Chapter 2

The digital clock on the microwave read 2:14 AM when the deadbolt finally turned.

I sat in the dark living room, the crumpled pregnancy test digging into my palm. The front door swung open, letting in a sliver of hallway light. Mark stumbled in, bringing the smell of stale whiskey and floral perfume with him. He kicked off his shoes, leaving them in the middle of the entryway, and padded toward the couch.

"Avery?" he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep and alcohol. "Why are you sitting in the dark?"

He didn't wait for an answer. He dropped onto the cushions next to me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me against his chest.

"Missed you tonight," he murmured into my neck.

His hands moved under my shirt. The touch that usually set my skin on fire now felt like sandpaper. I stared straight ahead at the blank television screen.

"Mark," I said, my voice barely a whisper.

"Hmm?" He kissed my jawline, his fingers fumbling with the button of my jeans.

I grabbed his wrist, stopping him. "Do you love me?"

The silence stretched. The only sound was the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Mark sighed, a heavy, impatient sound. He pulled his hand away and leaned back against the couch.

"Avery, don't start," he said.

"It's a simple question."

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "It's two in the morning. I'm exhausted. Can we not do this right now?"

"When, then?" I asked, turning to face him. Even in the dim light, I could see the irritation tightening the corners of his mouth. "When is a good time to ask if the last seven years meant anything to you?"

He reached out and pinched my cheek, a condescending gesture that made my stomach churn.

"Stop being dramatic," he said. "Come to bed."

He stood up and walked down the hallway, leaving me alone in the dark.

I didn't follow him. I sat there until the sun came up, the pregnancy test still clenched in my fist.

The office was buzzing when I walked in at 8:00 AM. The familiar hum of ringing phones and clacking keyboards usually grounded me. This place was my sanctuary. I had spent countless nights sleeping under my desk, fueled by takeout and sheer willpower, building this company from a startup in a garage to a billion-dollar empire.

I headed straight for my desk, dropping my bag on the chair.

"Avery," a voice called out.

I turned to see Sarah, the HR manager, walking toward me with a stack of folders. She looked uncomfortable, refusing to meet my eyes.

"Morning, Sarah," I said, forcing a smile. "What's up?"

"I need you to hand over all your project files," she said, her voice tight.

I frowned. "Why? Are we shifting accounts?"

"No," she said, finally looking at me. "The new PR Director is starting today. Mark wants everything transitioned by noon."

"New PR Director?" I repeated, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "I'm the PR Director."

Sarah shifted her weight from one foot to the other. "Actually, Avery, you're not. You're... well, you're not officially anything."

I stared at her. "What are you talking about?"

"I checked the system," she said, lowering her voice. "You don't have an employment contract. No equity, no official title, no payroll record. Technically, you're not an employee here."

The floor seemed to tilt beneath me. Seven years. Seven years of late nights, skipped meals, and endless pitches. I had convinced our first investor to write a check when Mark was too nervous to speak. I had built the entire public relations strategy from scratch.

And I owned nothing.

"Show me," I demanded, my voice shaking.

Sarah hesitated, then pulled a tablet from the stack of folders and handed it to me. I scrolled through the employee database. My name wasn't there. I checked the equity distribution lists. Nothing.

I was a ghost. A temporary fixture that could be erased with a single keystroke.

I shoved the tablet back at Sarah and marched toward the elevators.

The ride to the top floor felt like an eternity. The polished metal doors slid open, revealing the executive suite. I stormed past the receptionist, ignoring her protests, and headed straight for Mark's office.

The heavy oak door was slightly ajar.

"Mark, we need to talk," I said, pushing the door open.

I froze.

Mark sat behind his massive mahogany desk. Sitting on the edge of the desk, dangerously close to him, was a tall, striking blonde woman. She wore a tailored suit and a badge that read *PR Director*.

She was leaning over, her fingers deftly adjusting Mark's tie. He wasn't pulling away. He was smiling, his hand resting casually on her waist.

"Avery," Mark said, his tone casual, as if I hadn't just barged in. "Perfect timing. I want you to meet Sophia. She's taking over the PR department."

Sophia turned her head, her hand still resting on Mark's chest. She looked me up and down, a slow, triumphant smile spreading across her face.

"So nice to finally meet you, Avery," she purred. "Mark has told me so much about you."

My chest tightened. The air in the room felt too thin to breathe.

"Mark," I said, my voice barely recognizable. "Can I speak to you in private?"

Sophia didn't move. She just looked at Mark, waiting for his cue.

"Anything you have to say, you can say in front of Sophia," Mark replied, leaning back in his chair. "She's part of the team now."

I looked at the man I had loved for seven years, the man who was the father of the child growing inside me. He looked back at me with cold, detached indifference.

"You're replacing me," I stated.

"I'm upgrading the department," he corrected smoothly. "We're a public company now, Avery. We need someone with corporate experience. Someone who knows how to play the game at this level."

"And what about me?" I asked, the words tearing at my throat.

Mark shrugged. "You can stay on as a consultant. Help Sophia transition. We'll figure something out."

He was throwing me away. Just like that.

Sophia's smile widened. She leaned closer to Mark, her shoulder brushing his.

"I think we're going to work together beautifully," she said to him, her voice low and intimate.

I took a step back, the reality of the situation crashing over me like a tidal wave. I had given him everything. My time, my heart, my future. And he had taken it all, leaving me with nothing.

Not even my dignity.
