Chapter 3

My mom was right.

I smiled bitterly as I gazed at my lifeless body and its hardly protruding abdomen.

It was around three days ago when I knew about the child.

When I joyously told Caleb the news, he didn't look as happy as I had anticipated.

On the contrary, after I gave him the news, his expression had instantly darkened.

Caleb had shouted angrily at me, "Didn't I tell you to take protective measures? Why didn't you listen? Who allowed you to have my child?"

His twisted expression was filled with hatred back then, and it had instantly broken my heart.

We had been married for so long, but I had never seen him lose control like that before.

When I froze on the spot, Caleb seemed to have suddenly realized what he had just said.

Softening his expression, he had said in a gentler tone, "Liddy… I mean… I'm not ready for a baby yet…"

I had felt a little uneasy inside, but I didn't dare ask too much when I heard his explanation.

Now when I thought about it, he hated me and thought that I was the culprit behind Eva's misfortune, so how could he possibly look forward to the birth of our child?

When he tried his best to treat my cancer, I assumed that he was finally responding to my earnest feelings.

However, now that I thought about it, if my kidney hadn't matched Eva's body, or if Caleb hadn't thought that I owed Eva something, I would probably have died a year ago.

My mom seemed to have aged overnight. She stumbled and struggled to handle my affairs after my death.

She seemed to have gotten much older since I died.

It was cloudy on the day she settled the arrangements.

As soon as my mom went out the door, she bumped into Eva, who had been unconscious for more than a year.

Eva looked much better compared to before.

My mom had been trying to contact Caleb so that she could get my things back from him. She just wanted my things to remember me by.

When my mom saw Eva, she was overwhelmed with emotion as she ran up to the latter. She called out to Eva in slight helplessness, "Ms. Lane… Do you remember me? I'm Liddy's mom…"

Eva had a look of disgust on her face when she realized who was talking to her. She said in a slightly harsh tone, "Who are you? Do you know who I am? Did you think I'd remember any random person on the streets?"

My mom lowered her head uneasily as she begged, "Please, Ms. Lane, you must have convinced Mr. Grant, right? Please tell him that I just want to get Liddy's belongings back… Please, even if it's only because Liddy gave you her kidney…"

Eva scoffed when she heard that. "And so what if she gave me her kidney? She owed me that much!"

She had just finished speaking when she violently shoved my mom forward. She had a ferocious look on her face.

With a thud, my mom crashed onto the ground. The urn she was holding rolled out of her hands as well.

My mom's eyes were filled with anger as she threw herself forward to pick up the urn.

Eva quickly noticed the urn, and her expression shifted. When my mom was reaching out to take the death certificate, Eva stepped on my mom's hand.

"Ahh!" My mom's pained cries rang out. I was overcome with anger, and I tried to shove Eva away, but I kept passing through her body.

Eva's expression took on a vicious quality, and she applied even more pressure on the heel of her shoes, which dug further into my mom's flesh. Blood streamed out of my mom's hand.

My mom was in so much pain that she broke out in cold sweat. However, she still refused to let go.

Enduring the pain, my mom said in a trembling voice, "Don't touch… my Liddy…"

Suddenly, Eva seemed to have noticed something.

She immediately moved her foot away and fell to the ground, stumbling. She began to sob. "Mrs. Wells, I know that you're upset because Lydia gave her kidney to me, but I'm still really weak. You can't just attack me like that…"

Eva had just finished speaking when Caleb lifted my mom off the ground and sent her crashing against the steel pipes nearby.

As a steel pipe stabbed my mom's arm, blood gushed out of the wound.

My heart ached immensely, and I felt like I couldn't breathe.

Trembling, I looked at the man I had loved for so many years.

I couldn't believe how heartless he was toward my mom!

My mom was in so much pain that she couldn't speak. Her face was pale as she removed her arm and crawled with all her might toward the urn.

With a concerned look on his face, Caleb pulled Eva to her feet and asked in a gentle voice, "Are you okay, Evie?"

His eyes were filled with worry and care.

I was slightly stunned as a bitter feeling welled up in my heart. In the past, I would sometimes complain that he wasn't attentive enough, and he didn't show enough concern for me.

I originally thought that he had trouble expressing himself.

As it turned out, I simply didn't deserve his concern.
