Chapter 2

Muffled bass thudded through the concrete ceiling above me.

Upstairs in the grand ballroom, crystal flutes were clinking and laughter echoed through the vents. Evelyn was safe, her name scrubbed clean before the morning papers could even go to print, and the Miller family was celebrating her narrow escape with vintage champagne.

Down in the dark, the heavy deadbolts suddenly groaned.

The iron door swung open, casting a narrow wedge of yellow light across the damp floor. Julian walked into the cellar, holding a chipped porcelain plate with leftover bread crusts and cold meat scraps. He wore a crisp white dress shirt, his silk tie loosened, looking every bit the triumphant heir. The guards pulled the iron door shut behind him, and the deadbolts slid back into place.

He dropped the plate onto the dusty floor with a dull clatter.

“Eat,” Julian said, looking down at me with cold disgust. “The detectives will be here at six sharp. I don’t need you passing out during the initial booking and making a scene.”

I sat against the wall, watching him in silence.

Julian reached into his tailored slacks, pulled out a silver credit card, and tossed it so it landed against my knee.

“There’s twenty thousand dollars in that account,” he said, his voice dripping with condescension. “It’s enough for whatever commissary comforts you’ll need inside. Once you take the plea deal, my lawyers will handle the rest. You keep your mouth shut, do your time, and don’t mention Evelyn or our marriage to a single soul.”

I looked at the thin plastic card, then met his gaze. “And if I refuse to play your martyr?”

Julian sneered, stepping closer until the toe of his Italian leather shoe touched my hand.

“You won’t refuse. What else do you have, Selena? You’re an orphan from a defunct charity home. If you make a fuss, I’ll bury whatever pathetic little reputation you have left. I’ll make sure the media brands you as a deranged gold-digger who stole my sister’s car to kill a politician’s boy out of spite. You’ll rot in a cage for twenty years instead of five.”

He leaned down, resting his hands on his knees, his eyes gleaming with cruel certainty. “Be grateful I’m even offering you an allowance.”

I didn't blink. The numb shock from hours ago had hardened into absolute steel.

Slowly, I reached into my inner jacket pocket. My fingers closed around the folded stack of legal documents I had prepared weeks ago.

I stood up.

Julian straightened, a look of mild irritation crossing his face. “What are you doing?”

I raised my arm and hurled the thick paperwork straight into his face.

The sharp corners of the documents snapped against his jaw.

Julian flinched, stepping back in shock. “Are you out of your mind?”

The white sheets fluttered between us, settling across the dirt. The bold header was plainly visible in the dim light: *Unconditional Dissolution of Marriage.*

“Sign it,” I said, my voice level and icy. “I’m taking nothing from you, Julian. Not a single cent, not your name, and certainly not the blame for your sister’s crime.”

Julian looked down at the divorce papers, his expression twisting from surprise into mocking fury. “You want a divorce? You think you have the right to demand anything from me? You were a nobody until I married you!”

“You really believe that, don't you?” A cold, humorless smile touched my lips. “You think you built your empire on talent?”

Julian’s eyes narrowed. “What did you say?”

“The South Coast harbor terminal,” I said softly, taking a step forward. “The three-billion-dollar naval logistics contract that saved your father’s firm from bankruptcy two years ago. The municipal land rezoning that tripled your family’s net worth last spring. Did you honestly believe a mid-tier regional developer like you won those bids against international conglomerates on your own merit?”

Julian’s face drained of color for a fraction of a second before flushing dark red with rage. “What kind of nonsense are you trying to spin? My board closed those deals!”

“Your board couldn't even secure an introductory meeting,” I countered, locking eyes with him. “The contracts landed on your desk because I approved the routing through Vance-backed private trusts, and the rezoning only moved after our development partners funded the required infrastructure commitments. You spent three years basking in glory you never earned, Julian. You’re nothing but an empty suit playing CEO with my shadow capital.”

“Shut your mouth!” Julian roared, his pride shredded.

He lunged forward, his large hand snapping around my throat. He slammed me back against the cold brick wall, his grip tightening until my breath cut off.

