I Stopped Chasing Him After Eight Years

“Renee, we came to that movie for you, and you just walk out? Now Hope's worried sick and blaming herself. Tomorrow you apologize to her, properly.”

I didn't answer a word. I just turned the phone face-down on the table.

Samuel didn't get home until late. He held out a box to me, almost coaxing.

“That cake shop you always wanted to try. I stood in line two hours just to get it for you.”

Bringing me something to eat after a fight was one of his rare gestures.

And I always took the way out he offered, and stopped pushing.

That shop did everything to order. I'd mentioned it to Samuel for more than a year.

Every time he'd said it was manufactured hype, that wasting that much time in line for one lousy cake wasn't worth it.

Inside the box the cream had melted completely, sunk into a sticky mess, and my appetite vanished on the spot.

But after wanting it for over a year, I still took one small bite.

I opened my phone, and Hope's social media had just updated.

The photo was that same cake the way it was supposed to look, and you could clearly see the bite she'd taken out of it.

Caption: Life is as sweet as cake, what a shame my stomach's so small.

My stomach turned over.

“You've had the cake now, so tomorrow you apologize to Hope, properly!”

My face stayed calm, nothing showing on it at all.

So it turned out this bit of humbling himself was only to make me win his little protégée's favor.

The next day I took half a day off on purpose and booked a full detail on the car.

I had them pull out the entire set of seats and clean the whole thing from top to bottom.

Looking at the car, good as new, I suddenly felt all of it was pointless.

Dirty was dirty.

So I might as well just get rid of it.

The used-car dealer saw right through how badly I wanted it gone, and pushed the price down brutally.

I didn't haggle. I just took it.

Once that was done, I hurried straight back to the office to finish the handover paperwork.

I'd barely stepped out the front doors when Samuel blocked my way.

I thought he'd ask about the transfer, but the moment he opened his mouth, every word was about Hope.

“Where's your car?”

I lowered my eyes and answered flatly, “In for servicing.”

His face darkened at once, his tone accusing. “Why didn't you say something ahead of time? Hope's waiting for me to drive her home. This throws everything off!”

“Samuel, we've already broken up.”

“Broken up? Renee, you were the one who threw yourself at me back then. Eight years together, we've done it every way there is, and now you want to break up with me? Who else is going to want you?”

I stared at him, unable to believe it.

I never knew the warm, sunny man he used to be could say something so vicious.

Seeing me frozen there without a word, maybe he realized what he'd just said had gone too far.

A flicker of panic crossed his face, and his tone softened a little.

“Renee, I'm not yelling at you. I promised Hope ahead of time I'd drive her, and it's really a hassle to suddenly have no car. Don't take it to heart. I'll drop her off tonight and come back early to be with you.”

He was always like this. Hope's business always came first.

It didn't matter anymore. I wasn't going to hold on to even a shred of hope where he was concerned.

I was leaving this city, and there was still a lot to pack anyway.

Looking at the gifts lined up neatly against the wall, the ones I'd prepared with my own hands for him to give his parents, I went blank.

The lock turned. Samuel really had come back earlier than usual.

Seeing me still cold, he took it that I was sulking at him, and instead let out a long breath of relief.

A flicker of smugness crossed his face as he calmly opened up his game.

He was certain I'd always give in for him, just like before.

Too bad this time the story wouldn't go the way he wanted.

“Samuel, we need to talk.”
