Chapter 2

I put my keys on the counter.

Muscle memory. Three years of it. My hand moved before my brain caught up, and by the time I realized what I'd done, the keys were already sitting next to his coffee mug. The one that said World's Okayest Engineer. The one I bought him as a joke. The one he used every single morning without fail.

I stared at the mug.

The apartment stared back.

I had nowhere I wanted to go, that was the honest truth of it. I could call someone. Get a hotel. Do fifty different things that were smarter than standing in Cameron's kitchen in my boardroom clothes listening to the refrigerator hum like nothing had happened.

But I came here. Because twelve hours ago, this was still home.

I walked to the bedroom.

The door was already open.

I didn't hesitate. Went straight for the closet. Maybe I needed to see it. Maybe some part of me already knew.

I opened it.

His side was half-empty.

Not all the way. He'd left the shirts that needed dry cleaning. The ties he never wore. The shoes that pinched his feet but cost too much to throw away. He left the inconvenient things. He took everything that mattered.

He packed before the boardroom.

I had to sit down.

The edge of the bed. Slowly. Like my knees made the decision before I did. My eyes burned. One tear made it out before I caught it and pressed the back of my hand against my cheek and shut the whole thing down.

No. Not here. Not in this room. Not for him.

I rolled my eyes at myself, because even now, even like this, some part of me still needed to be the girl who held it together. I stood up. Started moving.

My things were pushed to the back of my side, always pushed back, because Cameron's shoes took up too much space and I never said a word about it. Something about that detail hit me harder than the half-empty closet did. I pressed my lips together and started folding. T-shirts. One sweater. The sneakers I'd worn every day for two years before investor meetings turned me into someone who wore heels.

Then my hand found the small gray box.

Nothing written on it. I didn't need a label.

I sat down on the floor, crossed my legs, and opened it.

My mother's hair clips were inside. Seven of them. Brown and burgundy, plastic, worn smooth along the teeth from years of use. She wore them at her temples every morning both arms lifted, eyes in the bathroom mirror. I used to sit on the edge of the tub and watch her. The quiet, ordinary intimacy of that.

I was seventeen when she left.

Not suddenly.

Quietly.

By the time I understood how far away she’d gone, I couldn’t reach her anymore.

There's a reason I built what I built.

I held the clips in my palm and didn't say it out loud. I just felt it, the specific weight of something you cannot take back.

Underneath the clips was my father's book. Dog-eared. Spine cracked in four places. His handwriting lived in the margins small, cramped and precise. He used to say the only way to read a book was to argue with it the whole way through. I'd read his margin notes the way other people read journals.

Keep figuring it out, baby girl.

His voice. Still in my chest, clear as anything.

I sighed. Long and slow. Put everything back, stood up, and kept moving.

Methodical. Quiet. The way I always worked when I was trying to outpace something I couldn't name. Stacking. Folding. Keeping my hands busy so my brain didn't get a chance to sit down.

I reached over the mattress to grab my charger from the gap between the bed and the wall.

My fingers found something else.

A tablet. Thin. Face up. Unlocked. The screen lit the second I touched it.

I didn't open anything.

I want to be clear about that. I did not open the thread. Didn't read a single word. The screen came alive and I saw the notification banner, and that was already more than enough.

Lana's name.

And a date.

I went completely still. My hand wasn't shaking.

The date wasn't last week. Wasn't last Tuesday, some moment of weak clarity between two people who should have known better. It was weeks ago. Plural. A month. Maybe longer.

I pressed the tablet face-down on the mattress.

Slowly. Like setting down something I didn't trust myself to hold.

This wasn’t one terrible night.

Whatever had happened between them had started weeks ago.

Maybe longer.

And if that was true, then the boardroom hadn’t been the beginning.

It had been the end of something they’d been building without me.

I picked up my box. Clenched my free hand once. Felt my knuckles pull tight.

Let it go.

I walked out of the bedroom without touching a single thing of his.

The keys were still on the counter.

I left them there.

In the elevator going down, I stared at the doors. I let myself say the one true thing I'd been carrying since I was seventeen.

"My mother died from loving someone who couldn't stay."

The lobby light cut through the gap as the doors opened.

"I am not my mother."

I didn't know yet what I was going to do.

But I was going to do something.
