Chapter 1

For three agonizing years, my mother-in-law drenched my meals in foul fertility herbs, smirking that an empty womb made me useless. My husband, Carter, always kissed my forehead and whispered, “Ignore her, darling, love is enough.” But on our third anniversary, standing outside the VIP obstetrics suite, I caught him on his knees, kissing his former secretary’s swollen belly. “The baby needs a respectable name,” he told me without a trace of guilt. “Audrey will bear the Sterling heir, and you will raise it as your own.” I didn't scream. I took off my wedding ring, dropped it in his champagne, and pulled up my private offshore portfolio. Carter thought he was discarding a broken housewife. He had forgotten that every single dollar in his bank account, and the very chair he sat on, belonged to me.

The thermal container felt heavy in my hands, radiating a steady, comforting heat through the stainless steel. Inside was the beef bone broth I had spent five hours simmering at dawn, carefully skimming the fat until the broth was golden and clear. Carter had skipped breakfast again, claiming he had an urgent surgery scheduled before back-to-back executive meetings at the hospital.

I checked the time on my phone. Eleven forty-five.

Today marked three full years since Carter and I stood at the altar. Three years of enduring cold glances, polite dismissals, and the constant, suffocating pressure from his mother.

Only four hours ago, Eleanor had pushed her untouched teacup across the marble island, looking at me with pure disgust.

"Three years, Evelyn," she had said, her voice sharp enough to draw blood. "Even a stray hen lays an egg eventually. A woman who can't carry an heir has no business sitting at our table. If you had any shame, you'd pack your bags and stop wasting my son's youth."

I hadn't argued. I had simply lowered my head, washed the breakfast dishes, and kept my quiet dignity intact.

Because inside my handbag, tucked inside a crisp white envelope, was the latest comprehensive medical report from the reproductive clinic. The hormonal imbalance that had plagued me since college was completely resolved. The uterine lining had restored itself to optimal health.

The doctor’s words were still ringing in my ears: *You’re completely healthy, Mrs. Sterling. There’s no physical reason you can’t conceive right now.*

I took a deep breath, clutching the envelope tightly against my ribs. I wanted to see Carter’s face when I handed it to him. I wanted to see the relief in his dark eyes, the moment he realized we could finally have the baby he always claimed he wanted.

I stepped out of the elevator on the eighth floor of the private wing.

This floor was reserved exclusively for high-profile VIPs, secluded from the noisy bustle of the main medical center. Plush gray runners lined the quiet corridor, muffling my footsteps as I walked toward the private suites at the far end.

The scent of fresh white lilies hung in the filtered air. I expected to find Carter in his consultation office, drowning in case files and administrative charts.

Instead, the door to the premier recovery suite stood half open.

I paused, raising a hand to knock, but the sight through the gap froze me in place.

Carter was inside.

He was not wearing his white lab coat or his formal charcoal suit jacket. He had stripped down to his white dress shirt, his sleeves rolled carelessly to his elbows. He was down on one knee on the plush carpet beside a velvet chaise lounge.

Sitting on the chaise was Audrey Blake.

Audrey was a celebrated society painter, a woman whose name regularly graced the art galleries and charity galas Carter attended. She was dressed in an empire-waist cream cashmere dress, her delicate frame accentuating the distinct, unmistakable swell of her stomach.

She was visibly pregnant—at least five or six months along.

Carter’s broad hands rested gently over the curve of her belly. His head was tilted sideways, his ear pressed tenderly against the fabric of her dress, listening with rapt attention.

On his face was an expression I had never seen in three years of marriage.

His features were completely relaxed, softened by a radiant, worshipful warmth. There was no trace of the cold, detached businessman who shared my bed. His eyes gleamed with raw joy, bright and utterly unguarded.

"Did you feel that?" Carter whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "He kicked again."

Audrey smiled down at him, threading her manicured fingers through his dark hair. Her touch was intimate and practiced, speaking of a routine that had lasted for months.

"He's as restless as his father," Audrey said softly, her lips curving into a smug, delicate smile. "He knows when you're near."

