I Watched My Husband Marry Another Woman Chapter 1

I found out I was never his wife on a Tuesday evening, exactly one month after our wedding. The irony wasn't lost on me—I'd spent seven years believing in a fairy tale that had never legally existed.

The discovery happened by accident. I was curled up on our cream-colored sofa, scrolling through Instagram after a long day at the design firm. The apartment was quiet except for the soft hum of the air conditioning and the distant sounds of Manhattan traffic thirty floors below.

A notification popped up—a mutual friend had tagged me in a livestream. I tapped it without thinking, expecting some work event or casual get-together. Instead, my breath caught in my throat.

The camera panned across a stunning Parisian venue, sunlight streaming through tall windows. White roses cascaded from crystal chandeliers, and string quartet music floated through the audio. My fingers froze over the screen as I saw him—Jameson, my husband, looking more handsome than I'd ever seen him in a tailored black tuxedo.

But he wasn't looking at me.

He was walking down the aisle toward a woman I'd never seen before. She was stunning—dark hair, olive skin, and a smile that lit up the entire room. The caption beneath the video read: 'Giovanna Bell and Jameson Carter—Paris Wedding!'

My wine glass slipped from my suddenly numb fingers, tipping sideways and spilling red liquid across our pristine white carpet. I didn't move to clean it up. I couldn't. I watched, transfixed, as Jameson took this woman's hands in his. The joy on his face was radiant—a look I'd never once seen directed at me in seven years together.

'My beloved Giovanna,' his voice came through the speakers as he began his vows. 'You are the love of my life, the woman I've waited for all these years...'

I watched the entire ceremony without blinking. When they kissed, something inside me shattered so completely that I felt hollow.

The next morning, I moved with a strange, detached calm. While Jameson was in the shower, I retrieved our marriage certificate from the fireproof lockbox where we kept important documents. I'd never questioned it before—why would I? I trusted him completely.

Sitting at our kitchen island with my laptop open, I began searching public records. The New York State Department of Health. City Clerk's office. Every database that should have contained proof of our union.

Nothing.

I examined the certificate with shaking hands, noticing for the first time the slight difference in the official seal, the registration number that didn't match the formatting of actual records. Two hours of searching confirmed what my heart already knew—the document was a forgery. Beautifully crafted, but fake.

I was never his wife.

Two days later, Jameson returned from what he called a 'business trip.' He walked through our apartment door with a bouquet of white roses—my favorites, or so he thought—and a smile that never reached his eyes.

'Hey, beautiful,' he said, kissing my forehead. 'What do you want for dinner tonight? I thought we could try that new place downtown.'

I looked at him—really looked at him—and saw a stranger. How had I never noticed the calculation behind his charm? The practiced ease with which he lied?

'I'm not feeling well,' I replied, my voice steady despite the storm inside me. 'Maybe just something simple at home?'

'Of course,' he nodded, setting the flowers in a vase. 'Whatever you need.'

I accepted the flowers with a smile that felt like it might crack my face. Behind my eyes, a plan was forming—methodical, precise, and absolutely final.

While he was at work the next day, I searched our apartment. In his home office, behind a false panel in his desk drawer—the one he claimed contained only old contracts—I found a second phone. The screen was filled with messages and photos that confirmed my worst fears.

Giovanna, heavily pregnant, lounging in what was clearly Jameson's Paris apartment.

Hotel receipts spanning years.

Appointment cards from a French obstetrician.

And most damning of all—a photo of Jameson with his hand tenderly placed on Giovanna's swollen belly, his face alight with a father's joy.

I photographed everything, replaced the phone exactly as I'd found it, and closed the drawer with a soft click that sounded like a coffin lid.

Three days later, at a colleague's dinner party, Jameson's mask slipped completely.

'Come on, Rosalie,' he urged, pushing a cocktail toward me. 'Everyone's having one. Don't be antisocial.'

I knew about my severe alcohol allergy. Jameson knew too—he'd been with me during a previous reaction years ago. But tonight, under pressure from someone I couldn't see but could feel was watching from the shadows of his life, he was determined to push me out.

'Jameson, you know I can't,' I said quietly.

'One sip won't kill you,' he insisted, his smile tight. 'Just try it.'

The other guests watched, uncomfortable but saying nothing. I took the glass, knowing what would happen but unwilling to expose my hand before I was ready to disappear.

I took a single sip.

Within minutes, my throat began to close. The room tilted sideways as I slid from my chair onto the floor. Through the haze of my rapidly failing consciousness, I saw Jameson's face—not with concern, but with panic.

Not for me.

For himself.

As darkness claimed me, one thought crystallized with perfect clarity: I would never again be the woman who believed in his love.
