Chapter 4

Chapter 4**

Daniel stood before me, his expression a chilling mask of anger and disbelief. His eyes were icy as he demanded an apology from me for Emma’s actions. Emma had already desecrated Sam’s memorial, turning it into a place of mockery. My heart pounded in my chest, a storm of fury and disbelief swirling within me.

“Apologize to Emma, Grace,” Daniel said, his voice as flat and commanding as if he were asking me to do something trivial.

The words hit me like a physical blow. I stared at him, my mind struggling to grasp how the man I once loved could ask me to do something so cruel.

“Never!” I shouted, my voice shaking with the weight of my grief and anger. My refusal was a roar of defiance, but Daniel’s face only grew colder, his gaze more severe.

Emma, standing next to Daniel with a self-satisfied smirk, seized the moment to deepen the wound. “Daniel, you always said Grace was a strong and decent person, but look at her now,” she sneered. “She’s making a scene in a cemetery. People will talk. They’ll laugh at you for being married to someone so disgraceful.”

Her taunts were like poison, and I could see how they affected Daniel. His eyes narrowed, his expression twisted with disgust. “Grace,” he said, his voice dripping with disdain, “you’re embarrassing me. Go home. You’ve clearly lost your mind.”

The mention of Sam, our precious son who was no longer with us, was too much to bear. Rage surged through me. I stepped closer to Daniel, my hands trembling with the urge to lash out.

“Do you still care about Sam?” I demanded, my voice a harsh whisper filled with anguish.

Daniel’s response was quick and defensive. “Of course, I do. How could you even question that? I work hard for this family. Everything I do is for you and Sam.”

I shook my head, unable to believe his words. “If you truly cared, you wouldn’t have left him alone that day,” I retorted, my voice rising with each word. “He was just a little boy, Daniel! He needed you, and you weren’t there.”

Daniel’s face flushed with anger, but he didn’t back down. “You’re still going on about that? It was a mistake, one I’ve apologized for a thousand times. Why can’t you let it go?”

His words were like daggers, reopening old wounds. The memory of that day, when I discovered that Sam had been left alone, was a constant source of pain. The guilt and anguish were overwhelming.

“You think I can just forget?” I screamed, my fury boiling over. “Sam is gone because of you! Because you chose Emma over your own son!”

Daniel’s patience snapped. He stepped forward and kicked over the memorial I had set up for Sam. The force of the kick sent it tumbling, and the tributes—flowers, notes, and mementos—scattered across the ground.

My heart shattered as I watched the tributes being blown away by the wind. It was like losing Sam all over again. I stood there, frozen in shock, unable to process the destruction of what had been a sacred place of remembrance.

“No! No, no, no!” I cried out, breaking free from the onlookers who tried to restrain me. I ran to where the items had fallen, desperately trying to gather them with my hands, but the wind carried them further away, leaving nothing but emptiness.

Emma’s cruel laughter cut through my grief like a knife. “Grace, you’re making such a fuss over a few trinkets. Do you really think this will stop us? You’re pathetic.”

With tears streaming down my face, I lunged at Emma, shoving her with all my remaining strength. She stumbled back, falling to the ground with a look of shock and fury.

Daniel’s anger was palpable as he stormed toward me. “How dare you!” he shouted, raising his hand. Before I could react, he slapped me hard across the face.

The slap was harsh, but it was the betrayal that hurt the most. The man I had once loved was now a stranger, capable of causing me unimaginable pain.

“You’ve gone too far, Grace,” Daniel said, his voice cold and unfeeling. “Your grief has turned you into someone bitter and vengeful. And because of what you’ve done here today, I’m taking Sam away from you.”

His words felt like a crushing blow. “What are you talking about?” I asked, my voice trembling with fear and confusion.

Daniel pulled out his phone, dialing a number with a finality that made my blood run cold. “Mira, pack up Sam’s things. I’m taking him to the villa. Grace isn’t fit to be his mother anymore.”

On the other end of the phone, Mira’s voice was hesitant. “Mr. Reid, I have to tell you that Sam died in a car accident the day you were supposed to pick him up from school. Also, the grave full of daisies where Ms. Smith wanted to bury her dog is where Sam’s ashes were interred.”