Veins bulged along his temples, his face inches from mine.

“You arrogant, delusional bitch,” he hissed, his spit spraying across my cheek. “You think fabricating fairy tales is going to save you? Tomorrow morning, you’re going straight to Blackthorn Maximum Security. I’ll pay the guards to throw you in solitary. You won’t last thirty days in that pit!”

I didn't struggle. I stared straight into his bloodshot eyes, watching his panic mask itself as violence.

Before he could tighten his grip any further, the estate’s perimeter sirens shattered the night.

A deafening, rhythmic blare ripped through the foundations of the manor. The overhead lights in the basement flickered violently, and the bass music upstairs stopped instantly, replaced by the screams of party guests and the sound of breaking glass.

Julian froze, his fingers loosening on my neck. “What the hell is that?”

A series of thunderous, metallic impacts shook the entire compound. The sound of high-tensile steel folding under immense force echoed from the front gates, followed by the roar of heavy custom V8 engines tearing across the private driveway.

Sharp cracks from less-lethal impact rounds echoed above us between shouted commands.

I heard Julian’s private estate guards shout above us before heavy thuds rattled the upper floorboards. In less than twenty seconds, the shouting ceased entirely, replaced by the heavy, synchronized tread of combat boots.

Julian stumbled backward, letting go of my neck. He pulled a compact firearm from his jacket, his hands shaking as he aimed at the open cellar staircase. “Who is out there? Security! Report to the basement!”

There was no answer from his men.

The air in the stairwell grew heavy with the sharp smell of flashbang residue. A low, mechanical hum vibrated through the stone steps.

Two massive hydraulic rescue spreaders clamped onto the remaining steel door frame. With a sharp groan of tearing metal, the industrial reinforcement bolts sheared off like plastic, and the heavy security gate was ripped from its hinges and tossed aside like trash.

A dozen tactical operators clad in matte-black composite body armor swarmed into the cellar. High-intensity weapon lights swept across the darkness, pinning Julian in blinding white beams.

“Drop the weapon! Face down on the floor! Now!”

Julian tried to raise his gun, his voice cracking with terror. “Do you know who I am? This is private property—!”

A contractor moved forward in a blur, striking Julian’s wrist with the barrel of his rifle. Julian screamed as the gun flew from his grip. Before he could turn to run, another operator kicked out his right knee, forcing him hard onto the concrete. The operator pinned Julian’s arms behind his back and planted a heavy combat boot directly between his shoulder blades, smashing his cheek against the dirt.

Julian choked, gasping under the crushing weight. “Get off me! Who hired you? Who the hell are you?”

None of the operators acknowledged him. They stepped aside in unison, snapping to rigid attention along the damp stone walls.

The heavy thud of leather boots descended the staircase.

Through the drifting haze of tactical smoke walked Kieran Cruz. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and formidable, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit beneath a long, heavy wool overcoat. His sharp, angular face carried the chilling calm of an apex predator who commanded armies across continents.

Julian looked up from the floor, his eyes widening in pure horror as he recognized the man standing in his wine cellar.

“K-Kieran Cruz?” Julian stammered, his voice trembling violently. “The head of Vance Global Defense? Why are you in my house? What is this?”

Kieran didn't spare Julian a single glance.

He walked directly toward me, his expression softening as his eyes took in the bruise forming on my jaw, the split on my lip, and my thin, rumpled clothes.

Without a word, Kieran stripped off his heavy overcoat. He stepped forward and wrapped the thick, warm wool securely around my trembling shoulders.

Then, slipping an arm behind my back, he steadied me gently against his chest with absolute care.

Julian watched in complete disbelief, struggling against the boot pressing him into the stone. “Cruz! What are you doing? That’s my wife! She’s a penniless orphan!”

Kieran paused.

Standing close enough to shield me, the feared titan of the international defense underworld lowered his head and sank onto one knee before me in the center of the ruined cellar.

His voice was deep, resonant, and filled with unwavering devotion.

“Eldest Miss,” Kieran said, his head bowed. “I have come to take you home to reclaim your throne.”
