Chapter 1

“Mrs. Durant, your hearing is completely back.”

The doctor’s words landed like a gentle thunder, and he gave me a reassuring smile after reviewing my last test results.

I blinked at him, hardly able to believe it. “Completely? You mean… I can actually hear everything again?”

He chuckled, warm and easy, as if sharing in my relief. “Yes. Every sound, every voice—you’ll experience it just like before.”

My fingers trembled as I pressed them together. “Thank you, doctor. You don’t know how much this means to me.”

He rested a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Go home and share this joy with your family. You’ve waited long enough for a moment like this.”

The drive back was a blur of excitement. I couldn’t stop shifting in my seat, my heart racing like a wild drumbeat. My palms were slick against the fabric of my skirt. Finally, I could hear him—Victor, my husband—his voice, my world again.

“He’s going to be so happy… He’ll grab me in his arms, tell me he’s missed my voice. He’ll…”

But as I reached the front door, my newfound hearing betrayed me to a sound I wasn’t prepared for—muffled voices, sharp and precise through the walls. I froze, fingers tightening around the doorknob.

Then I heard him. Victor.

“I don’t care what anyone thinks, Mason. Bianca is the one I love. She’s the only one who ever had my heart.”

My blood turned to ice. Bianca… my sister.

“You’re insane,” muttered Mason, his voice low, almost a hiss. “She didn’t choose you, remember?”

Victor’s laugh carried a smug, casual note. “Maybe not then, but now we’re back. Bianca finally sees my worth. I’m planning to hand her the Durant Crown Holdings.”

Mason’s voice rose, disbelief cutting through the tension. “You’re seriously going to give her the Durant Crown Holdings? Billions of dollars, Victor! And what about your wife? What about Isabelle? She helped build all this! She even got that billionaire investor who can only communicate in sign language!”

Victor shrugged, unbothered. “I know… but she’s not like Bianca. Isabelle is obedient, she said she’d stay with me even if I lost everything. She doesn’t need diamonds, she doesn’t need a company—she has me. Isn’t that enough?”

Mason’s jaw tightened. “Enough for you maybe… but what about her? She’s the eldest of the Sterling family. Do you think she deserves to live small just because she loves you?”

Victor’s voice dropped to a cold, steady calm. “Isabelle loves me more than she loves herself. She’ll endure. She’ll smile through suffering. That’s who she is.”

My chest ached, a heavy, sharp pain that left me rooted to the spot. Each word cut deeper than the last, until my knees threatened to buckle, and I gripped the doorframe just to remain standing. The betrayal was brutal—cold and unrelenting.

Mason pressed his hand to his forehead, letting out a long, exasperated sigh. “Victor, this is madness. If she ever finds out that you married her just to get closer to Bianca… she’ll be shattered!”

My heart stopped. Three years. Three whole years of marriage—and every single promise, every moment of trust, had been a lie I hadn’t even seen coming. My fingers dug into the doorframe until my knuckles went white.

Then Mason’s gaze landed on me. His face drained of color. “R-Isabelle… you’re home?”

Victor’s head snapped toward me. For a brief heartbeat, guilt flickered in his eyes—but vanished almost immediately. His lips curved into that familiar, calm smile, the one I had once trusted completely.

“Relax, Mason,” he said smoothly, the ease in his voice designed to fool anyone. “She can’t hear you. You could scream her name, and she’d still be lost in her own silence. Pathetic, isn’t it?”

The words made me flinch. My ears burned, even though he had no idea that I could hear every syllable.

Mason forced a nervous laugh and quickly stepped aside, muttering something polite as if nothing had happened.

Victor rose and picked up his jacket from the chair, draping it over my shoulders with a hand that once felt familiar but now seemed utterly foreign.

“My love,” he cooed, that same soft, honeyed tone I had adored, “why did you step outside dressed like this? The winter air will make you sick.”

For years, I had believed in that voice. I had treasured it, loved it, trusted it. He had learned sign language for me, staying up countless nights with a tutor just so we could communicate freely, no barriers. I had thought it was love. I had thought it was devotion.

Now, standing in that doorway, I finally understood. It had never been real. Every tender word, every smile, every careful gesture—it had all been a performance, a mask to keep me blind to the truth.
