Chapter 1

I married one of the world's top billionaires—Julian Sterling.

But to the world, I didn't exist.

In the public eye, he was the cold, charismatic business tycoon.

To me, he was the man who once promised me forever... only to cage me in a gilded prison of a marriage. For five years, I played the role of his secret wife, fooling myself into believing his affection was enough to survive on.

As long as he still looked at me the way he used to, it didn't matter if the world never knew my name.

But when his childhood sweetheart, Sloane Ashford, returned from Europe, the illusion shattered.

I saw that the thread holding our marriage together wasn't love, but a contract that could be severed at any moment—cold, brittle, and worthless.

So, I slipped the divorce papers into a stack of urgent documents he needed to sign before a board meeting.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I watched him sign his name, his irritation making him careless. That single, reckless signature ended our marriage—and gave me my life back.

Now, I've started over in Alaska, with more than just my independence.

I'm pregnant with his child.

When Julian discovers what he's truly lost—his wife and his heir—he will stop at nothing to get me back.

But the woman he once took for granted is long gone.

He taught me the art of heartbreak.

Now, it’s his turn for a lesson in loss.

Walking out of my lawyer's office, a stack of files in my arms and the divorce papers hidden within, the wedding ring on my finger felt impossibly heavy.

It wasn't just metal. It was a brand seared into my skin, a constant reminder of a vow that had long since died.

Back at the Fifth Avenue penthouse, the security guard at the door gave me a cursory glance, his expression impassive.

Niles, the butler, was no different.

To them, I was invisible—a plainly dressed, unremarkable shadow.

The man they served had never once publicly acknowledged me as his wife.

I didn't go inside. Instead, I stood in the foyer, my eyes fixed on the massive, built-in screen on the wall.

The annual charity gala was being broadcast live.

Julian stood in the spotlight, poised and confident, thanking Sloane Ashford for inspiring his new environmental fund.

He claimed the fund was born from an all-night conversation they’d shared. A bitter laugh almost escaped me. That was my idea, a dream I had whispered to him over countless nights.

Sloane stood beside him, the vintage Patek Philippe on her wrist—a matching pair to Julian's—glinting harshly under the lights. A silent slap in the face.

I walked calmly into the study. He was already home.

Sloane was perched on the armrest of his chair, her fingers intimately massaging his temples.

I placed the thick stack of documents in front of him.

"Julian," I began, my voice so steady it startled me, "these are the quarterly investment reports. You need to review and sign them immediately, before the board meeting."

Sloane turned, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. "Clara, you're back. Julian has a splitting headache from all this paperwork. You should really let him rest."

Her voice was soft, yet it dripped with an undeniable possessiveness.

She leaned in, purring playfully, "Just sign them quickly, Julian, so we can finally get some rest."

Julian glanced up, his brow furrowed in annoyance as he massaged his temples. "Always more paperwork, Clara."

He reached for the files, distractedly flipping to the last page.

Sloane leaned in closer, her cloying perfume filling the air.

"It's just a few reports, Julian. Don't overthink it. Just sign."

A smirk touched his lips, as if he were dealing with some triviality.

Then, without a second glance at me, he carelessly scrawled his name.

The tip of the pen glided across the paper—swift, indifferent, final.

That ink was my declaration of freedom.

My pulse pounded in my ears. I gathered the documents, my hands trembling so badly I could barely hold on to them, terrified he might realize what he had just done.

"Thank you," I whispered.

I turned and fled before my voice could shatter completely.

Outside the apartment, the cold New York air seared my lungs. My knees felt weak, but my heart—my heart was lighter than it had been in five long years.

He signed it.

Without looking.

Without knowing.

Julian Sterling had just signed away the only woman in the world who had ever truly loved him.

My father had been the Sterling family's chief legal counsel. He died in a plane crash alongside Julian's grandfather, Arthur Sterling, while shielding him from the impact. Racked with guilt over my father's sacrifice, the Sterling family sponsored my upbringing.

Before Arthur passed away, he entrusted me to Julian, who was ten years my senior. He was disciplined, distant, and dazzling.

I mistook my girlish admiration for love.

And he treated his responsibility as a solemn obligation to be fulfilled.

After an accident left me orphaned and alone, he stood before me, his eyes cold. "I'll take responsibility."

I agreed, thinking it was a blessing.

But a marriage built on duty is more fragile than the paper the vows are written on.

Then Sloane returned from Europe—the only woman the Sterling family had ever deemed worthy of him.

From that moment on, his tenderness was no longer mine. His home was no longer mine.

Even his silence belonged only to her.

Now, with that careless signature, I finally had what I'd prayed for through countless lonely nights.

Freedom.

The ring on my hand was still heavy, but it no longer had the power to make my heart ache.

Because for the first time, I knew I could take it off.

And when Julian finally realized what he'd signed today—it would be far too late.
