Chapter 3

I let my hand fall from the brass doorknob. The next two weeks blurred into an agonizing nightmare. Claire took over the kitchen, the daily schedule, and my son.

Now, she sat on my living room sofa, pouring tea for Paul’s parents, Martha and Robert.

"You're too kind to me, Martha," Claire said softly, handing over a floral porcelain cup.

"Nonsense," Martha replied. She shot me a sideways glance. "Someone has to make sure you and the baby are safe."

I stood by the archway, crossing my arms. "Safe from what, Martha?"

Robert cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. "From stress, Leah. We’ve heard the rumors."

"What rumors?" I demanded.

Paul walked in from the hallway, checking his watch. "The family elders are talking, Leah. About your pregnancy."

My stomach twisted into a tight knot. "Talking about what?"

"The timing," Martha chimed in, setting her teacup down with a sharp clink. "And the paternity."

I stared at my husband. "You let them question our child?"

Paul didn't meet my eyes. He studied the intricate pattern of the Persian rug. "If you did nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear."

I let out a dry, unexpected laugh. "I've been your wife for twelve years. And you stand there and let them call me a liar?"

"I'm just saying we should do a test," Paul muttered. "To clear the air."

"There is no air to clear!" I shouted, stepping toward him.

Claire stood up, placing a protective hand over her slightly rounded stomach. "Leah, please calm down. You're scaring Nick."

I hadn't even noticed my son sitting on the bottom step of the staircase, his sketchbook in his lap.

"Don't tell me how to act in my own house," I snapped, turning my focus to Claire.

She backed up toward the stairs. Her eyes widened, playing the perfect, fragile victim. "I just don't want you to take your anger out on my baby. I know you're jealous, but please."

"Jealous?" I took another step forward. "You moved into my home. You stole my husband."

"Leah, back off," Paul warned.

I reached out, just wanting to point a finger at her chest. My hand didn't even brush her beige sweater.

Claire gasped. She threw her arms backward.

Her body tumbled down the two bottom steps. She landed on the hardwood floor with a heavy thud.

"Claire!" Paul yelled. He rushed past me, knocking my shoulder hard enough to spin me around.

Martha shrieked. Robert stood up so fast his wooden chair tipped over backward.

"Mom, why are you always hurting her?" Nick screamed. He threw his sketchbook at my feet.

I stared at my six-year-old son. "I didn't touch her."

"I saw you!" Nick cried, running to Claire's side.

Paul scooped Claire into his arms. She whimpered, burying her face in his neck.

"If anything happens to this baby, I will never forgive you," Paul snarled at me. He carried her toward the front door.

A sharp, tearing pain ripped through my abdomen.

I doubled over. My knees hit the floorboards.

"Paul," I choked out.

The heavy front door slammed shut.

Warm liquid soaked through my jeans. I looked down. Red blood pooled on the polished wood.

The room tilted. The edges of my vision went entirely black.

The rhythmic beep of a heart monitor woke me.

White ceiling tiles. The harsh smell of antiseptic.

I turned my head. The chair next to my bed was empty. No Paul. No flowers. No apology.

A doctor in blue scrubs walked into the room. He held a silver clipboard. He didn't smile.

"Mrs. Miller," he said softly.

I pushed myself up on my elbows, fighting the heavy pull of anesthesia. "My baby. Is my baby okay?"

The doctor lowered the clipboard to his side. "I'm so sorry. The baby didn't make it."

The words hung in the sterile air.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just stared at the blank wall behind him. The silence in my chest felt hollow, like a cave completely stripped of life.

"We had to perform an emergency surgery," the doctor continued. "You lost a lot of blood. You need to rest."

He turned and walked out.

I laid my head back against the flat pillow. My hand drifted down to my stomach. Flat. Empty.

Ten minutes later, the door swung open again.

Martha and Robert marched in. They didn't look worried. They looked furious.

"How could you?" Martha hissed, stopping right at the foot of my bed.

I blinked at her. "My baby is dead, Martha."

"And you tried to kill Claire's!" Robert yelled. "You pushed a pregnant woman down the stairs."

"I didn't touch her," I whispered. My voice sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete.

"We all saw it," Martha snapped. "You are vicious, Leah. Absolutely vicious. To think we welcomed you into our family."

Footsteps padded into the room.

Claire appeared in the doorway. She wore a hospital gown, leaning heavily on Paul's arm.

Paul wouldn't even look at me. His jaw was set tight.

Claire shuffled forward. Tears streamed down her pale cheeks. She placed a trembling hand over her stomach.

"Mom, Dad," Claire sobbed, looking directly at Martha and Robert.

I froze. *Mom? Dad?*

"I'm sorry," Claire wept. "I didn't want to cause this much trouble. But I have to tell the truth now."

Martha's rigid posture softened instantly. She stepped toward Claire. "What truth, sweetie?"

Claire wiped a tear from her chin. She looked at Paul, then at the older couple.

"Mom, Dad, I'm sorry," Claire said, her voice shaking with practiced emotion. "I'm the one carrying Paul's child."

The room went dead silent.

Martha gasped. Robert's mouth fell open.

Paul finally raised his head. He wrapped his arm tighter around Claire's waist, pulling her flush against his side. A public confirmation.

"It's true," Paul said.

Martha let out a choked sob of joy. She rushed forward and wrapped her arms around Claire. "Oh, thank God. A real grandchild."

Robert patted Paul on the back, a proud smile breaking across his wrinkled face. "I knew it. I knew that other baby wasn't right."

They celebrated. Right in front of me.

My dead child was still a fresh wound in my womb, and they were throwing a welcome party for his mistress.

I was out. The realization washed over me like ice water. Twelve years of marriage, erased by a single sentence. I was no longer the wife. I was the villain they needed to remove.

"Get out," I said.

No one heard me over Martha's excited chatter.

"Get out!" I screamed, grabbing the plastic water pitcher from my tray table and hurling it at the wall.

It shattered. Water splashed across the linoleum.

Paul glared at me. "You're hysterical. We're leaving."

He guided Claire out the door, his parents following closely behind, hovering over her like bodyguards.

The door clicked shut.

I was entirely alone.