Carter let out a low, breathy laugh, pressing a gentle kiss directly onto the swell of her abdomen. "He knows his father will give him the world."

The air turned thin. My chest tightened until every breath felt like dragging broken glass into my lungs.

I stood rooted to the carpet outside the doorway, unable to move, unable to speak, my fingers clutching the thermal container until my knuckles turned white.

Before my mind could even process the horror of what I was seeing, the door to the adjoining private pantry opened.

Eleanor walked into the room, holding a steaming porcelain bowl in both hands. Her face, which had been twisted with bitterness toward me just hours ago, was radiant with an ecstatic smile.

"Careful, darling," Eleanor cooed, walking over to Audrey with absolute maternal devotion. "I had the chef prepare this fortified chicken consommé with saffron. You're eating for two now. My grandbaby needs every single drop of nourishment."

"Thank you, Mother," Audrey said sweetly, tilting her head back to receive the spoon Eleanor blew on with endless patience. "Carter has been spoiling me all morning. He wouldn't even let me walk across the room."

"And he shouldn't!" Eleanor declared, beaming down at them. "You're carrying the future of our family. You deserve to be treated like royalty."

The three of them sat together in the warm, golden light of the luxury suite—a husband, a doting mother-in-law, and an expectant mother. A perfect, complete family.

And I was standing in the shadows outside, holding a lunch I had woken up at five in the morning to cook.

Carter stood up from the floor, adjusting his collar before leaning down to press a lingering kiss against Audrey's forehead.

"Don't worry about any of the legal arrangements," Carter said, his voice ringing through the quiet room with cold, steady conviction. "Just focus on resting and staying healthy. As long as you bring this boy safely into the world, every single asset in the family estate will belong to him."

Audrey lowered her eyelashes, resting her hand over his. "What about Evelyn? Won't she cause trouble if she finds out?"

Eleanor scoffed loudly, waving her hand with pure disgust. "Who cares about that useless woman? She couldn't produce an heir in three years. She's lucky we haven't thrown her out onto the street already."

Carter’s expression hardened, his tone turning utterly ruthless.

"Evelyn doesn't have a say," Carter said dismissively. "That barren woman isn't fit to be a mother anyway. Once the baby is born, I'll hand her the divorce papers and a check. She will leave, and you will take your rightful place as my wife."

Every single word struck my chest like a physical hammer.

Three years.

Three years of drinking bitter herbal medicines until my stomach bled. Three years of enduring Eleanor’s daily humiliations, swallowing every insult, cooking his meals, ironing his shirts, and waiting up until midnight just to hear him say he was too tired to talk.

He hadn't been working late. He hadn't been overwhelmed by the hospital board.

He had been building a secret life, planting his child in another woman's womb, and waiting for the right moment to discard me like trash.

A sudden tremor seized my limbs. The strength drained out of my body all at once.

My numb fingers lost their grip.

*Clang!*

The stainless steel container crashed onto the hard marble floor just past the doorway.

The lid popped open upon impact, splashing piping hot broth across the polished tiles. Beside it, the white envelope slipped from my trembling grasp, the glossy pages of my fertility report spilling open across the wet floor, bearing my name and the doctor's clear, bold seal in bright blue ink.

The deafening crash echoed down the silent VIP wing.

Inside the room, Eleanor let out a startled shriek, dropping her porcelain spoon.

Audrey gasped, shrinking back against the cushions and grabbing Carter’s arm in fear.

Carter turned sharply toward the door.

His eyes locked onto me, standing frozen among the steaming broth and scattered papers.

For a fraction of a second, the room fell into absolute silence.

I searched his face, desperate to find even a flicker of shame, a sliver of regret, or the slightest hesitation of a man caught in an unforgivable betrayal.

There was none.

Carter’s eyebrows drew together into a hard, irritated line. His jaw clenched tight, his dark eyes darkening with pure annoyance and cold, icy displeasure at having his perfect family moment interrupted.

"Evelyn," he said, his voice flat, devoid of any warmth. "What the hell are you doing here?"
