our daughter when she was first diagnosed, who had promised to protect her from a world that overwhelmed her.

"You left her," I whispered. My voice was completely hollow, stripped of everything but horror. "You left our daughter alone at the toy display."

Nathan flinched as if I had struck him. His jaw tightened, and he took a half-step forward. "Evie, please..."

"She is terrified of crowds!" I shouted, the volume tearing at my vocal cords. "She is autistic, Nathan! She hates loud noises! She hates strangers! You promised to hold her hand the entire time!"

"I told her to stay put!" he pleaded, running a shaking hand through his hair. His eyes were wide, frantic. "I told her I would be right back! I just had to run inside for one second!"

"To buy a purse!" I screamed, closing the distance between us. "You left her alone in a massive crowd to buy another woman a handbag!"

I lunged forward. I didn't even know what I intended to do. I just wanted to shake him, to pound my fists against his chest until he understood the magnitude of what he had destroyed.

But as I moved, Nathan reacted.

He didn't reach out to catch me. He didn't pull his grieving wife into his arms to share the unbearable pain.

Instead, he instinctively shifted his weight and stepped directly in front of Sabrina. He raised his arm, pressing her back behind his shoulder, shielding her from me.

I froze in my tracks.

The physical rejection hit me harder than any words could. My husband was protecting his mistress from the mother of his dead child.

The silence in the hallway stretched out, thick and heavy. Nathan realized what he had just done. His arm dropped slowly to his side, but he didn't move away from Sabrina. His chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow pants. The immense guilt in his eyes was drowning him, twisting his features into something unrecognizable and desperate.

He couldn't face the reality of his own actions. If he accepted that his selfish negligence had killed Lucy, the guilt would completely destroy him. He needed a way out. He needed a scapegoat.

I watched the shift happen in real-time. His eyes hardened. The crushing guilt morphed into a frantic, defensive rage.

"Why weren't you with her?" he shouted, his voice echoing violently off the concrete walls.

I blinked, the words failing to process. "What?"

"You heard me!" Nathan yelled, pointing an accusing finger directly at my chest. "Why weren't you with her? You know she doesn't handle crowds well. You're her mother!"

Sabrina whimpered softly behind him, gripping the back of his jacket as if she were the one in danger.

"You should have been there!" Nathan continued, his voice cracking under the weight of his own delusion. "If you had just taken the day off, none of this would have happened! You know how difficult she can be in public!"

The accusation hung in the freezing air.

*You're her mother.*

He was blaming me. He had abandoned our vulnerable daughter in a sea of strangers to buy a luxury bag for his childhood friend, and now he was pinning her death on me because I was at work. Because I was saving lives in the emergency room while he threw our family away. He was willing to crucify me just to buy himself a shred of psychological comfort.

The roaring in my ears suddenly stopped.

The agonizing, chest-crushing grief that had been suffocating me for the past hour vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying clarity.

I looked at Nathan. Truly looked at him.

The man standing in front of me wasn't my husband. He wasn't Lucy's father. He was a coward. A weak, pathetic coward who would step over his own daughter's corpse just to protect his ego and his fragile conscience.

I didn't scream. I didn't argue.

The hot tears that had been burning my eyes dried up instantly. I slowly lowered my hands, still holding Lucy's torn drawing, and pressed it against my side.

I took a step back.

I looked at Nathan, and then I looked at Sabrina cowering behind him. I didn't feel anger anymore. I didn't feel heartbreak. I felt nothing but the absolute stillness of looking at two dead bodies.

"Evelyn?" Nathan faltered. The sudden silence unnerved him. His defensive anger vanished, replaced by a creeping panic as he registered the complete emptiness in my expression. "Evie, say something."

I turned on my heel.

"Evelyn, wait!" he called out, taking a hurried step toward me. "Where are you going? We have to... we have to make arrangements for—"

I stopped. I didn't turn around.

"Do not ever say her name again," I said.

My voice was perfectly calm. It wasn't a threat. It was a promise.

I walked down the long, sterile hallway toward the exit doors. Behind me, I could hear Nathan frantically calling my name, his voice cracking with a sudden, desperate terror as he realized exactly what he had just broken.

But I didn't look back.
