Chapter 3

The screen flickered to life, its cold blue luminescence cutting through the dim closet.

The custom operating system loaded within seconds. No photos, no personal apps, just an encrypted contacts list with exactly three numbers.

My fingers didn't hesitate. I tapped the first contact and pressed call.

The line rang once.

"Speak," a sharp, cautious voice answered on the second ring.

"Julian," I said.

Dead silence fell over the receiver. For three long seconds, there was only the sound of rapid, unsteady breathing.

"Chloe?" Julian’s voice cracked, shaking with disbelief. "Is that... is that really you? My God. Five years. Where have you been?"

"I don't have time for a reunion right now," I said, my voice completely level. "I need you to draft a divorce agreement."

"Divorce?" He paused, stunned. "You actually married someone? Who—"

"It doesn't matter," I cut in. "Listen carefully. I want an absolute, clean break. Full forfeiture of marital assets. No alimony, no division of his business, no claim to the house, and no custody claims. Zero contest."

"Are you out of your mind?" Julian’s tone spiked with immediate outrage. "Walk away with nothing? Do you have any idea what you're worth? Who is this man? I can destroy him in court by noon tomorrow!"

"I don't want his money, Julian. I want out." I glanced toward the bedroom door. "Draft it now. Bring it to my address within the hour."

I recited the suburban address and hung up before he could argue further.

I powered down the phone, walked out of the closet, and went downstairs.

The dining room still smelled of coffee and spilled milk. The white puddle had dried around the table legs, leaving a sticky, chalky stain on the dark hardwood.

For five years, I would have dropped to my knees with a washcloth to scrub it clean before Liam walked back through the door.

Now, I stepped over it without a second glance.

I sat on the living room sofa and opened my personal phone. An alert flashed on the screen—a push notification from Liam’s social media account.

He rarely posted anything personal. His feed was normally reserved for corporate milestones and networking events.

I tapped the screen.

The post had gone up twenty minutes ago.

It was a photo carousel taken under the bright morning sun at an amusement park an hour south of the city.

The first picture was Noah, perched high on Liam’s shoulders. He held a giant blue cotton candy, his head thrown back in pure, unrestrained laughter.

The second picture struck like a dull blow to the ribs.

Sarah stood beside Liam, holding a waffle cone with two scoops of gelato. She wore a wide-brimmed sun hat, a faint smear of cream at the corner of her lip, looking up at Liam with delicate, adoring eyes. Liam’s arm was draped casually around her shoulders, his face relaxed in a genuine, carefree grin I hadn't seen directed at me in years.

The caption read:

*Spontaneous family days heal everything. Nothing matters more than keeping these smiles bright.*

A bitter laugh escaped my throat.

Noah was supposed to be at school. But Liam hadn't taken him to school at all.

More importantly, today was Thursday.

At ten-thirty this morning, Noah had a scheduled appointment with a pediatric dental specialist—an appointment I had booked six months in advance because his frequent steroid inhalers were eroding the enamel on his molars. Liam had received the calendar invite three separate times.

Neither of them had remembered.

Noah hadn't cared. Liam hadn't bothered.

To them, my meticulous planning, the endless medical binders, and the strict diets were just naggy inconveniences easily replaced by sugar and roller coasters.

I locked the screen. The glass went black, reflecting my own calm, unblinking eyes.

The last microscopic ember of warmth in my chest blew out completely. There was no sadness left. Only a profound, liberating emptiness.

Forty minutes later, the front doorbell chimed.

I walked to the foyer and pulled the heavy oak door open.

Julian stood on the porch, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal three-piece suit. His silver-rimmed glasses caught the morning light, his sharp eyes scanning the neat, modest suburban front yard before landing on me.

He stared at my faded linen sweater and simple leggings, his jaw tightening.

"You lived here?" Julian asked, his voice thick with dismay. "In this tiny box? Playing housewife?"

"Come in, Julian," I said, stepping aside.

He followed me into the kitchen, his polished Oxfords clicking against the wood floor. He noticed the dried milk under the dining table and frowned, but kept his thoughts to himself.

Unzipping a sleek leather briefcase, Julian pulled out a thick document and laid it on the kitchen island.

"Everything you asked for is in here," Julian said quietly, handing me a heavy fountain pen. "Full waiver of marital property. You surrender all rights to his logistics company, the residence, and joint savings. Sole physical and legal custody remains with the father."

Julian placed a hand on the edge of the island, leaning forward.

"Chloe, let me call our legal team. We could take everything he owns. He wouldn't even know what hit him."

"That would prolong things," I said, flipping directly to the final page. "A lawsuit takes months. Years, if he fights. I won't give him another day of my life."

I uncapped the pen.

On the line marked *Spouse / Mother*, I didn't write Maya.

I signed my real name in sharp, elegant strokes that had once commanded nine-figure design contracts.

*Chloe.*

The ink dried instantly against the crisp paper.

I looked down at my left hand. The modest half-carat diamond band Liam had given me on our wedding day felt suddenly foreign, like a scrap of rusted metal.

I twisted the ring over my knuckle and pulled it off.

I set the ring squarely on top of the signature line, weighing down the legal pages.

"Keep a copy for my records," I told Julian. "Leave his copies right here on the island."

"Understood," Julian murmured, his demeanor shifting back to the ruthless professional I had known years ago. "And your things?"

"I don't have things here."

I walked upstairs to the master bedroom.

I didn't touch the expensive winter coats Liam had bought me to play hostess at his firm’s annual galas. I didn't touch the handbag collection in the closet or the diamond earrings in the vanity drawer. Everything bought with his money belonged to this house.

From the bottom of the closet, I grabbed an old, scuffed black weekend bag.

Inside, I packed two pairs of jeans, three plain t-shirts, my original sketchbooks, and my personal identification documents.

Zipping the bag shut, I hoisted the strap over my shoulder and walked back down the stairs.

Julian was waiting by the front door, the extra copy of the divorce agreement tucked under his arm.

"Let's go," I said.

I didn't turn around. I didn't look at the family portraits lining the hallway or the kitchen where I had spent hundreds of hours cooking meals for people who despised me.

I walked out the front door, leaving it completely unlocked behind me.

The crisp autumn breeze hit my face, clean and sharp.

At the end of the paved driveway, parked quietly against the curb, sat an extended-wheelbase black Rolls-Royce Phantom. The dark tinted windows reflected the golden morning sunlight.

As I approached, the rear passenger window glided down with a whisper of hydraulics.

Inside sat a man with sharp, aristocratic features and piercing, slate-gray eyes. His dark hair was brushed back with effortless precision, and his tailored Italian suit screamed generational power.

Ethan.

He looked at my faded sweater, noted the battered duffel on my shoulder, and then met my gaze.

A slow, knowing smile touched the corner of his lips.

"Welcome back, Chloe," Ethan said, his deep voice carrying an effortless authority.

Julian stepped forward, pulling the heavy car door open and bowing his head slightly.

"Did Julian call you?" I asked, looking at Ethan through the open door.

"He didn't have to," Ethan replied smoothly, his eyes never leaving mine. "I've had a car waiting within ten miles of this neighborhood every single day for five years."

He extended a hand toward me.

"Ready to go home?"

I didn't hesitate. I stepped into the leather-scented warmth of the cabin, the heavy door shutting out the suburban silence with an airtight thud.
