Chapter 4

I didn’t care that each breath stabbed through my ribs like glass splinters. I didn’t care that Nathaniel’s voice thundered from behind, calling my name in panic. None of it mattered. My mother’s ashes—her memory—were the only sacred thing I had left, and Cassandra had defiled them like they were garbage.

Her laughter, strained through gritted teeth, sliced through my fury. “She was nothing, Clara,” she sneered, “just like you.”

That was it. Something inside me snapped. We crashed into the counter, our bodies slamming with a heavy thud that rattled through my bones. Her nails scraped down my cheek, sharp and burning, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. Years of swallowing my pain, of pretending to be fine while she got away with everything, boiled over in that single moment. All those times she lied and manipulated—and they all still believed her.

Nathaniel’s voice boomed. “What the hell are you two doing?!”

Before I could move, his hand grabbed my arm and yanked me back hard. Pain tore through my shoulder, white-hot. Cassandra, ever the actress, immediately crumpled to the floor and began to sob.

“She attacked me!” she whimpered between fake tears. “I was just trying to be kind, and she went crazy!”

“What?” My voice broke, trembling with disbelief. “She burned Mom’s necklace! She threw away her ashes!”

But then heavy footsteps pounded behind us. My father burst into the room, face twisted in rage.

“Enough!” he roared. “You ungrateful little monster!”

Before I could explain, his palm struck me across the face. The impact echoed. I hit the floor so hard my teeth rattled, the metallic taste of blood flooding my mouth.

No one stopped him. Not Nathaniel. Not Cassandra.

“Look what you did to Cassandra!” my father bellowed. “You’re a disgrace, Clara. I should’ve left you with that worthless stepfather when your mother died! Should’ve never taken you back!”

I tried to move, to crawl away, but my limbs refused. My ribs screamed with every shallow breath. “Please…” I whispered weakly. “Please stop…”

Nathaniel’s foot slammed into my side. Pain ripped through me and I screamed. My vision blurred into nothing but color and sound—red, white, ringing.

“Please…” I begged again, voice fading. “I’m hurt…”

No one listened.

“Pathetic,” my father spat. “Playing the victim again, as always.”

“Come on,” Nathaniel muttered, grabbing Cassandra’s wrist. “She’s not even worth this.”

And just like that, they walked away.

The door closed. The silence that followed was worse than the blows. I lay there, broken on the cold floor, blood soaking into my sleeve.

“Help…” I tried to whisper. “Please… somebody…”

But nobody came.

---

When I opened my eyes again, everything was sterile—white walls, white sheets, a faint beeping sound beside me. Every breath hurt. My chest was wrapped in gauze, my head pounding like a drum.

A nurse appeared in my blurry vision, adjusting the IV line. “You’re awake,” she said softly. “You’re very lucky, Miss Vargas. If the man who brought you here hadn’t acted fast, you wouldn’t have survived the internal bleeding.”

I blinked weakly. “Man?”

She nodded. “He didn’t leave his name. He just told us to take care of you.”

Tears welled in my eyes. Another hospital bed. Another set of bandages. Another reminder that I had almost died. Again.

The nurse’s voice softened even more. “Miss, what happened to you… isn’t normal. Do you want to report this? We can help.”

My throat was raw, but I forced out the words. “Yes,” I whispered. “I want to report everything.”

She gave a small nod and squeezed my hand. “I’ll call the authorities right away.”

For the first time, I didn’t stay silent. I told them everything—the abuse, the neglect, the years of being treated like a mistake. And most of all, I told them about Cassandra. Because everything always started with her. Her jealousy. Her lies. Her endless cruelty that everyone excused as “sibling rivalry.”

They listened carefully, taking notes. No one dismissed me. For once in my life, my voice wasn’t swallowed by their version of the truth.

---

Hours later, the door slammed open. Nathaniel stood there, face twisted in anger. “What the hell is this, Clara? Police reports? Are you insane?!”

I struggled to sit up, wincing at the pain. “I’m not insane,” I said quietly. “I’m finally done being silent.”

He let out a harsh laugh. “All this because of a damn urn? You’re pressing charges over that? She didn’t mean to upset you, for God’s sake.”

“She told me to die, Nathaniel,” I said, my voice trembling but steady. “She looked me straight in the eye and said she wished I was dead.”

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “You’re sisters. People say terrible things in fights. Don’t take it so seriously.”

I laughed—cold, broken. “After everything she’s done, that’s what you tell me? That it’s normal?”

“She didn’t mean it,” he muttered.

I turned my face away. “Then neither do I.”

---

Later that evening, Cassandra strutted into the hospital room, crocodile tears glistening on her cheeks. “You don’t need to worry anymore,” she said sweetly. “I’ll talk to the police. It’s all a misunderstanding.”

Behind her came my father, his expression carved in stone. “You’re dropping those charges,” he said, voice sharp and final. “Now.”

I stared straight ahead, saying nothing.

“Do it, Clara,” he growled. “Apologize.”

They stood around me—Cassandra with her fake pity, Nathaniel with his tired contempt, and my father with his fury. I was surrounded, cornered, and small all over again.

“Fine,” I whispered, my tone flat. “I’ll apologize.”

Cassandra’s smile returned instantly. She stepped forward, pretending to hug me like a caring sister. “It’s okay,” she said aloud, for them to hear. But as her lips brushed my ear, she whispered, venomous and low, “Why are you still alive? You should’ve died. But don’t worry—the next time, you will.”

I didn’t flinch. “Don’t worry,” I whispered back. “You’ll never see me again.”

---

That night, I lay awake, staring at the ceiling. The hospital lights hummed softly. My heart felt hollow—no rage left, just exhaustion and clarity.

The next morning, the doctor handed me my discharge papers. It was too soon, but I wasn’t surprised. Hector probably pulled a few strings; hospital bills were never worth paying for a daughter he didn’t love.

I went home quietly. The house smelled of Cassandra perfume and arrogance. Nathaniel sat at the dining table, pen in hand, signing what looked like property papers.

“Can you sign this for me?” I asked, voice calm, holding a folder.

He didn’t even glance up. “What now? Another hospital fee? God, you’re such a burden. You’ve cost us enough already.” He scrawled his signature carelessly and tossed the pen onto the table. “Next time, don’t bother coming back.”

I took the signed paper, pressing it against my chest like it was my last lifeline.

“Sure,” I said softly. “I won’t come back.”

He didn’t hear me—or maybe he did and just didn’t care.

But I meant every word.

Tomorrow, I’d be gone. Not quietly, not begging for permission this time. For good.

And when I left, I’d make sure they felt the weight of my absence. Because by the time they realized I was no longer there—by the time they noticed the empty chair, the silent rooms, the untouched meals—it would already be too late.

I would be too far away for them to reach.
