Chapter 5

Today was our wedding anniversary. Twenty years of marriage. Twenty years of sacrifices, of waiting, of staying silent. Twenty years of being invisible.

And today… I was finally leaving.

I stood by the doorway, dressed plainly, watching the house bustle with excitement—but not for me. They were all laughing, packing, buzzing about their upcoming flight.

A family trip to see the northern lights. My dream. My bucket list. Funded by my savings.

Roger walked over, tossing a bag at my feet.

“Carry that,” he said sharply. “You’re coming with us to the airport.”

I blinked. “Why?”

“I thought you’d leave me alone today.”

“Paula insisted,” he replied, not even looking at me. “Too nice, as always. Said it would be rude to leave you behind completely. But don’t get ahead of yourself—you’re flying coach. We’re in first class.”

He didn’t even flinch when he said it. Just walked past, calling for Paula and Mateo to get in the car.

I stared at the bag by my feet. Then bent down, picked it up, and followed them.

In the car, I was seated at the back. With the luggage. Like cargo. They laughed the entire way.

Mateo talked about the restaurants they were going to try. Paula said she’d take photos by the snowy mountains. Roger bragged about how much the hotel cost, and how it would be worth every peso.

No one asked me anything.

I wasn’t there as a wife. Not even as a mother. I was just the help.

I stared at my phone and quietly typed a message to Treston:

Change of plans. I'm heading to the airport with them. Be at Gate 12. I'll meet you there.

He replied seconds later:

Got it. I’ll be waiting. This ends tonight.

I glanced at the happy family in front of me. Laughing. Smiling. Not a single glance toward the back seat. But it didn’t matter.

Because I was leaving. And my gift to them—on our anniversary—was my death.

When we arrived at the airport, they rushed to check in. Luggage lined up, passports ready, boarding passes printed. Excitement hung in the air for them like perfume.

And then came my turn.

The attendant tapped at her keyboard, frowned, then said, “Ma’am, your booking is invalid. You don’t have a confirmed seat.”

“What?” I asked, though I already knew.

“Oh, right!” Paula suddenly exclaimed, clapping a hand over her mouth with exaggerated guilt. “Yours got moved to tomorrow. I forgot to tell you.”

Roger turned to me, shrugging. “Well, you can just follow us tomorrow. Head back home for now. Watch the house.”

I stared at them. So that was it.

I smiled. Tight. “Of course. Enjoy the trip.”

“Great!” Paula said brightly, linking arms with Roger. “Oh, can you take a photo of us before we go?”

Mateo handed me his phone without even looking at me. “Make sure it’s a good angle. Not one of your shaky ones, okay?”

I took the phone. My hands didn’t shake. Not this time. Not anymore. I raised the camera, framed them neatly—the perfect trio.

Roger. Paula. Mateo. Smiling like a glossy ad for betrayal.

Click. One snap. One still moment of the people who had broken me—posing like a family I had never truly been part of.

I handed the phone back silently. Mateo didn’t thank me. Paula was fixing her lipstick. Roger was on a call, barking orders to someone at the hotel.

I turned to leave, ready to disappear back into the shadows where they liked me to stay, when Paula surprised me.

She hugged me. Arms wrapped around me in a sickly-sweet embrace, her perfume suffocating.

“You should come soon,” she whispered in my ear. “We’re going to wait for you in Finland. Don’t miss the lights, hmm?”

She pulled back, smiling at me with that same glossy, practiced grin. Then her voice dropped into a whisper again, venom tucked beneath every word.

“Actually… I never booked you a flight, sister. I mean, why would I?” Her fingers brushed an invisible lint off my collar like I was a statue to be dusted. “You know your place already.”

I stared at her, heart cold but face calm.

“I do,” I said.

She blinked at my tone. It wasn’t desperate. It wasn’t defeated. It was final.

“Don’t worry,” I added, smiling gently. “By the time you come back… I’ll be long gone.”

Roger called out, “Come on, Paula. We’ll miss the boarding.”

Mateo pulled her arm. “Let’s go already.”

I watched them pass through the boarding gate, laughing, relaxed, oblivious. Their silhouettes shrank as they disappeared into the tunnel. No goodbyes. No backward glances. Not even Mateo.

I exhaled slowly. Closed my eyes.

Then I turned.

And there he was.

Treston. Waiting by Gate 12. Dressed sharply in black. Sunglasses. Calm. Steady.

He walked up to me. “You ready?”

I nodded. “More than ever.”

We walked toward the other gate. Quiet. Together. The silence was comforting, like a cocoon.

Inside the plane, I sat by the window. Treston beside me. The air was cold, the hum of the engine steady. I reached into my purse, pulled out my phone, and removed the SIM card.

No hesitation.

I opened the small window hatch beside me just enough—and threw it out. Gone.

By the next few days, when they return home… they will learn I’m already dead.

And finally, finally, I will be free.
