Chapter 1

I never planned to impersonate my twin sister, Laura, but when Valerie pushed her to take her own life and made her the target of cruel bullying, I knew I had to act. “You think you can ruin her life and get away with it? I’m coming for you, Valerie,” I declared, my heart pounding with the weight of my resolve.

Every taunt, every sneer, every degrading remark directed at Laura became fuel for my mission. I would mirror Valerie’s actions, using her own twisted tactics against her. I’d expose her lies and bullying, making sure she felt the same fear and humiliation she had inflicted on my sister. “You’ll regret every moment you spent tormenting her,” I vowed, determination coursing through my veins.

---

I could hear her whimpering before I even reached the door. My heart pounded harder than it had during any hunt, my mind clouded with fear. Laura... please be okay.

With a quick swipe of my hand, I shoved open the heavy oak door to find her crumpled on the floor. The scent hit me first—wolfsbane, acrid and deadly. My eyes snapped at the bottle beside her trembling fingers. Her pale skin shimmered with sweat, her lips a sickly shade of blue.

“Laura!” I growled, my voice catching in my throat.

She barely moved, her golden eyes—our shared feature—glazed and distant. It was the first time I’d seen fear take such a brutal hold of her. But beneath the fear, I could sense her pain, sharp and relentless.

I knelt beside her, cradling her head as her breathing came in shallow gasps. “What did you do?” My voice was a broken whisper, betraying the fierce howl that bubbled within me.

“I… couldn’t,” she rasped. “I couldn’t take it anymore, Livia. They—” Her voice faltered, and her eyelids fluttered closed.

“No! Stay with me!” I pressed my forehead against hers, my fingers clutching her shaking form. I should have seen this coming. I should have protected her.

I lifted her in my arms, the desperation surging through me. Laura had always been fragile, like glass that sparkled in the moonlight but cracked too easily. But this… this was my fault for letting her go to that hellhole of a school alone.

My legs moved without thinking, carrying her through the packhouse halls, my wolf stirring beneath my skin, growling with the urgency of the situation. Alpha. He’ll know what to do.

It wasn’t far, but every second felt like an eternity. Her heartbeat, weak and irregular, echoed in my ears like the ticking of a death clock. Don’t leave me, Laura. Don’t you dare leave me.

The doors to the Alpha’s quarters were open, and there he stood, towering and imposing as ever, our leader, our protector. His eyes darkened when he saw her limp body in my arms. Without needing to explain, he motioned for us to follow him to the pack healer’s den.

Once inside, I laid her down on the healer’s bed, my breath catching as the pack healer immediately set to work, her hands glowing faintly with magic I didn’t quite understand. Wolfsbane was a poison meant for us, for our kind, and I had no idea how close it had come to killing my sister. The thought made my claws twitch.

The Alpha turned to me; his eyes hard but his voice steady. “What happened, Livia?”

I struggled to find the words. “They broke her.” My voice cracked, anger simmering under my skin. “The other wolves at the academy—those… those mongrels. They bullied her and harassed her day after day. She… she couldn’t handle it anymore.”

His eyes softened for a brief moment, and for the first time, I saw the weight of leadership in the set of his shoulders. “You should’ve come to me sooner. We protect our pack, no matter what.”

“I didn’t know…” I clenched my fists, feeling my nails dig into my palms. I didn’t know it had gotten this bad. How could I have missed the signs? The subtle shifts in her behavior? The way her laughter had become forced, her smiles rare, her once bright aura dimming until nothing was left but shadows.

Minutes passed like hours. Finally, the healer sighed, her hand resting on Laura’s forehead. “She’ll live, but the poison has left scars. Not just physical, but here.” She tapped her temple. “The mind can only endure so much pain before it breaks.”

Laura’s eyes fluttered open, her gaze locking onto mine. Weak, but alive.
