Chapter 3

The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes each morning was my phone screen, and the first thing I felt was dread.

Seven days had passed since the livestream. Seven days of watching Morgan thrive while I disappeared.

I sat on my living room floor, laptop balanced on my knees, Pixel's head resting on my thigh. The video had already been viewed 2.3 million times. Morgan's face filled my screen, tears streaming down her carefully contoured cheeks.

"This has been the hardest decision I've ever had to make," she said, her voice breaking at precisely the right moments. "But I couldn't stay silent. Our community deserves honesty."

The comments section was a sea of hearts and praise.

*You're so brave for speaking up*

*This must have been so painful for you*

*We stand with you, Morgan*

My chest tightened as I scrolled through her recent posts. Solo content that looked eerily familiar—the same soft lighting techniques I'd developed, the same muted color palette we'd created together, even the same captions structure. "Authentic partnerships matter," one read. "Starting fresh with brands that value integrity."

She'd gained forty thousand followers in a week. Forty thousand people who believed I was everything she claimed.

"Stop torturing yourself," Alex said from my kitchen, where they'd been camped out for three days straight. "Looking at her content isn't going to change anything."

"She's stealing everything we built together." My voice came out flat, emotionless. I'd cried so much in the first forty-eight hours that I had nothing left. "And everyone thinks she's the victim."

Alex walked over, setting a mug of coffee beside me. "Let her have her moment. We're building something better."

I wanted to believe them. But when my phone buzzed with yet another email notification, hope felt like a luxury I couldn't afford.

*From: AdWeek Editorial Team*

*Subject: Update on Rising Influencers Profile*

My hands shook as I opened it.

"Due to recent developments and editorial standards regarding subjects under controversy, we've made the decision to remove your profile section from our upcoming feature. We've added an editorial note explaining the situation to our readers."

I'd been interviewed for that profile two months ago. The journalist had called my approach to brand partnerships "refreshingly ethical." Now I was a controversy that needed an editorial disclaimer.

"They published it today," I whispered, clicking through to the article. There, where my section should have been, was a stark white gap followed by a gray box: *Editor's Note: A profile originally planned for this feature has been removed pending investigation into allegations of professional misconduct.*

Pixel whined, sensing my distress. I pressed my face into his fur, breathing in his familiar scent—the only thing that still felt real.

The next email was worse.

*From: SunsetStyle Legal Department*

*Subject: Contract Termination Notice*

"Per the moral clauses outlined in Section 7.3 of our partnership agreement, we are exercising our right to immediate contract termination. Any outstanding payments have been voided, and we request return of all branded materials within 14 business days."

Eighteen months of collaboration. Gone with a single paragraph.

I set my phone face-down and opened the folder Alex and I had labeled "Evidence." Two hundred and seventeen pages now. Screenshots, metadata analysis, timeline comparisons, original analytics dashboards, every email exchange with every brand. Victoria had reviewed it twice, adding her own annotations in sharp red text.

"This is bulletproof," she'd said during our last call. "But bulletproof evidence means nothing if you present it at the wrong moment. You get one shot at this. One."

So I waited. And watched my career burn.

That night, as I was updating the evidence file with yet another screenshot proving the timestamps on Morgan's "leaked emails" were impossible, my phone lit up with a DM notification.

*From: @SophieKimOfficial*

I stared at the name, my heart suddenly pounding. Sophie Kim—fifty thousand followers, lifestyle and wellness content, someone who'd posted supportive comments on Morgan's tearful video. Someone who'd called Morgan "brave" for exposing me.

Why would she be messaging me now?

My finger hovered over the notification. Part of me wanted to delete it without reading. I couldn't handle more judgment, more people telling me what a fraud I was.

But something—instinct, desperation, or maybe just the remnant of my investigative training from college journalism classes—made me open it.

*I need to talk to you. Privately. It's about Morgan.*

The message was sent twenty minutes ago. Three dots appeared at the bottom of the screen. She was typing.

*I think I made a mistake.*
