Chapter 5

The school-orientation reminder had given me a deadline. I wanted my belongings out before Ryan returned and turned Mason's schedule into another excuse to trap me.

"Cut the engine," I told the driver.

"The meter runs by the hour, ma'am," Hector replied. He gripped the large steering wheel of the rented box truck. "I can leave it idling if we are going to be quick."

"Turn it off, Hector. I am not rushing."

He twisted the key. The heavy diesel engine sputtered and died, leaving a ringing silence in the cab.

I pushed my door open and stepped onto the pristine concrete driveway. The three-story house loomed ahead, its tall bay windows reflecting the overcast sky. Inside, the house was empty. Ryan and Mason were currently more than four thousand miles away, checking into a luxury resort in Maui.

"Grab the heavy-duty trash bags from the back," I instructed, walking toward the front steps.

"You throwing stuff out or packing it?" Hector asked, his heavy boots thudding against the pavement.

"Both."

The deadbolt clicked. I pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped into the foyer.

The silence of the house hit me immediately. No television blaring sports highlights from the living room. No video game explosions echoing from Mason's bedroom. Just the low, mechanical hum of the central air conditioning.

"Nice place," Hector said, whistling low under his breath. "Where are the boxes?"

"There are no boxes," I said. "Go straight up those stairs to the master suite. Grab every garment bag on the left side of the walk-in closet. Leave the right side alone."

"Just clothes? No furniture?"

"Just my clothes. And my shoes."

"What about the jewelry?" he asked, pointing toward the stairs. "Usually, people want the safe emptied first."

"Leave the safe. He bought the jewelry. I am only taking what belongs to me."

Hector shrugged, pulling a roll of black plastic bags from his back pocket. "You are paying the hourly rate. Left side of the closet. Got it."

He lumbered up the curved staircase.

I bypassed the living room and walked straight into the study. The heavy mahogany desk sat in the center of the room, exactly how Ryan had left it. The metal tracks squeaked.

I bypassed the thick stacks of corporate tax returns and property deeds. I reached into the very back and pulled out a single, thin manila folder.

I flipped it open. Our original marriage certificate.

"Hey, lady!" Hector called out from the second-floor landing. "You want these silk blouses on the hangers or stuffed in the bags?"

"Keep them on the hangers," I yelled back. "Just zip the bags."

I closed the folder and tucked it under my arm. The rest of the empire Ryan built could stay locked in this room.

I walked out of the study and headed down the hallway toward the kitchen.

I stumbled slightly, catching myself against the wall. I looked down.

A pair of dirty, sand-crusted socks lay crumpled on the expensive Persian runner.

Mason.

A month ago, he had yelled at me for holding his hand near the middle school entrance. Yesterday, he had rolled his eyes at my presence at the airport, eager to follow Lauren to the boarding gate.

"Watch your step down there," Hector warned, descending the stairs with three bulging garment bags slung over his broad shoulder. He paused, eyeing the floor. "Kid left a trap."

"Yes, he did."

"Want me to toss those in the laundry room for you?" Hector offered, shifting the weight of the bags.

"No," I said. "Leave them."

Hector raised an eyebrow but kept walking toward the front door. "Suit yourself. I will load these in the truck and come back for the shoes."

I stepped over the dirty socks and walked into the kitchen.

The granite countertops gleamed, except for the space right next to the stainless-steel sink. A white ceramic mug sat there, half-filled with cold, stagnant coffee.

Ryan never put his dishes in the dishwasher. He always left them on the edge of the sink, fully expecting them to vanish by the time he returned from work.

My right hand twitched. My fingers curled inward.

Scrubbing his coffee rings. Picking up his son's discarded clothes. My muscles possessed a deeply ingrained muscle memory for cleaning up their messes.

I reached toward the yellow sponge resting on the faucet.

"Need a trash bag for the kitchen?" Hector asked, re-entering the house.

I pulled my arm back and let it drop to my side.

"No," I said, my voice steady. "The kitchen stays exactly as it is."

"Coffee smells stale," Hector noted, wrinkling his nose. "Going to attract ants if you leave it."

"Then they can hire an exterminator when they get back from Hawaii."

Hector let out a short, rough laugh. "Understood. I will go grab the shoes."

He headed back upstairs.

I turned my back on the kitchen and walked to the front entryway. The large marble console table sat beneath a gilded mirror.

I separated the heavy brass house key from the metal ring.

I let go.

The brass hit the stone with a sharp, echoing clack. The sound pierced the quiet house, final and absolute.

"All done upstairs," Hector announced, coming down with two large duffel bags. "That is everything from the left side. Truck is packed."

"Take the bags to the cab," I said. "I will be right out."

"You locking up?"

"I don't need to."

I turned toward the wall next to the coat closet. The family portrait. Ryan wore a tailored navy suit, sitting on a velvet chair. Mason stood beside him, smiling brightly. I stood behind them, my hands resting on Ryan's shoulders, fading into the background.

I reached up and gripped the edges of the silver frame.

The frame was heavy, the glass thick and cold against my palms. I carried it to the front door, where Hector had left the roll of black plastic trash bags.

The plastic billowed out.

The sharp corners of the metal snagged the plastic, tearing a small hole near the bottom, but I pushed it all the way down until the bag swallowed the smiling faces.

I grabbed the plastic drawstrings and dragged the bag out the front door.

The autumn wind whipped my hair across my face as I hauled the heavy bag down the front steps. The wheels of the green waste bin sat at the edge of the garden, near the low wrought-iron fence.

The smell of cut grass and old leaves hit my nose.

I grabbed the bottom of the trash bag and heaved it upward. The frame clunked against the plastic siding of the bin.

"Emma?" a shrill voice called out.

I turned my head.

Mrs. Gable, the neighborhood association president, stood on the other side of the open gate, holding a pair of pruning shears. Her eyes darted from the moving truck in the driveway to the heavy bag in my hands.

The torn plastic at the bottom of the bag shifted, exposing Ryan's smiling face through the glass of the silver frame.

"Are you throwing away your family portrait?" Mrs. Gable asked, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
