Chapter 1

The wedding was only halfway through when Johnny Simpson insisted he had to leave. The guests’ chatter seeped through the cracks of the dressing room door. Raelynn Ferguson looked up at her reflection. Her makeup was flawless. Her Victorian-style dress trailed elegantly down to the floor. Yet her eyes held a tired, indifferent glaze.

Behind her, Johnny was on his phone, voice pitched low.

“Margaret, don’t worry. I’ll be there soon, okay? It won’t take long—twenty minutes, tops.”

He ended the call and turned to Raelynn, expression pinched. “Margaret just got into a minor car accident. She’s never dealt with anything like this before, and she’s scared out of her mind. I don’t even know if she’s hurt. I need to go check on her.”

When Raelynn’s face tightened, he added, as if he had no choice, “This is an emergency. Her parents are useless, and I’m the only one she can rely on. Can’t you see that?”

Understand? How could she possibly understand another woman having the nerve to call her fiancé away right in the middle of their wedding?

Raelynn simply asked, “Have you made your decision?”

Johnny, already eager to be gone, answered with rising impatience. “Raelynn, Margaret is just the student my family sponsored for years. But she’s called me ‘brother’ for over a decade.”

“Ever since my parents sent her back to her biological parents, she’s been a mess. They’re ordinary people, just sponging off her, and my parents keep misreading her intentions. You can’t imagine how much pain she’s in!”

“Are you really asking me to be heartless at a time like this?”

He hurled the accusation at her, assuming Raelynn would be as compliant and understanding as always—maybe even comfort him, telling him she was the one who’d made a fuss for nothing.

But Raelynn didn’t flinch. She simply repeated, “Have you made your decision?”

Johnny’s fists clenched. “I have.”

Raelynn nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. “Then go.”

Her silhouette looked frail and somber. Johnny hesitated, a flicker of compassion passing through his eyes. He gently pulled her into a hug from behind. “Let’s have a bigger, better wedding next week—on your birthday, okay?”

“Explain things to my parents, and apologize to your mother for me.”

Then he hurried out, leaving Raelynn to clean up the mess.

Raelynn sighed inwardly. There’s no next time, Johnny. We’re done.

Sure, their marriage was a family convenience. But Raelynn and Johnny had been in a real relationship for two years, with sweet moments others envied. Marriage had felt like the natural next step.

Until the Simpsons suddenly sent Margaret—the girl they’d sheltered for years—back home, claiming she’d finished her studies and their support was over.

Margaret went back to her biological parents, but her heart stayed with Johnny.

At first, she’d cling to Johnny over the phone, crying about how she couldn’t get used to her new home, how scared she was of the dark—always while Johnny was at a candlelit dinner with Raelynn.

Later, Margaret’s calls would pull Johnny away even during Raelynn’s surgery, all because she claimed she was drowning in her thesis deadline and had a million questions.

One incident after another piled up, until today’s wedding...

Raelynn was just putting away the rings when her parents burst in.

“Raelynn, everyone’s waiting for you two to exchange rings. Where’s Johnny?”

Raelynn removed her veil. “He left. Cancel the wedding.”

“What?” Levi exploded. “How could you let him leave? There are so many guests outside. How are we supposed to explain this?”

Raelynn’s voice stayed calm. “He insisted on leaving. How was I supposed to stop him?”

Without a word, Dalia grabbed Raelynn and slapped her. “Are you useless? Why didn’t you stop him? Did all those years of studying turn your brain to mush? Johnny is Princeton’s only heir. Where am I supposed to find another son-in-law like him?”

The slap whipped Raelynn’s head to the side, leaving five red marks on her pale cheek. She wasn’t the eldest or the youngest. She had neither her brother’s privileges nor the doting love her sister got.

She’d believed marrying Johnny would be a new beginning. He was wonderful. He loved her.

But who would’ve thought he’d abandon her at the most crucial moment of her life?

Princeton and Heaven joined them then, and Dalia hurried to smooth things over with her in-laws. “The young couple had a spat, and my daughter is being stubborn. I’ll talk some sense into her and have her apologize to Johnny.”

“We’ll tell everyone the wedding is postponed.”

Raelynn’s nails dug into her palm, leaving red marks. She bit her lip and spoke coldly. “He left me for Margaret. I did nothing wrong.”

“I won’t apologize, and I won’t marry him again!”

Still pretending to smile at the Simpsons, Dalia pinched Raelynn’s arm hard and dragged her toward the door.

The guests’ mocking comments slipped through, more humiliating than the slap still burning Raelynn’s cheek.

“I heard Johnny just left without a word. How embarrassing. What kind of woman must Raelynn be for her fiancé to run off like that?”

“They were just a business match. No real feelings. All that PDA was just for show. The more people lack something, the more they flaunt it.”

Dalia hissed in Raelynn’s ear, “Did you hear them? If you step out that door, forget about ever reconciling with Johnny!”

Raelynn’s eyes trembled slightly. After a moment, she seemed to make a firm decision and clenched her fingers.

“I don’t want him anymore!”

With that, she opened the door and, wrapped in her pristine wedding dress, walked straight through the crowd.
