Chapter 2

**Chapter 2**

The church was filled with the somber hum of whispered condolences and the rustle of mourning attire. I stood in a corner, feeling detached from the sea of faces around me. Sam’s funeral was supposed to be a time for reflection and sorrow, but all I felt was a deep, consuming anger.

Daniel and Emma approached me, their steps deliberate and measured. Emma’s face was a mask of controlled grief, her eyes glistening with fake sympathy. “Grace, I’m so sorry for your loss. Daniel should have been here, but we had some issues to deal with. Please try to understand.”

Her voice was soft, almost too soft, as if she was trying to make me believe that her excuses were reasonable. But her eyes—sharp and calculating—betrayed her true feelings. They seemed to say, “No matter what happens, Daniel is always with me, and you’re just an obstacle.”

I took a deep breath, my emotions teetering on the edge. “Oh, Daniel has been so reliable,” I said, my tone cold and biting. The bitterness in my words was clear, and I could see the discomfort flicker in Emma’s eyes.

Daniel’s face reddened with a mixture of irritation and guilt. “Grace, this isn’t the time for sarcasm. Emma and I had to handle a crisis. Can’t you see that this has been hard on both of us too?”

His attempt to downplay his absence stung. It was as if he thought that his minor inconveniences compared to my overwhelming grief. I felt a surge of frustration. How could he be so oblivious to the real pain here?

Without waiting for any further excuses, I pushed past Daniel, my movements sharp and decisive. My heart pounded heavily as I walked away, each step feeling heavier with the weight of my sorrow and anger. I couldn’t stand to be near them, their presence only deepening my sense of betrayal.

“Grace, wait!” Daniel’s voice called after me, urgent and pleading.

But I didn’t stop. My pace was steady, my resolve unshaken. This time, I wasn’t going to break down or beg for understanding. I was leaving them behind, my heart a hardened shell against their empty words.

A few moments later, I heard Daniel’s hurried footsteps catching up with me. He was breathless as he spoke, trying to salvage whatever remained of our fractured relationship. “Grace, is this really about the funeral? I can explain. I’ll make things right. Just give me a chance.”

His attempt to minimize the situation felt like a new wound. How could he be so detached from the reality of what had happened? He had neglected Sam and me, and now his focus was solely on his own guilt.

“Well, that’s convenient,” I said, my voice flat and indifferent. The words were hard to say, but I needed to be firm. I couldn’t allow myself to show weakness or vulnerability.

Daniel’s face twisted into a mix of surprise and regret. He lowered his voice, trying a new angle. “Emma was really distraught about everything. I was concerned she might do something drastic if left alone. I had to be with her. I’ll make it up to you. We can work this out. Sam will understand eventually, right?”

His words felt like a slap in the face. If he had been paying attention to anything besides his own guilt, he would have known how Sam’s absence had affected us. But his focus was solely on Emma, as if nothing else mattered.

“You’ve lost your chance,” I said firmly, shaking off his grasp as I turned to walk away. My voice carried a finality that I hoped would make him understand the depth of my resolve.

Daniel’s face crumpled into desperation. “Why are you doing this? I promise I’ll be there for Sam from now on. I’ll do whatever it takes to fix this. Please, Grace.”

His promises felt hollow, insufficient. If he had been there when Sam needed him, maybe I could have forgiven him. But the betrayal cut too deep, the hurt too fresh.

“Let’s set a time to finalize the divorce,” I said firmly, my voice steady and resolute. I could feel Daniel’s eyes boring into my back, but I refused to look back.

As I walked away, Daniel stood there, a mix of frustration and resignation on his face. It was clear he was struggling with the reality of our situation. He pulled out his phone and dialed a number, his expression one of defeat.

“Mira,” he said, his voice strained, “prepare the most exquisite toy car you can find and send it to Sam. I need you to ask him to help persuade his mother not to be so angry with me. Make sure it’s something truly special.”

Hanging up, Daniel stood alone, looking lost and defeated. His gaze followed me as I walked away, the finality of our separation settling heavily over both of us. The path ahead was clear, but the wounds of betrayal and loss would take time to heal.
